It's a special edition folks. Come on in.
General edits galore, but first, a bonus from waaaay back in 1x25. I just saw this episode this past weekend, and I found another difference.
Edited: Miss Faragonda and Miss Griffin are standing beside each other. Miss Griffin realizes Faragonda is worried about Bloom, who says she's always felt Bloom was their only hope. But without Bloom, she has to believe there's another way to win. Miss Griffin starts to say something, but Faragonda stops her, agreeing that she's glad Griffin is there. (Source)
Unedited: Miss Griffin starts to say something, but Faragonda tells her, "You don't have to feel responsible," before continuing about how, in the history of magical realms, no one has ever truly lost their powers. She says something like, "Bloom has amazing powers. She cannot lose them."
And while researching for this article, I came across this diff from 1x13...
Edited: Michael mentions that a voice was calling to him. He says that the fire was an entire four blocks burning down with no way to stop it, but when he had picked baby Bloom up, the entire fire went out. (Source)
Unedited: Michael says that the flames seemed to "respect" Bloom.
Hmm...
And now, the general edits. By which I mean, edits that occur in more than one episode...
First, transformations.
Unedited: The Winx precede their transformations by shouting "Magic Winx!" or (say) "Bloom Magic Winx!" in line with most other magical girl shows. Although they did this on and off during the first season, this has become constant since 2x08.
Edited: The only transformation phrase we get is when the Winx call up their Charmix: "Go Charmix!"
Also, transformations are shortened (especially when multiple ones are involved), but I can understand time constraints.
Second, reactions. It bugs me when the reaction makes perfect sense in the original, but not in the edit. Example numero uno from 1x12...
Unedited: After Stella gets her F, she walks dejectedly up to her seat, and embraces Bloom (I guess to cry into her shirt).
Edited: Stella passes the test, but she still walks dejectedly up to her seat, and embraces Bloom so as to cry into her shirt.
(And the original made sense, too, considering how bad she did at the exam.)
Example numero dos from 1x13...
Unedited: After Michael tells of the baby he found in the fire, Bloom is shocked to find out that Michael and Vanessa are not her birth parents.
Edited: Michael tells of the baby he found in the fire, and Bloom is shocked. But this is clearly not because she just found out that they're not her birth parents, because earlier in the same ep (first scene), Vanessa wanted to talk about when she and Bloom's father had adopted Bloom. Bloom groans a bit, saying she knows it was the greatest day of her mother's life (source).
I know it's different from the usual, but still... Bloom is shocked to hear Michael's story, and I still think it should have been because that it means that she was adopted.
And example numero tres from 2x21...
Unedited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella says, "Give me a few minutes..." Of course, at this point, Layla doesn't know why she said this, but then Bloom tells Layla about her parents' divorce, and this makes Layla surprised, and later depressed at herself for not knowing this.
Edited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella says, "It's postcards Layla. My parents are separated." Layla does not have any reaction yet, but when Bloom adds that it's been tough for her the last few years, that's when Layla goes wide-eyed.
Third, "Who are you talking to?" In my house, my dad scolds me when I'm not looking at who I'm talking to. So I guess it bugs me when I know that character A is talking to character B in the original, but talks to character C in the dub. Especially when the footage just doesn't support the edit.
First example from 1x05...
Unedited
Tecna (to Bloom): We could have beaten them... it was four-on-four.
Bloom (replying to Tec): A battle could have made things worse. To me, the exchange was the best possible option bar none.
Tecna: But who are you to decide for all of us??? You're not the boss!!!
Edited
T (to Stella): Then you might have known not to go out on a date???
B (to the others): Hey, you know what? Last night I almost forgot to mix in the mandrake beet. Who knows what would have happened???
T: No wait! You're supposed to mix in a mandrake root, not a beet!!!
(Yeah, and this edit kind of falls under reactions, too.)
Over to 2x05 for the 2nd example...
Unedited: Lockette is about to tell SnakeDarkar the location of their village. Chatta blocks her and explains the rationale for not telling, and she is facing Lockette as she does so.
Edited: Chatta is facing Lockette as she is telling Darkar where their village is.
And 3rd example... from 2x17, after Lucy tells of Bloom giving the witches what they wanted (in the US, Lucy specifically mentions the Dragonfire).
Unedited (Rough paraphrase)
Stella: How could you say that about her???
Tecna: Technically, she did.
Stella (to Tec): Whose side are you on?
Edited (Source)
Stella: You know, they kind of have a point there.
Tecna: The dragon fire was taken.
Stella (obviously, to Lucy): Oh yeah, that's right! The dragon fire was taken, witch!
Your mileage may vary concerning these edits. So, what's your two cents?
