1x21: The Crown of Dreams / The Frozen Palace
We begin at the very start of the episode.

Unedited: Bloom wakes up in the chasm, and has a short flashback to slip sliding down to where she is right now, before considering herself lucky. Back up there, Musa decides to let the Yeti thinks it's rid of them.

Edited: On the surface, Musa decides to look for Bloom with an energy sensing spell. Meanwhile in the chasm, Bloom survives the fall due to the padding on her outfit.
(NB: 4Kids Musa says, about her spell, "I use it when I need to find my Dad backstage and I don't have reception", and then next season, it turns out she doesn't have the best relations with her dad, or even music... Also the 4Kids version has Tecna saying that the avalanche covered the chasm completely... even though we later see a shot where it isn't covered at all)

Bloom has found out about her past and is crying.

Unedited: She's tearing up at her sister's sacrifice, and the fact that her parents? Still alive, but in self-imposed exile. She promises once she's done dealing with the Trix, she'll look for them. (Incidentally, every time Daphne appears to Bloom starting from this point onwards, she rubs in the sister relationship. Like, "Come, my little sister!")

Edited: She knows she's REALLY screwed up bigtime letting the DF fall into the witches' hands. She promises to deal with the Trix.

And now, the ice crab battle, and a matter of aesthetics...

Unedited: Musa worries about the ice crabs coming in. About 15-20 seconds later, she's hovering in the air and attacking them with a "Sonic Mega Blast!" She floats down, and we get a close-up of her saying HA! Then the Specialists arrive to do their thing.

Edited: The Specialists arrive. Meanwhile, Musa wonders if the ice crabs like rap. She raps for about 15-20 seconds, before attacking them with a "Double Subwoofer Blast!" She floats down, and we cut to the Specs doing their own thing.

Battle's over. The Specs are here to take them home.

Unedited: They claim that the teachers opened a portal for them, but isn't the plane a bit big? (Not that they actually say that the portal has to be done within the simulator, but at first listen, it does sound inconsistent.)

Edited: Interdimensional drive, anyone?

tanz_fanatika will definitely defend the dub on this one ;)

One thing that doesn't change: Real!Sky has broken up with Diaspro, and Bloom is quite happy about it, before cracking a deal with him that she doesn't have to call him "Prince" (but in the 4K version, she calls him "Baby" instead).

Responses:

tf, questioning my choice of words: Defend implies that the dub is under attack, you realize. I don't feel either version should be "attacked" or "defended" really. It's simply a matter of opinion if someone prefers one to the other.
(NB: I was hardly implying anything with that choice of words; given the history of anime fans complaining about 4Kids' alterations to their various properties, I was originally expecting viewers to be critical of 4Kids when told of what's been altered, but given TF's comments, I had come to expect her to support changes that were, or at least reasonably could be seen as good)
I can do without the baby and the rap. Blah. But I don't like the whole sister thing being mentioned constantly either. That sounds almost as lame. So both versions have ups and downs. Again, nothing major here to discuss.

I don't like the whole sister thing, either, since it's clear that Daphne is, in one form or another, still looking out for Bloom. So it's not that big a deal. About the only thing from this that I wish the US version kept was the talk about Bloom's parents being in exile. Bloom looking into her roots was a minor plot thread in season two that seemed to come out of nowhere, and having even a line in here would make it a bit stronger. (By the way, I'm guessing the parents will somehow play into season three's story.) But other than one line/plot point, it's nothing really major.

tf: Yeah, I agree. It would have been nice to keep the parents line in. I hope we see something done with this next season. I want to know more about the background of the last witch coven, too!

From a later post:

Unedited: Tecna runs a bunch of tecnobabble by Stella as she is boosting her sunlight powers (something about focusing her ion energy and stuff). Yes, kiddies, that scene in 2x18 isn't the only time she boosted someone's powers. Of course Stella doesn't understand (hence the "Uhh...?" expression), so Tecna runs it by her in plain language: "I'm just making your job easier ;)"

Edited: "Now aren't you glad we took that mathematics and magic honors workshop together?" "Uh? I took that?" "Yeah, you did, but it was early and you slept a lot in class :)"

And also...

Unedited: (Stella while shooting ice crabs) "Isn't the best offense... (shoots crab) a good defense?"

Edited: (ditto) "The only ice I like is the type I can wear!"

tf: Stella and Tecna: I like the amusing 4Kids version much better. Just another example of how the 4Kids version is much funnier and more light-hearted.
Stella dialogue: Stella's much better as a fashion plate. Again, I prefer the funny to the serious.

(NB: You'd think having the techno-nerd try to run techno-babble by the layman [lay-fairy?] would always make for a good laugh :-\)

Other edits:
- Bloom walking through the castle: The unedited has her walking around around the remains of the castle with only her own voice breaking the silence, whereas in 4Kids, she hears memories from her past, such as a lullaby and dinner at the palace (also, the brief flashback shot of the dining room gets a vignette effect)
- When Flora grows ivy on the castle walls to fight the ice crabs, 4Kids has Flora ask: "You know any jazz?" Musa is heard playing a jazz tune on her flute, and Flora explains that "The pterodactyl ivy loves jazz. It makes it fierce and improvisational" as it slaps away the crabs, whereas in the original, the ivy does that on its own without any musical aid
