Another episode with a particularly famous edit :-)
2x10: Crypt of the Codex / Reaching for the Sky
Unedited: The phone conversation at the start continues off the last episode, with Bloom being all gushy about Avalon showing her her family tree. Sky on the other hand seems to be having issues with Bloom spending her time with Avalon, and they argue over this. Ouch.
Edited: Bloom is gushy about Stella's latest idea for a date: a horse ride through a park. Sky on the other hand wants her to come over to RF the next day for serious discussion. Bloom thinks it's Diaspro and they argue over this. Ouch.
The scenes are all generally in the same order in both versions, so the writers screwed up the chronology, just like last season's episode 10 (only without the scene switching).
(NB: In 4Kids, Sky leaves a voicemail for Bloom saying "Uh, hey I just wanted to confirm that I'll see you tomorrow"... on the actual day he's supposed to be meeting Bloom)
Unedited: Time for self-defense... WITH GRISELDA! Griz asks the class, "Now, you are up against an enemy much more powerful than you. This enemy has just cast a terribly destructive spell, what do you do?" Musa answers, "We combine powers!" The Griz says "Too late Musa! You've just been pulverized into oblivion." Stella: "Good thing you told us, 'cause otherwise I would have stood there before I finally get hit." This is why Stella holds her mouth as if she should've just kept it to herself.
(NB: I originally added an italicized "Frank" to the end of that line as a bit of a light ribbing against a comment he made in his review about Stella's illogical reaction in the 4Kids version of this scene; we'll see why I ended up taking it out in a moment)
Edited: Magical cuisine seminar... oh no it's not! It's Griselda's Master Combat class. Griz blah blahs about winning some gold medal and when Musa is all "Gee, how long ago was that?" the Griz seriously obliges with an answer. Stella complains that she was expecting to learn how to make a meal with a single spell. (Which reminds me of Alfea's chef talking about why they don't use magic to make meals at Alfea.)
Judging from how some of us hate the Griz for tricking them, I'm betting that they'll love the original.
Now, time for me to address the illogicity of Tecna coming along with Bloom (as opposed to Stella). Bloom lets drop the fact that Timmy and Tecna never argue, and that he would never let her down. So I guess Bloom thought that she would probably know how to keep a relationship running rock solid. And then Timmy does let her down. This of course makes Tecna heartbroken. You wouldn't get that with Stella.
(And BTW, two more things: One, I think the Griz blocked Bloom's shot because she was rather worried about her own relationship with Sky, not necessarily because Griz was better. Two, we get a male announcing the attack at RF instead of a female.)
(NB: Much of this random rambling is me addressing various issues Frank mentioned in his review, which I actually originally noted)
So, I just mentioned Tecna being heartbroken. The details are thusly.
Unedited: Tecna is shocked that Timmy is just letting the Trix walk past him with the Codex (even though he had this reasons. Gloomix. Three against one. Enough?), and yells, "YOU'RE A COWARD!" Runs off.
(NB: Incidentally, this is actually the first time Gloomix is mentioned in the unedited; 4K will wait a few more episodes)
Edited: Timmy just lets the Trix run (hello, non-aggression spell!). Tecna decides to get help and runs off.
IMO, this is why Tecna never forgave Timmy up to the trip to the Wildlands. This is also why she gives him the death glare at the start of 2x22 (although "here", the scene goes on with Tecna saying "What are the odds of that being true?"... I get the impression from the summaries that 4K doesn't show her saying this, because you think it doesn't make sense that Tecna deathglares Timmy after his comment... well, it does now!)
Instead, Americans see Tecna hate Timmy because he only ever talks about computers, and won't give (what Brandon would call) the three-month talk. Honestly, I think it's a bit flimsy to hang a hang-up on.
(NB: Indeed, 4Kids does cut away before Tecna's comment; Frank specifically said in his review for 2x22: "I have to wonder if Timmy said something different in the original Italian. I really love Tecna's expression, it's just that it seems unwarranted now." ISTR tanz_fanatika was also wondering about Timmy as well)
Minorness: Over "here", there is no mention of Bloom using a "Griselda bubble" to protect herself from Darcy's attack. (Already starts imagining TF typing, "I like the Griselda mention. It shows that she's been learning in class." I dunno... it doesn't look like the Griz's bubble. It looks more like she's creating some sort of fireshield, but your mileage may vary.)
I mentioned the whole non-aggression spell above. Elaborating...
Unedited: Everyone gets knocked out, so Icy can concentrate on the problem at hand.
Edited: Darcy casts a non-aggression spell on the others, so Icy can concentrate on the problem at hand.
(NB: More specifically, Icy tells Darcy to do so, rather than it being shown as such)
Okay, three things. One, there's no sign of Darcy doing anything to anyone. Two, Timmy is still firing his gun later. (And missing.) And three, having Tecna being mad at Timmy for being a coward is more meaningful to their relationship, IMO.
(NB: In the original, Tec runs away for Timmy being a coward, whereas in 4Kids, Tec says "I'll get help" as she runs away)
(NB2: I remember posting in the community that I expected the non-aggression spell to be the "new good decision potion", i.e., an element that 4Kids just added to the plot seemingly out of nowhere, and TF disliked the potion; however, TF responded "Oh, I'm pretty sure I'll like it"... More on that anon)
Tons of virtual ink have been spilt on this one, preferring the edit over the original. So this one here's only for completeness.
Unedited: Sky. Zapped. No pulse. Witches fly off. Bloom resurrects him. Resurrection sucks :) Bloom hugs Sky. Cue empty shot of RF. End.
Edited: Sky. Zapped. 4K tries to gloss it over as a sleeping spell, but not only retains Flora mentioning no pulse, but also adds Bloom saying he isn't breathing. Bloom "resurrects" him. Sky proposes for her to be his girlfriend, and she accepts. Witches fly off. End.
(NB: This change was pretty much universally agreed on as being a good change, and I don't blame the fans... Frank wrote in his review: "I've got no problem with death being used in a kiddie TV show, but I do have a problem with Bloom bringing Sky back from the dead--she is a fairy! She is not a god! Her dragonfire, and her love for Sky, waking him up is infinitely more believable, and less groanworthy... I mean, I know, I know, it's Sleeping Beauty all over again, but there's nothing wrong with that! Having said that, they should have lost the 'no pulse' line.")
(NB: From a later post, not remarked upon)
Unedited: Athena shoots Icy with a spell that appears to make lots of noise.
Edited: Icy gets hit with a "kindness spell" instead.
Responses:
beruche: It does look like a green fireshield, but since the name was never mentioned on the show and Flora called it, "The Griselda Bubble," in a 4kids chat, I assume that's what it's called.
I'm sorry, but this sounds rude:
"That is why blah blah blah, Frank." It sounds like you're snapping or yelling at him.
(NB: Turns out that Tecna mentions the "Griselda bubble" as such in the 4Kids dub)
(NB2: I was just mentioning his name in good fun here :-\ And beruche wasn't the only one who didn't like all those mentions of Frank...)
tanz_fanatika: Any Diaspro is good Diaspro. Sadly, this conversation is better than her actual appearance.
If Musa has the top grades, you'd think she'd be smart enough to think of "block the spell." I prefer the 4Kids banter, as usual. I still don't like Griselda tricking them into taking her class. Eh, both are flawed.
(NB: Feels a bit of a cheat to conflate Griz's trickery together with the banter :-\ And note the "as usual" on her preference of the 4Kids dialog)
Have you ever noticed that Frank doesn't reply to your posts? Let's stop talking to him, shall we? Unless he replies to one of these, I don't want to see his name mentioned again.
Non-aggression spell is better than illogical Tecna. I don't think I'd like original Tecna much. She sounds like she's out of character a lot.
(NB: I remember TF saying it was A: illogical for Tecna to expect Timmy to attack the amped-up Trix with his little gun, whereas Timmy rightfully thought it was better to stand down, and B: illogical and hypocritical for her to call out Timmy for cowardice and then run away, when she was also standing there doing nothing; so in her mind, having Tecna run off to get help was more in character)
(NB2: Another case of Frank having a different opinion from TF: "The non-aggression spell, though... that was lame. Darcy did not cast any spells on the group. None. Nuh-uh! And Timmy was shooting at the witches. He was a bad aim, sure, but he was still shooting at them! How would the use of a non-aggression spell explain that? It doesn't. I'm not sure why that was added in, since it had nothing to do with nothing. Timmy simply couldn't shoot Icy: that's all it was. He just didn't have it in him. Kinda' makes him a pretty bad student, when you think about it. Tecna needs to scold him for that." That last part is more of less the crux of their entire subplot, which TF was like: "Nuh-uh, Timmy was smart not to do anything, and Tecna of all fairies would understand")
I like the Griselda mention. It shows that she's been learning in class. It's called keeping continuity!
Me: Personally, at the time, I didn't think of any of the illogicities at all. That said, as illogical Tec was, the seeming lack of consequences of Timmy not shooting the Trix seems rather fishy to me... IMO, it's better that Timmy's software talk was merely another nail in the coffin, than being the whole issue between the two.
(NB: There were some tangents about edits from later episodes, which I'll include in the relevant episode)
TF, reacting to another fan saying they thought the original was better than the 4Kids version: So you prefer Sky being dead and Bloom spontaneously having godlike powers? *mind boggles* I guess some people do like Mary Sues.
caithyra, trying to justify the events in the last few minutes: It isn't that spontaneous if you think about it... The Dragon was supposedly a very powerful being (according to 4Kids, it created the magical dimension), three witches went as far as killing a whole planet to get its powers, and it was the only thing with enough powers to create the Army of Darkness/Decay, and so powerful that when in the hands of a couple of young witches who never finished their last year at Torrenuvola can beat Griffin, Faragonda and Saladin (admittedly, the Trix are POWERFUL, but I like to think that the headmaster/mistresses are more powerful, especially when you take experience into account).
Is it so much of a surprise that the natural holder of the Dragon Fire (in the EU version, Faragonda says that the only one able to use the power of the DF correctly/to its full potential/you get what I mean, is Bloom) has godlike powers?
Does that make Bloom any less of a Sue? No.
One of the problems with these discussions is that, sans the voices, the EU version is actually better when watched than when one reads about it here.
TF: Not being especially surprising doesn't make it any less of a travesty. I think my considering it spontaneous isn't really that she doesn't have a basis for that type of power, but that she's never used it that way before and never had any idea she could. So she suddenly is a master of life-saving for her boyfriend. Whoopty freakin' Sue.
Also:
- In the unedited, after class Bloom is critical of Sky: "Sky's been acting weird like he's suspicious of me. I'm starting to think he doesn't like me anymore. Every time he calls, he seems angry and he becomes so critical. I don't get it. How could boys be so selfish?" While over at RF, Sky is thinking that Bloom is being selfish: "Girls are so selfish it's unreal." In 4Kids Bloom is certain that Sky is planning to break up with him, while over at RF Sky is practicing his speech... for asking Bloom to be his girlfriend :-)
- When Sky tries to call Bloom and gets voicemail, the original version has a generic female voice saying "Bloom can't come to the phone right now. You may leave a message after the tone, but not if it's you Sky." Whereas the 4Kids version has a message featuring Bloom, Stella and Musa:
Bloom: Hey, you've reached Bloom-
Stella: That's Princess Bloom, of Sparks-
Musa: And planet Earth.
Bloom: Just leave a message.
I mentioned the original voicemail message in my review and TF said: "The original actually has a funny line. I'm floored." (Shades of the "Color me amazed" incident from 1x05, IMO)
- The original version also sets up Tecna's heartbreak by having her be disappointed when Timmy responds to Tecna asking him why he isn't coming to fight by saying "My place is here", while in 4Kids, Tecna says "I'll see you later, be careful, okay?" and Timmy responds "You too. Be careful, Tecna." But they still leave in Tecna's look of disappointment :-\ When I reviewed the episode, TF said of the original scene: "Why is Tecna disappointed Timmy's place is at a keyboard? That's where his strengths are! If she wanted a sword-swinger, she should have picked another Specialist. That seems very illogical of her."
- A visual edit for continuity: When Icy freezes the glass around the Codex, the 4K version actually shows it shattering (with CGI that probably looked dated even in 2005), and shots originally showing the casing intact have been altered to show the broken glass
