WinxTalk Podcast #8

Well, time for a new podcast. This week, reviews of Mirror of Truth and Mission to Tides. About 16 minutes and 4MB.

Transcript:

Today, we end the first big arc of the 3rd season, and kick off the next arc with a big battle in Layla's backyard... or should that be, backwater? All that, and the latest ratings news, on WinxTalk Podcast #8 with your host SpiderBraids.

First up, a recap of "Mirror of Truth", the 4th episode.

So, the Winx's mission to restore Stella's looks hit a major snag when they were carried off by a griffin. So this week, we have a cool scene with Tecna and Musa fighting off two griffins and their mom. For some reason, Flora doesn't want to hurt them, but let's face it Flo, they're not treating you and your "babies" well either.

Okay, a few minor snags later, we're finally at the titular Mirror of Truth. It's been drilled into our heads that it'll only work if Stella's meant to be pretty. And it's also drilled into our heads that Stella can't accept being plug-ugly.

Anyways, the Mirror is a lake. Seriously. Brandon is with Stella, and Brandon explains that the whole spell thing he was under since last week wore off on the ship. Stella is surprised to hear that Brandon still loves her even now. He even gets the other girls in on the act.

[The girls tell Stella what they think of her]

Brandon also offers her a gift. A small compact.

[Clip of above]

So, Stella the human is back! Back at Alfea, there are some new faces. Let's listen in...

[Flora talks about meeting a girl from a realm where plants write books]

[Musa meets Princess Galatea]

[Stella meets Nova]

And these new faces could come in handy, as Faragonda tells us what third year is all about:

[Faragonda talks about the Enchantix and stuff]

So, it's a problem for dead planet princess Bloom. But we don't have time for that issue, since Layla's realm needs a little rescuing from Baltor and friends.

[The girls promise to help Layla]

Okay, thoughts. Freedom Fighter writes:

Nothing special... just plugging and chugging along in the storyline. 6.5/10.

With Stella 'out of battle' and Bloom delegating like a leader should , Tecna and Musa step it up and rescue the girls' 'babies' after having to deal with the mother griffin and her babies. Points for both of them, and Musa needed it.

Though Tecna's new VA still doesn't sound as good as her old one, she is doing a good job of getting into the role and making it her own.

The main part of the first arc of the story is completed as well. Glad to have that over, as I disliked how much stock Stella put in her looks when she should have known that Brandon would stick by her no matter what. But I have a feeling something else will come along later on that makes that point moot once again.

The B-side of that arc looks like it will carry over into a latter part of the season, just as the girls start up their third year at Alfea. The deal with Chimera and her mother Cassandra, muscling their way into the royal palace, will be a real sticking point for Stella's happiness.

On that note, in comes the introduction for the next power upgrade for the girls... the Enchantrix. Getting it is the only way to pass the year at Alfea. To obtain it, according to Miss Faragonda, requires each girl to save someone they know in their own respective realms. The Stella situation already presents a possibility, even if an unpopular one with her. Not thought of by Stella... the person probably needing saving being her father, the King. Musa meets a girl who's from the same musically-inclined realm. There's the question of who Bloom saves when, at this point in time, she is the only known survivor of Sparks. Possible targets for Flora and Tecna haven't presented themselves yet.

The ripest possiblity for completion at this point lies with Layla, who has reappeared in time for classes. Back yet despondent over how her realm is falling to Baltor and there doesn't seem to be anything anyone can do about it, the girls decide it's time to head out on another trip to help another teammate. Looks like Layla's not only getting screentime next week, but maybe even some star time too. Maybe Layla can help give this season a jump start before it really starts to sink too deep.

I'm betting on the Enchantrix quest being spread out, too. Remember, the Charmix weren't even mentioned until the second half of last season. So there's more time to bring them into the fold, which I hope the writers will do since each girl will hopefully have a good story tied into it.

I'll be really unhappy if they try to force it together all at once. I'm not looking for a Charmix-gathering repeat.

(NOISE)

Speaking of Charmix, couldn't the writers have acknowledged their existence a bit better than that brief mention in Faragonda's speech? Like, having them be used in the first arc?

Meanwhile, Sunni Kitten had a few short words to say about this episode...

(NOISE)

Overall, I liked the episode, although I'm curious as to whether or not the spell Flora cast worked on Timmy and Sky as well.

For villains this season, I can't stand Chimera or the mother. Completely unoriginal, and Chimera's bratty-stuck-up routine is old. Not sure about Baltor yet.

Liked all the new students and hope to see more of Princess Galatea.

(NOISE)

Personally, I wish she would have said more... Reviews for the next episode are after the news.

(News sting)

And now, news from the Winx world. Winx made a brief ratings comeback with the premiere of the 3rd episode on October 28th, scoring a season high 0.7 and 4 share, while Monster Allergy on the CW had a season low 0.9 and 5 share. However, things went back to normal on November 4th with Winx clocking a season low 0.4 and 2 share, while Allergy's numbers went back to a relatively normal 1.3 and 6 share.

Last week, Konami released the new Winx video game "Quest for the Codex" for Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS. Among other things, you get to play as Layla, since this is based on the 2nd season. Also, Konami announced another Winx game, "Join the Club" for the PSP next spring.

And that's news from the Winx world.

(End news sting)

So, moving on to the next episode, "Mission to Tides". Tecna comes up with a portal that allows the Winx girls to sneak out on a mission for a friend. The last time the Winx girls sneaked out on a mission for a friend, the consequences were disastrous when they returned, because Faragonda punished then without even giving them a chance to make their case.

[A clip of that scene from 1x06]

Let's hope that the teachers are more understanding this time. Faragonda herself should be more understanding than that...

Anyways, Tecna's come up with a little something to get them to Tides. Check this out:

[Tecna and her transporter]

Stella is staying behind at Alfea. She gives the excuse of the other girls coming down with the flu, and she has the pixies (yes, they're all back) and Kiko to impersonate them while they're gone.

[Stella and the pixies]

We also have our first battle of the season between the Trix and the Winx. The good news: The Trix have new powers, such as Icy now being able to create fire. The bad news: We get gypped out of a good battle between two pyromaniacs, because Icy uses her good ol' ice powers on Bloom. For that matter, the battle wasn't exactly up to snuff on either side.

And that's not all the good news - bad news there is. Good news: We get to see Layla's folks. Bad news: We expected this episode to be bit more Layla-centric. Good news: Convergence makes a return. Bad news: The Winx STILL haven't used their Charmix at all this season.

To top it all off, Layla gets hit by a blindness spell. Hey, Bloom's been there before... Speaking of her, of course, we're obliged to learn that Bloom and Baltor have a connection. Let's hope this plays out good.

Freedom Fighter says...

(NOISE)

The freefall ends... a good episode. 7.5/10.

When Tecna's not fawning over Timmy, she shines as bright as Bloom, Stella, and Layla do in their best moments. And that's pretty bright. Maybe Tecna's new VA has something to do with it... she has the right mix of imitation of the old VA with her own. That, and she sounds more down-to-earth instead of holier-than-thou-because-I'm-a-genius.

Both the Trix and the Winx look a bit sloppy in this battle. The Trix definitely weren't up to snuff, especially Icy, who reveals Baltor gave her a new fire-generating power... only not to even attempt to use it during the fight! What's with that?

We end with Layla getting blinded by Baltor with a spell. That sucks for her. 'Adapting to loss of a sense' and 'compensating for a handicapped teammate'... those two plot devices are wanted on stage for next week's episode!

The Bloom-Baltor connection will definitely be one to watch. That practically alone guarantees the bit about Bloom's home realm of Sparx will be resolved this season.

(NOISE)

The whole deal with Icy and her new powers and not even using them in the battle reminds me a lot of Lori's complaint in the S1 finale about not having a battle between Bloom's dragon and Icy's dragon. I mean, Icy froze Red Fonutain with it, yet couldn't be bothered to use it against Bloom and her dragon? In both cases it boils down to the introduction of their new powers being rendered pointless by their lack of use in battle. Hmm...

Tricia Robateau also chips in her two cents about this episode:

(NOISE)

I thought it was a pretty good ep overall. Though now I'm curious to know who Baltor is. I have a guess but I want to know his relation towards Bloom. It was also cool at how we got to see Layla's realm and how Ms. F actually bought the excuse, and I loved the disguises, it was pretty good. I thought it was kinda funny too.

(NOISE)

Next week, Stella continues to stay behind at Alfea, as the others go about going to the bottom of the ocean to fix Layla.

And that's it for this edition. You can drop feedback off at my blog at spiderbraids.livejournal.com , or at the Yahoo! Winx Group at tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/winx . We'll see you in two weeks. Thanks for listening.
