The Tudyk Trilogy Redux: Big Hero 6 (Part 4)

(2022 update: While I was posting this review originally, one particular crew member for Big Hero 6 died, so this is how I started the next part of the review:)
Well, how do you like that? I briefly mentioned in the last part that Disney named one of the minor characters in the film after one of its crew... and look what just happened :-\ (And according to the linked article, he even voiced the character in question. Interesting...)

So anyways, the gang are walking past a rather palatial mansion, when much to the others' surprise, Fred walks over to its front door: "Welcome to mi casa! That's French for front door :-)" Honey: "It's... really not :-/" Gogo thinks he must be kidding, until a servant comes out to greet Master Frederick :-D Fred fistbumps the servant before entering, while the others are too cold (or stunned?) to bother... but the cold never bothered Baymax anyway: "Badala-dala" :-D

Gogo (along with the others) is surprised that the laid-back school mascot lives in a freaking mansion: "I thought you lived under a bridge" :-) Fred reveals that the mansion belongs to his parents, who are currently vacationing on the family island, as the gang walks past a family portrait, which includes some old grey-haired dude with sunglasses. Now who do you think of when you think Marvel movies and an old grey-haired dude with sunglasses? ;-)

Fred brings the gang to his room, which is filled with a bunch of comic book paraphanilia, giving the animators the opportunity to hide loads of Marvel Easter eggs :-) Wasabi notes a ridiculous looking portrait of Fred as a buff man riding a tiger (!) : "If I wasn't just attacked by a man in a kabuki mask, I think this would be the weirdest thing I've seen today" :-D

Fred's also got a bunch of arcade cabinets, and you'd think that the animators would try to sneak in a Ralph reference in there...

And you'd be right... Look at the screen next to Gogo :-)
(Disney Screencaps)

While Hiro is busy sketching the logo he saw on a sheet of Fred(erick)'s personalized paper, Baymax walks over to him and reminds him his body temperature is still low... before leaning on top of him and glowing. Olaf may like warm hugs, but Baymax can literally give them :-) The rest of the gang decides to lean against Baymax, and Fred describes it as "like spooning a warm marshmallow" :-)

Hiro shows the others his bird logo drawing and asks them what it means, and Fred answers that it's a bird :-D That's not exactly what Hiro's looking for :-/ so Bay explains that "Apprehending the man in the mask will improve Hiro's emotional state." Fred has a theory on kabuki man's identity, and gives his friends a bunch of comic books and describes their millionaire businessmen villains, before turning on the TV to show a picture of Al, with a ticker on screen that says he's going to open a new multibillion dollar building soon (this will be important :-)) He believes him to be behind this whole mess, just because a) he's familiar with villainous industrialists through comics, b) Hiro turned down Al's offer to sell him his microbots, and c) the only other person with the slightest possibility was the late Bob, so...

Still, they're skeptical about such a high profile guy like Al being involved, and Hiro concedes they don't know anything about kabuki man... and on cue, Bay points out that the masked man is of AB- blood type :-) Bay explains he's programmed to scan anyone's health needs, and Hiro realizes he can use that detailed info... Except that Gogo points out that he'd have to scan everyone in San Fransokyo and "that might take, I dunno, forever?"

So Hiro reckons he needs to look for a new angle (there's that phrase again :-)), and looking at one of Fred's figurines, decides he'll have to upgrade Bay's scanner... then he takes a look at some more of Fred's superhero figurines and the picture refocuses to show his labmates in the reflection on the display case. Hiro decides that he's going to upgrade all of them because (in Bay's words) those who have suffered a loss require support from friends and loved ones :-) Fred: "I like where this is heading :-)"

Wasabi is skeptical that they can go after kabuki man because "We're nerds!" Honey: "Hiro, we want to help, but we're just... us." Hiro reassures everyone "You can be way more." Gogo decides they're in, and Fred says what we're all thinking... "Our origin story begins! WE’RE GONNA BE SUPERHEROES!" :-)

We're at Hiro's garage, where after some scanning and quick exposition by Hiro that the transmitter is inside the kabuki mask, and so they should focus on getting it, we head into a montage of Hiro gearing everyone up, set to a rocking tune by Fall Out Boy called Immortals :-) Let's go over what they've got...

First up, Honey's got herself a pink outfit and a purse. No, she hasn't gone girly (-er) on us, as this purse can produce chem balls with various capabilities. To test them (and everyone else's new skills), Fred is using his servant as a target (even having him wear a kabuki mask :-D) Thing is, servant guy here is standing still, so it's nowhere near a very good indication of how they might do in an actual fight... But anyways, Honey tosses a ball at servant guy's legs to affix him in place in order to take the mask... Servant guy is nonplussed by it all, including Honey hugging him :-D

Gogo gets a yellow outfit with some of her "rejected" bike wheels magnetically attached to her arms and legs. The leg wheels allow her to skate around really fast, while the arm wheels can be tossed as weapons... Gogo uses her leg wheels to quickly wrap a hose around nonplussed servant guy (buttering a croissant! :-D) before taking the mask :-)

Next up is Bay, who's getting himself some red armor (I'd like to think Hiro wants it to match the charging unit :-)) We'll get back to him later, but this part of the montage includes some clips originally used in the teaser trailer, albeit with a different background...

Fred gets a light blue kaiju outfit with two special features: the ability to make really high jumps, and breathe fire. Ooh, Freddy like :-) And servant guy is still nonplussed :-D

Lastly, Wasabi gets a green outfit with some laser plasma blades mounted on his arms, and his test involves slicing up loads of tennis balls being fired at him, plus the machine that's shooting them :-) leading to Wasabi awkwardly having to turn off his blades before high fiving Hiro :-D

Now that the montage is over, we see the gang in their new outfits chilling out briefly, with Wasabi complaining about his outfit riding up on him :-D Hiro appears in a dark blue outfit to introduce Baymax 2.0: the health bot now decked out in bright red armor, as if to riff on Iron Man :-) He looks glorious (Fred's words!)... until he says "Hello" and starts walking after a butterfly :-D Hiro tells Baymax to do the fist thing... and he makes the post fistbump gesture, replete with that "Badala-dala" sound :-D He clarifies it to be the other fist thing, and Bay reveals his new rocket-powered fist and smashes a statue with it (and on closer inspection , it's a statue of Hans from Frozen :-D) and it makes Freddy happy :-) Hiro then shows off Bay's other big upgrade: wings and thruster boots, plus magnets on the back for Hiro to attach himself to, using his boots and big gloves :-) "I fail to see how flying makes me a better healthcare companion" "I fail to see how you fail to see that it's AWESOME! :-D"

But Bay probably doesn't fail to see that it's dangerous, as they hilariously struggle to get their flight under control :-D After a bit of flying around, they eventually land themselves on the top of one of the "Golden Gate" support towers. Baymax analyzes Hiro's emotional state and concludes that "The treatment is working." And Bay decides to administer some more, dropping like a rock off the tower before switching on his boosters :-D

So, we're getting ourselves a 3D friendly sequence of the main protagonist flying around with his newly-airborne companion... huh, wait a minute...

HTTYD-BH6-Parallel
(Disney Screencaps)

So yeah, between this and the casting of TJ Miller (plus the lack of opening), you'd think Disney was chasing the HTTYD crowd with this film... The funny thing is, this movie ended up grossing more money than the actual Dragon sequel, something most people would not have expected early in summer 2014, when many were pegging that sequel as one of the biggest hits of that summer :-)

The dynamic duo fly around town, through various thoroughfares, including a railroad tunnel (!) Bay flies near a building with reflective windows, so that we see Hiro looking at his and Bay's reflection. Just like when Tadashi rescued him from the bot fight, get it? :-)

Sequence climaxes with Bay flying around a bunch of (get this) fish-like jet engine thingies floating above town. HUH. We see the two sitting atop one of those big floaty thingies, with Bay seeing Hiro shaking his feet and deciding to mimic him :-) The imagery of the two looking at the clouds is simply beautiful :-) (And foreshadowing for later perhaps?)

Hiro's left looking for words on how to describe the experience... Bay of all people suggests "Sick... Just an expression" :-) Hiro: "I am never taking the bus again :-)"

(2022 update: A year or so after this recap, I actually saw one of our local over-the-air channels using the musical score for Hiro and Baymax's flight as part of a promo for upcoming programs :-))

Bay points out that Hiro's emotional state is improving, and gives him the option of deactivating him... but of course he doesn't want that just yet :-) because they still have a kabuki guy to catch...

Which leads us back to actual plot, as Hiro decides to have Baymax scan the whole city from this really high vantage point to find a match for his medical data using his newly built scanner helmet... That almost seems a bit Big Brother to me (and I don't mean Tadashi ;-)) We find out that Hiro's improvements have increased his range by 1000% (which should still be nowhere near enough to scan all of SF in one go :-/ but there you go), and they find their guy on an island...

Cut to Baymax carrying everyone to FauxAlcatraz... The girls get to ride the wings aside Hiro (Gogo: "Killer view :-)"), while the other guys have to hang for dear life from his arms... Wasabi: "If I wasn't terrified of heights, I'd probably love this, but I'm terrified of heights, so I don't love it" :-D Meanwhile, Fred is striking some poses :-D

The gang lands (with Fred jumping off Bay's arms really early: "Isn't that awesome? Our first landing together as a team!") Wasabi notices a sign saying "quarantine", and Baymax goes into Nonny mode to explain what it means: "Enforced isolation to prevent contamination that could lead to disease, or in some cases death" Wasabi adds: "This one has a skull face on it, a skull face!" :-D

Hiro tells everybody to be alert for kabuki guy, and literally at the first sound they hear they start firing off their gear :-D And as CinemaSins docks two sins for, they somehow manage not to hit each other or the thing that actually made the sound... Fred: "That... was a bird." Honey: "Well, at least we know our gear works :-)"

Wasabi tries cutting a hole in the wall, but (just as with most other tech ;-)) his portable plasma cutters are apparently nowhere near as precise as his lab version, as his circle becomes more of an inward spiral, and he has to backtrack and make an extra slash to finish the "circle" :-D

While they're strolling around, Fred filks up some random song calling themselves Fred's Angels :-D and Wasabi gets annoyed, threatening to laser hand Fred in the face :-D

Back to actual plot. Much to Hiro's dismay, Bay's sensors aren't working very well in the fort, but Honey finds a room and calls the gang over... Room has the remains of a really big and apparently failed science experiment, plus a control room with a bunch of monitors... How convenient :-)

On the monitors, they pull up a video revealing that the aforementioned experiment was a teleportation portal project for the government known as Silent Sparrow, ergo, the bird logo, being pitched by Al. Fred reacts to footage of the crew using a hat for an initial test: "Ooh, magic hat :-)"

However, their use of a living subject, a girl named Abigail, was not so lucky... She gets in her pod, and as they're getting ready to send it in, a crew member notices irregularities in the containment field, and Al deems them within acceptable parameters. One portal exploding and the other sucking in a bunch of debris proves him otherwise, and the government crew decides to permanently shut down the test facility...

The gang suspects that Al's using the microbots to pick up steal back his invention, but as they're pondering this potential motive, here comes kabuki man to pelt them with a piece of wall... (Bay: "Oh no...") One again, Bay's size stops the shot, and the gang decides to go into action (OOH!)

Bay holds up a piece of wall, and gets taken out with a single microbot punch :-/ While Hiro's busy tending to him, the rest head into action, starting with Fred and his big jumps, which kabuki man counters with a single upward microbot column... "Falling hard" :-D

Wasabi thinks they need a plan, and Gogo simply responds "Get the mask" (shades of The Avengers? ;-)) While Wasabi is still like "For real, what is the plan?!" :-D the girls go into action... Gogo's killer skating (even using some of the debris from the experiment :-)) and frisbee throwing skills (using her arm wheels as weapons... told you those skills would be important :-)) allow her to last quite a while against kabuki guy, and she's pretty graceful while doing so... Well, what else would you expect from Mulan? ;-)

Meanwhile, Honey uses one of her chem balls to cushion her jump down from high up before sneaking around. However, she's not so lucky with her next ball, because she gets frisbeed in the face mid-toss after kabuki man ducks away from Gogo's throw, causing her ball to land in front of Gogo and make her skid right into Honey :-D

Next up is Wasabi, who manages to chop up a bunch of bots, before kabuki man gets the idea to grab him by his legs and toss him... managing to take out Fred again in the process :-D With all of the supporting crew gathered in one corner, kabuki man preps up a big microbot punch, but Hiro and Bay come flying in to bail them out...

Kabuki man punches a column up at the two, but Hiro's forward momentum is such that he ends up tackling kabuki man down a flight of stairs, knocking his mask aside in the process, so instead of getting microbot-punched, his teammates merely get rained on :-)

Hiro gets up: "It's over, Krei..." Kabuki man gets up...and is not Krei :-0 "Prof. Callaghan??? But... the explosion... you died... :-0" Bob reveals that he was protected by the microbots, as we're shown a flashback showing him using Hiro's neurotransmitter to cover himself with them...

As Bob is demanding his mask back, Hiro brings up his big brother rushing in to save him and Bob responds "That was his mistake" :-0

Baymax lands next to Hiro, and he's so angry at his brother's teacher for dismissing his gallant (if rather stupid and futile) attempt at rescue, he decides to turn this into the most intense Punch Teacher ever... There's just one problem: Bay's programming prevents him from harming another human being. Well, a little fiddling with his card port will fix that right up, as Hiro tosses Tadashi's card aside, and after thumping the card port back in, Bay's eyes turn red... Uh-oh...

In a bit of perversion from the norm, Bay's rampage is not being played up as awesome, but rather as the most distressing thing ever, especially with Henry "Wreck-It Ralph" Jackman's underscore (this scene is essentially the equivalent of that film's kart wreckage bit). Bob runs around in fear as Bay's searching for him, tossing his fellow teammates aside as they try to slow him down, much to Hiro's disgust... Eventually, Bob takes his mask back and uses the microbots to escape, while Honey finds Tadashi's card (insert tasteless joke about Latinas and green cards here) and stuffs it back into Baymax's slot...

While Bay is busy dusting off the rest of the guys, Hiro chews out Honey for not letting Baymax do the thing, to which Honey answers: "We didn't sign up for this!" Yeah, you certainly didn't sign up to be beaten up by one of your labmate's inventions or to beat up your teacher :-) On top of that, Hiro also finds out Baymax's Big Brother scanner was damaged in the fracas and so decides to pull an Eric Cartman and head home, ditching his so-called friends on FauxAlcatraz... He's definitely not taking it very well :-/

Coming up: Bringing it home :-)
