The Amazing Race 12: Season finale
Jan. 29th, 2008 09:09 amNo, I haven't fallen off the face of the earth :-)
So, we're down to some mellow hippie couple, the best performing parent/child team in TAR history, and TAR's first grandparent/grandchild team (and relatives to a country singer, to boot). Hey, at least we won't be getting really horrible winners this season, right Eric and Danielle? :-)
1. Usually, TAR finales have been, fly to Alaska or Hawaii, do tasks, and then fly to the mainland final city. Well, this year, Anchorage, Alaska IS the final city. The first clue was to pick up their next clue, plus some gear, at some store in Anchorage. As Nick and Don found out the hard way, after they had reached the next clue marker, the gear was for the Detour. It's been pointed out that the Detour was at some place called "Ship Creek", which leads to some nasty mondegreens in some viewers' minds :-)
2. Your choice: cut open fish with a knife, or look through crabs with gloves for one with a TAR ribbon, with the tools provided in the gear bag of course. While Nick and Don were going back to the gear store, TK and Rachel looked through crabs, while Ron and Chris cut open fish. As has been the case for most of the season, Don has had experience relevant to the given task, so he breezed through the fish cutting easily. R/C were first followed by TK/R, and then D/N. (According to TWoP's summary, they got a taxi driver who made a quip referencing TAR3. Hmm...)
3. Next, a trip to some glacier. TAR decided to surprise the racers by having the racers climb the glacier to get to the next clue, after which they had to make their way to, well, some big clearing.
4. It's the final roadblock, folks, and it involves memorizing what you've seen and done on the race. Even at home I couldn't figure it out (then again, I was caring for the racers more than trying to solve the problem). The idea is you have to put one item from each leg of the race on to a stage such that they fit a certain set of requirements. Phil: "If you think it sounds easy..." Me: "It doesn't :-|" Christina was shown to have 9 items right the first go round, while Rachel had just 7, but TK/R had prepared specifically for this kind of task, and thus Rachel figured out her combination before Christina. What tripped both Chris and Rachel up was that one of the requirements was for some of the items had to be animals or their byproducts, and one of the answers was the cleaning guy from the Japan leg. I should also note that Ron did not yell at Chris for Rachel passing her.
5. And back to Anchorage to find Cook's view of the sleeping lady, and then something called The Salmon Hooker. My reaction upon hearing the 2nd name: "WHA???" They're both statues, BTW.
6. And then back to the boonies for the finish line at some airport, with the goths looking pretty after a few days in sequester :-) So anyways, TK/R finished first, with R/C in second, and eventually, N/D finishing in 3rd. (According to Nick, he did finish the Roadblock, although this wasn't shown.) Don is the oldest ever final 3 finisher on TAR, and he's proud to have shown everyone, while TK said, "We've shown that nice guys can finish first." Amen.
7. General reaction to TK/R's win has generally been a mix of "Satisfying", "Blandest winners ever", and "Would have preferred Ron and Chris" (plus a bit of all of the above). Me? Hey, at least it's not Eric and Danielle (TAR11), or Freddie and Kendra (TAR6). Right? :-) Till next season, folks.
