Episode 2: Welcome to Magix! / More than High School
I spotlight on the different pep talks used in both versions. For purposes of comparison, I'll just directly transcribe.
Unedited: (Griz) This school will be your home for the next five years. But this home can cease to be yours at any moment. The rules of this institution are based on discipline. Disregard these rules and I'll personally escort you to the front gate! This is not a magician's school. You're not here to learn hocus-pocus. Consequently, you may not use your powers in the hallways or other common areas. (counts to three on her fingers) In fact, the only place you may display your powers is in your classroom under your teacher's supervision. Is that clear Princess Stella? (Show lab damage) Thanks to you and your antics the potion laboratory will not be accessible until next month at the earliest. Now I think you know what not to do if you wish to stay... huh? (adjusts glasses) [B: You did that? S: So? My father paid for all the damages.]
(The other teachers make their grand entrance. Left to right, WizGiz, Palladium, FG, DuFour. FG: Sorry I'm late, I hope you'll excuse me.)
(FG and company meet the Griz) Ladies, here comes your headmistress. Attention!
(FG takes over from here) Oh really, there's no need to be so stodgy, I hope Ms. Griselda hasn't frightened you too much. Welcome to Alfea. The best fairy school in the whole of Magix. Mind you, it's also the only one. (walking up the stairs to the building) Come in ladies!
(Opens the door to the building) Here we are! And so we begin our orientation session, by the end of which we should all know each other better. Becoming a fairy is hard work, but I know that everyone here can do it. Keep in mind that the teachers and I are always here to help you. Okay, enough with the boring stuff, feel free to explore your surroundings. But be very careful. There are dangers lurking about. [S: "Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower." Listen, that's what's coming up.] (Indeed it does...) Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower. [The Griz: Alright, speeches are over, everyone's dismissed, you're free 'til dinnertime.] Good luck everybody, I'll see you tomorrow. Oh, and classes start at eight o'clock sharp, do be punctual.
Edited: (Griz) First things first, our code of behavior! The first rule is: you must follow all the rules in the code of behavior! (as she counts to three on her fingers) If you break the rules once, you will be turned into a frog. If you break the rules twice, your magic priveleges will be suspended, and if you break the rules three times, you will be expelled. Isn't that right, Ms. Stella? (Show lab damage) Last year she destroyed the potions laboratory with an unauthorized magic spell. This brings me to the 2nd rule. (Back to the Griz) No unsupervised magic at any time! (adjusts glasses, makes "clearing throat" sound) [B: You really did that? S: I was trying to create a new shade of pink!] We believe that discipline's the only way to prepare you for the world out there! Which brings me to the 3rd rule: Stay away from the witches of Cloud Tower no matter what! We don't have a punishment for that, since nothing we could do would be as terrible as what they'll do to you if they catch you there.
(After a commercial, we cut straight to FG opening the doors and entering the building with the students... she takes over from here) Welcome all! I'm Ms. Faragonda, your head-mistress. I'm an Alfea alumna and a former fairy godmother. This year we have quite a wonderful class. Some of you will fight evil, others will grant wishes and many are princesses that will take over your realms. Each of you is unique. You all have different sources of power and diverse origins. But our mission is the same: To help each of you become the very best you can be [Stella mocks this line and adds: "She really loves saying that"]. Naturally we expect you to do your best at all times. [Griz: Now ladies! It's time to check into your dormitories and meet your roommates!] Remember everyone! Let's make this a great year! Oh, and of course use every opportunity to connect to your Winx!
Okay, so which version do you prefer? I dunno, I'm partial to grand entrances myself.
And although not as spotlight-able, there's much less of a culture clash in the edited version.
Unedited:
Stella: Speaking of food... whattaya say we eat out tonight? It'll be our way of celebrating the new school year.
Flora: Great idea. That'll give us a chance to get to know one another.
Bloom: Anyone for pizza?
Musa: What's "pizza"?
Flora: Yeah, what is it?
Bloom: It's the national dish of Callisto, more or less. (cut to the Griz watching them leave Alfea, then fade to bus)
Edited:
S: I have a brilliant idea. Whattaya say we get out here and go downtown for a pizza?
F: Great idea. Downtown Magix is so much fun!
B: What is it like?
M: It's FRESH!
F: You've never been???
B: No, but if we can grab a slice, I'm so there! (fade straight to bus)
Same question as above. Personally, I dunno why all the fairies should know about Earth culture...
Responses:
tanz_fanatika: "Okay, enough with the boring stuff" sounds really out of character for Faragonda. I don't like that line. It makes her sound way too goofy.
I definitely prefer the 4Kids version. I like Griselda's line about no punishment being as bad as what the witches will do to any trespassers. I like FG mentioning the possible future career paths for fairies and the different power sources. Cuts are cuts and have to be done and that little entrance bit seemed like good cut fodder.
I'm not sure how to handle the magic realm's knowing about pizza. It depends how much contact they have with Earth. Based on Stella's randomly being there, as well as Professor DuFour, Katy, Karina and other background Alfea students, it seems trips to Earth are commonplace. Heh. One on hand, I would like them not knowing about it, but on the other, I can see where it's easier to have familiar food and not have to make up dishes. And again, we really don't know how much contact they actually have with Earth, so it could be that they do know of it. It doesn't really bug me either way.
(NB: TF is referencing how various background characters also appear in the background in scenes taking place on Earth)
beruche: "Okay, enough with the boring stuff," does seem goofy on Faragonda. More like a Winx girl's line.
Thank you so much, anyway, for posting this. (Me: "Unedited Griselda! XDDD") <--You'll learn to like me.
The unedited Griselda and Faragonda lines in the beginning sounded very much like what they said in the comic book, which I love. I also like the 4kids version. It'd be nice if they blended them together, but maybe people would get bored of the teachers. I could never, and since it is the intro to Alfea, maybe they should have.
Oh well. One can obtain every version.
Other notable changes to the 4Kids version:
- The 4Kids dub adds Stella showing Bloom's parents a magical slide show of Alfea accompanied by the school song before sending them back home
- On their way to the dorm, unedited Stella talks about the three schools of Magix: Alfea, Red Fountain, and Cloud Tower, whereas 4Kids Stella talks about what Winx is: "Winx is essentially three things. First, it's your source of power, as in your strength and energy. And second, it's what guides you. Thirdly, it's like your magical identity."
- The sign on the front of the dorm originally reads "Varanda di Callisto" (even in English), while in 4Kids it reads "Varanda of Vallisto"
- The 4Kids episode ends on Faragonda saying: "Who is Bloom?", whereas the original version continues with Bloom deciding to name themselves the Winx... but I will address that in Episode 4, because that's where the 4Kids version puts that scene :-) (And I'll have a lot to say about how they treat the naming there :-))
