[Some countdown sound clip that ends with an announcer saying "Welcome!"] ...to a brand new season of Winx Club.
Yep, it's finally here. A new season of Winx, and we've got the scoop on the premiere. Plus, news from the Winx world, and a special surprise. All this, on WinxTalk Podcast #5, with your host SpiderBraids.
After a half year hiatus, Winx Club is back for a brand new season. And here's the scoop on the first episode of the new season, "The Princess' Ball".
So, Stella has been invited to her princess ball, and she runs into a bunch of fairies from a rival school. Now, where I live, Alfea is the only college for fairies around, so what's with the rival school business? Anyways, this week, the plot with the fairies revolves around rival school fairy Chimera being so hellbent on buying a gorgeous dress, she'll do anything, and I do mean everything, to stop Stella from getting her hands on it. And vice versa, too. The plot promises to heat up, though, as quite a few are speculating that the surprise that her dad's planning to spring on Stella isn't exactly what she's expecing (that he's getting back together with mom).
In other news, the Trix have decided to tag-team once again, this time with fellow "jailbird" Baltor; the new villain team-up is causing trouble back at Layla's home realm... and Musa has gotten her hair spelled to be longer. Honestly, what were you thinking, Musa? Didn't you even say...
[sound clip of 2x01: "I am not changing my pigtails"]
Methinks she should have kept her word, no? But whatev. Here are some opinions:
Lori says, "Wow. Total wow. Of the three seasons, this was easily the best opener. I loved just about every minute." Lori cites, as strong points, the new season taking place during the summer, Tecna's new voice, Chimera and her Beta cohorts, Stella and Bloom trying on dresses virtually, and our new villain Baltor, his team up with the Trix, and his takeover of Layla's home realm. However, she also cites a few weak points, the biggest ones being Musa's longer hair and the editing of the intro to incorporate this, and everyone agreeing with Stella's conclusion that her parents must be getting back together. It may be a good guess, but remember what Tecna thinks of good guesses?
[2x18: Tecna, of her guess: "A ridiculously illogical leap in reason"]
I guess on her planet, the term "good guess" is an oxymoron.
Meanwhile, Freedom Fighter says, "Wow, wow, WOW! Thank you, writers, for taking only one episode to make me completely forget about last year's dismal debacle! I love Winx Club again!"
There are many things that FF likes in common with Lori. For example, FF enjoys the new Tecna voice, and adds "I think the only measuring stick most of us will care about is when we get a long Tecna-Timmy scene."
FF likes the new fairies, saying "the Betas didn't irk me at all, so maybe a spicing up of the show with fairies vs. fairies will be a good idea."
FF also likes the new villain, saying "As for new 'lead' (and I use that term loosely) villain Baltor, no cheesy bad guy lines, decent powers, and hoping to piggyback on the only really good thing from Season 2 - that would be Layla, what with his plans to attack her realm - he's got promise. More than I can ever say for Darkar."
As for things that FF doesn't like, there's the issue of Musa's new 'do. However, FF does quantify the new look thusly: "I really don't want to say it negates how much more I came to like her over the course of last season... and so I won't. Not yet, anyway. As long as she does something, maybe I won't have to think about the hair."
In a rather minor issue, FF also points out one plot illogicity: "Okay, whomever's idea it was to chuck the Trix into an icy planet when one of them has powers based on that element... yeah, you're an idiot."
As for me, personally, I disapprove of the intro pulling an Iola Boylan on us, by making it look as if Musa's always worn her hair that way. Really. There are scenes that have already been in last season's intro, only this time, Musa's hair is LONG! I think this is a bit crazy, don't you think so?
Also, I don't know why, but do we REALLY need to be reminded of the Boxing Day Tsunami? I live in one of the countries that was affected by the wave, so it creeps me out a bit.
Judging from the thread at Toon Zone, quite a few fans missed the premiere due to the early start time. And that includes one person who was planning to break in his new DVD recorder with this premiere. We're talking a person who has the ability to TIMESHIFT his favorite shows, and still missed it because he was thinking there was no way that Winx would take the 7:00am slot. Draven, did you not notice a single promo mentioning the early start time?
So here's a reminder so you don't miss it again: Winx Club is now the first show on the 4KidsTV block. Check your local listings, and set your timer accordingly.
[News theme]
And now, news from the Winx world.
WinxClub.com has put up pictures of two more Enchantix forms online: those of Layla and Stella. Also, it has put up a series of preview screengrabs, and it looks like we're in for another good season.
Coinciding with the new episodes of Winx Club and the premiere of Chaotic, 4Kids.TV has changed its schedule. The schedule now looks like this: Winx Club at 8:00am, followed by Bratz at 8:30, followed by Kirby at 9:00, Viva Pinata at 9:30, followed by Yugioh at 10:00, then Chaotic at 10:30, TMNT Fast Forward at 11:00, and GI Joe at 11:30. Except for Kirby, all shows have new episodes, and all times are Eastern.
As always, check your local listings. Please note that the CW affiliates that air the 4Kids block air it on Sundays instead of Saturdays.
In other scheduling news, 4KidsTV will re-air the first two episodes of Winx's 3rd season on October 14th and 21st, before resuming with the 3rd episode of the season on the 28th.
And that's news from the Winx world.
[News end]
And now, a special surprise for you. Remember that pretty cute song from the opener while Stella and Bloom were trying on dresses? You'd probably just LOVE to hear the sequence all over again. Here you go...
[Sound clip: Stella and Bloom try on dresses to the song "Super Fantastic". Which I totally swear I did not nick from Michael's site.]
I don't know why, but it reminds me too much of the Bratz theme song. Heck, since Bratz is also a 4Kids program, it might even be the same singers, but what the heck. It's a cute song. And hey, at least it's not that "Hero" song from last season's opener...
[Five second or so clip from the start of "Hero", also definitely not nicked from Mike's site.]
Blech. Boy songs do not belong on a show this girl-oriented.
Well, that's it for this edition. Starting with this edition, podcasts will be released every other Wednesday. You can leave feedback at my blog at spiderbraids.livejournal.com . Thanks for listening, and we'll see you in two weeks.
Other stuff
I totally did not nick my clips from Michael's site. I would never do that. I actually torrented the S3 premiere (yes, it's on a torrent already), and made the appropriate clipping. (Same deal with the S2 premiere.)
Yeah, I torrented these eps. Go ahead, mock me.
It was also through my torrenting that I found that the new rival fairy is pronounced KIM-mer-a, rather than kye-MARE-a. Hmm...
Also, this podcast needed a little post-upload editing (AGAIN!), so I took the opportunity to add the news of the re-airings.
