TAR Asia, 2x11-12
Feb. 14th, 2008 08:00 pmFinale is tonight, but first, let's summarize the last two weeks.
2x11:
1. We're still in Budapest, and somehow, Paula and Nat got so lost finding the fountain last week, they were already a couple hours behind everyone else at the start of the leg. Anyways, this leg had a Fast Forward, and it was just like the fence counting task in Lithuania, except much, MUCH harder: counting the posts on a bridge across the river. Marc and Rovilson (Philippines) and Adrian and Collin (Singapore) went for it, with team Singapore getting the correct answer first and eventually claiming first place.
2. For those who were not going for the Fast Forward, they went to some underground cellar in a castle to play Raiders of the Lost Clue. It was the Roadblock, which involved finding a box with their next clue, and this was one of those "find the clue" tasks with booby boxes saying Try Again.
3. The next stop was St. Margaret Island, and the clue called for racers to pedal to where St. Margaret lived and pick up a souvenir of the island, which turned out to be a small plush bunny. (St. Margaret Island is also known as Rabbit Island.)
4. Next task called for a return to Budapest and its big city square, where there was a Yield, and the next clue. M/R weren't too keen on Yielding anyone, but since they had an "alliance" with P/N, they yielded Ann/Diane (Malaysia) anyway.
5. The next task was a detour. Either pronounce the names of the kings of Hungary, or play Rubik's. Personally, I would have gone for the kings, if only because I already knew that "Nagy" is pronounced Nahj rather than Nah-gee. The racers that took this option had to ask locals how to pronounce the names. Paula and Nat even tried asking a guy with a violin who just wanted to play his violin for cash. Hee.
6. The Rubik's option wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be, though, as they only had the racers get one side of the cube correct at a time, with the racers switching off after each color. M/R continued their mugging for the camera while doing it, but what's new?
7. Lastly, the pit stop was some place at the top of some huge hill called the Citadel. M/R took 2nd place again, while with no bunching in the leg, it pretty much meant that Paula and Nat would have no chance of catching up, so they were eliminated. It should be noted that both of the teams I was rooting for this season finished in 5th on their respective races (the Goths on TARUS12, the Thai team on TARA2).
2x12:
1. Next stop, South Africa, and by way of connection choices, Ann and Diane were in last. After looking for the next clue in a meadow (another one of those "Try Again" tasks), the racers had to drive to a car race-track. Interesting, Vanessa and Pam were in first at the race-track. The idea was that racers had to drive 8 laps around a track, however, they would get a penalty after the first 4 laps if they took more than 7 minutes for the first 4 laps. The only team that didn't get penalized was (of course) M/R, which allowed them to overtake A/C. The non-Roadblocking racer from M/R compared being left out of the task to not being allowed to eat at a buffet. Heh.
2. V/P were first out of the race-track, but they've always had a tendency to get lost, thereby nullifying any gains they've made. Today was no exception, as they had such a hard time finding an orphanage in a certain township, that they dropped to 3rd. M/R were in first, and had enough time to play tic-tac-toe, painting the orphanage walls for charity. Didn't we already have a charity task this season?
3. After the painting and tomfoolery was finished, each team was told to give the orphanage a check for 32,500 rand, or US$5,000. Interestingly, the subtitling kept putting up "dollars" for "rand", except when A/D were giving their check. M/R even made a formal presentation out of the check-giving. Oh, look, you're mugging for the camera again (rolls eyes)
4. Next task was to drive to some wildlife preserve out of town. As usual, V/P had no idea where they were heading. So what else is new?
5. At the wildlife preserve, the Detour task called for either feeding elephants, or scooping up elephant dung. Everyone went for the latter, and naturally, some racers referred to the stuff with a different word that kept getting bleeped out, because even if it IS the proper context for the word, it's still not good to say on TV. Hee. M/R noted that the task of scooping elephant bleep was appropriate for their level of humor. Nice to know you have flaws, M/R...
6. The clue said they could only use the provided tools: a couple shovels and a wheelbarrow. V/P got tired of having to use the shovels so they decided to just use their hands. The way this was presented made it look as if they were going to be penalized at the pitstop for that.
7. Pit stop was some ranger's retreat in the middle of the preserve. There wasn't any penalty for V/P's use of hands apparently, and A/D were finally eliminated. So our final three are: Marc and Rovilson (Philippines), Adrian and Collin (Singapore), and Vanessa and Pamela (Singapore). It should be noted that the three teams have, between them, won EVERY SINGLE LEG. That has never happened in the US edition, although TARUS5's first leg was the only one that wasn't won by that season's eventual final three (and even so, one of the final three reached that leg's pit stop before being sent back to properly finish the leg, plus the team that actually won that leg were elimmed the next week).
8. Caltex has been running ads of previous eliminated racers (apparently being interviewed right after their elimination) saying that they're expecting M/R to win, but would rather see A/C win. We'll see how that pans out.
