1x06: Mission at Cloudtower / Secret Guardian
In another case of Early Installment Weirdness, I decided to describe the edited version first in the case of one edit...
First, Bloom talks with FG about the dragon stuff she found in books.
Edited: There's a discussion about restricted books that only show a chapter, or paragraph or whatever to students of different levels.
Unedited: There isn't. FG just knows about the dragon stuff.
Second, the Winx arrive at CT.
Unedited: Bloom thinks they need a map, and then she hears Darcy yelling at Knut, so they don't need a map to know where the Trix's room is.
Edited: Tecna has a map of CT loaded. So, she knows where the Trix's room is.
I dunno, the unedited seems funnier.
Third up is when FG decides to punish the Winx by revoking their powers, even though she's fairly sure they have a relevant excuse (the Griz doesn't think so, though).
Unedited: Stella says something like, "You wouldn't do that, would you?" FG: "There are few things I wouldn't do, and this isn't one of them."
Edited: Stella insists that the witches started it (which is what Bloom was trying to do earlier), but FG tells her "Enough."
(NB: Also, the edited apparently snips off the last part of the final scene to underline the seriousness of their situation)
Responses:
For the restricted books discussion, putting up the edited version as unedited confused tanz_fanatika, so I ended up just putting the labels out of order when re-editing to make the thoughts flow better:
tanz_fanatika: I thought we had something about how the restricted books work. *checks summary* Yeah, to quote myself: "Bloom says the only book on the great dragon is restricted and only showed her one paragraph." As well as: "Miss Faragonda herself was only allowed to read two chapters of the book."
(NB: *checks the Winx wiki onWikia Fandom* Exact lines:
Bloom: "When I looked up the Great Dragon, all I found was a restricted book and it would only show me one four-line paragraph." And later... FG: "Let me tell you about the Great Dragon, Bloom. The book showed me two chapters once.")
Me: But in the unedited version, there's none of this "restricted book" business. As I remember, Bloom reads the book about Stella's ring, and it makes a brief mention of the dragon. FG then later tells her a lot of what she knows about it.
tanz_fanatika: So you switched them in your post then. You have the edited as having FG just knowing and the unedited as having the restricted book.
I like the restricted books. It's a neat idea.
(NB: A neat idea that leans into the fantasy setting... and yet has never been expanded upon in any of the versions in the years since given it wasn't part of the original, but what else is new?)
tanz_fanatika, on getting to the Trix's dorm: Tecna actually has a map of the interschool tunnels, not a map of the school, so you wonder how they know where they're going. Unless she downloaded and memorized a map of the school, which was not specifically said. I favor the unedited here, because it's more logical and more amusing.
Does the original still have the problem of Bloom leading them to the book chamber? That always bothered me about this episode. She shouldn't know how to get there!
Me: As I remember, the group happens to come to the library door, and Bloom says something like, "There's something behind here. It's not a way out, but I think we should check it out."
Yeah, not a decision a natural good decision maker would make.
(NB: While trying to find another way out of Cloudtower, they arrive at the library door...
Bloom: There's something behind this door... I can just feel it, it's not a way out, it's something completely different!
Tecna: This is not the time to listen to your sixth sense, we've got to get outta here!)
Other notable changes:
- 4Kids opens with the scene in the Trix's dorm, whereas the original opens in the library, and only has the Trix's dorm scene after the Winx decide to go steal Stella's ring back
- 4Kids adds a Musa voiceover in the library scene, even though she isn't there in the original (and of course 4Kids Musa would tell Bloom to "share the 411")
- Most of the scene in the Winx's dorm uses completely different footage in the 4Kids version (and of course, no Bloom impersonation of Griz), and 4Kids also skips over the scene of the Winx walking outside Alfea, instead going straight to Bloom walking alone down the Alfea hallway
- While they're being attacked by the bugs at Cloudtower, 4Kids gives Musa some more background, and raises the stakes in the process: "We had some in my realm...They got into my friend's castle and I never saw her again!" Remember, at this point 4Kids viewers were still being told that Musa is a princess... and when Layla shows up, 4Kids Musa tells her "I didn't have any close friends before I got to Alfea" (and Frank's review was quick to point out the inconsistency between that and this very incident, conflating careless dub changes with bad writing: "Guess now that she's at Alfea, she's forgotten all about her poor, dead friend. Or more likely, it's just bad writing.")
