Winx Club: The Shadow Phoenix (part 1)

spiderbraidsLeading in to Nick US's broadcasts of their re-dub of S3, here's a four-part summary for the last of the four specials. So after 3 specials devoted to season 1, we're only getting one special for all of season 2. Get ready for a bumpy ride...
We open at the back of Alfea, where a Specialists transport is parked. Sky: "Isn't it great to have everything back to normal?" Bloom: "You mean no invading armies? No monsters? No Trix?" Sky: "Yeah, just chillin', you and me." Bloom eyes the others: "And all of our friends..." Stella is talking to the other friends: "Furthermore, if it were up to me, they would lock up the Trix and throw away the key." TV Burp... Poetry Corner. Tecna and Timmy come in. Timmy: "I'm really glad we're all together."
The screen goes light-blue... to reveal a big rock structure in a cave, with waterfalls flowing from it. We close in on a girl with dark skin and dark brown hair climbing it (!) Girl: "The pixies. I have to get to the pixies!" She climbs to safety, and we get a good look at her. Her hair is wavy and she is wearing a pink sweater, blue pants, and other assorted things.
We hear high squeaky voices, coming from a cage of bright energy, and I suppose these are the pixies. "We must all promise." "Everybody promise." "We must never show the Phoenix the way to Pixie Village. Never. Never ever ever!" Purple-haired pixie with goggles: "Shh, quiet, someone's coming!" And here's the girl. Red-haired pixie with roses in her hair: "Aisha! Oh, you've come to get us!" Aisha: "Of course! I wouldn't leave you here." Magenta-haired pixie with keyhole dress: "The lock is on that wall." We see an array of skulls on the wall. Somehow, Aisha sees where the lock is: "Okay, I see it." She summons a bright pink ball of energy and fires at the lock: "Got it!" The energy cage dissipates causing them to fall to the bottom. Aisha scoops up the pixies, and we see there are 8 of them (I'll save descriptions for when they are relevant). Aisha: "Everybody ready?" Pixies: "YES!" Aisha: "Good, because there's no time to waste. We've got to find a way out of here, and fast!" Aisha hauls butt with her pixies. A dark-skinned pixie with a pink hoodie climbs up Aisha's shoulder and sits in a loose gap in Aisha's sweater.
We hear a really evil voice as we see Aisha through an energy blob: "Run as fast as you can, foolish girl, but I see all. You and your pixie friends will never escape me: The Shadow Phoenix!" We see a really evil armored creature. SP cackles as he summons a few creatures: "Arise fellow monsters. Arise and seek out your prey!"
Aisha finds a room. Aisha is casually strolling through the room when one of SP's monsters appears. The other monsters come out and the pixies scream a couple times. Aisha manages to evade the monsters' attacks and rushes out of the room, with a golden pigtailed pixie hanging from Aisha's hair :-D She rushes through another door to reach a wide open space. We see a large flying creature: "Oh no, it's the Phoenix!" Flying creature morphs into SP's usual look: "You can't escape. Hand over the pixies!" Aisha: "Never! I won't let you have them!" SP zaps Layla to knock the pixies out from her: "Wrong answer!" SP picks up the pixies with a ball of pink energy. Pink hoodie is still with Aisha as SP tries to stab her. Aisha puts up a bright pink shield, prompting SP to say "Fighting back? How foolish!" Aisha: "A fairy never gives up without a fight!" SP tries to zap her again: "Very well then!" Aisha gets out of the way, so SP gets physical by using his dark powers to lifting her off thr ground and throw her over a cliff: "Goodbye fairy!"
Back at Alfea, the Winx are saying goodbye to the Specialists as their transport leaves. Flora: "Bloom, I think that there's something in the trees." Stella is waving goodbye to her Brandon as sees Bloom walking towards the forest: "Hey, where are you going?" We see the blurry POV of someone pushing away the tree branches and approaching Alfea. Bloom is surprised to see the dark skinned girl coming: "Are you okay?" We see Aisha's POV blur up as she falls over. Bloom: "Come on, wake up. Come on." Pink hoodie bounces out of Aisha's sweater, and we see Stella's eyeballs following the bounce :-D Stella: "What is it?" Bloom picks up pink hoodie: "I think it's a pixie. Who is this girl? What could have happened to her?" Joel McHale has his theories... :-D (warning, slightly NSFW)
Morning at the Alfea infirmary, Aisha suddenly wakes up: "Where am I?" Aisha looks at her hands, but instead of realizing she's been asleep for 4 days she goes: "Oh no... the pixies..." Flora: "You're safe, at Alfea. Here, this will help with the headache..." Flo applies a (wet) cloth directly to Aisha's forehead. Bloom and Stella are here as well. Bloom: "Can you tell us what happened?" Flo offers Aisha some tea: "Why don't you try some of this. It will help you get your strength back." Aisha takes the tea: "Thanks." Aisha tells her story, illustrated with mostly still drawings:
"My name is Aisha. I was in Gloomywood, on my way to visit my friends, the pixies, when Lockette and Glim found me. (Magenta pixie with keyhole dress and butterfly staff, and orange pixie with odangos) They told me that the other pixies had been captured by horrible shadow monsters. We followed the trail the creatures left. It took us deep underground, until we reached: the castle of the Phoenix." We see the castle as full animation. Stella: "The Phoenix? Who's the Phoenix?" Aisha: "Sometimes he looks like a warrior with blood-red armor, and sometimes he's a giant bird of prey. (sobs) He took the pixies captive, I tried to rescue them but... (sobs some more) I should've never left them." Dude, you're lucky to even be alive after that wacko threw you off a cliff... Musa tries to console Aisha, as Bloom adds: "We'll help you rescue the pixies." Musa: "You can count on us." We see the lone pixie that Aisha didn't leave behind sleeping on a small pillow as Aisha thanks them.
We see a lone fort on a mountain. We see endless fields, and people in robes. A certain white-haired witch is hanging from a hammock in disgust, while another certain witch is annoyed by flowers falling on to her storm-cloud hairdo. Darcy yells at a couple in robes sitting on a bench: "Go away!" The couple disappears, as like a TV being switched off: "They were driving me crazy." Icy: "I just don't know how much more of this I can take." Suddenly, the clouds turn red. Icy: "What's happening?" Stormy: "I dunno..." Darcy: "But I like it!" Icy: "Yes... Something wicked is in the air..." And that something is the Phoenix, and the zoom-in on him walking in is a bit too close for comfort... Icy: "Oh my..." SP: "Come with me. I am in need of your dark hearts." Icy: "Am I ever pleased to hear that." SP teleports them out of there.
Castle of the Phoenix. After a zooming entrance shot (doubtless lifted from the original version) we see SP and the Trix materializing in the main hall, with the Trix back in their usual monogrammed outfits. SP: "And now dear Trix, I will give you a gift: The gift of invincible power!" SP's magic draws arm-length bejeweled bracelets (for lack of a better description) on Stormy and Darcy. Icy gets a necklace, and the Trix bow down to their new master. SP: "And now you serve me, the Shadow Phoenix." Trix: "Yes master." SP: "And soon will the whole Magic Dimension. But first, I must have the Codex, and you will get it for me." Trix: "Yes master." SP: "The pixies have it in their village, which is hidden to all but them. They will never tell where it is, but I have a plan to find Pixie Village and seize their Codex, and those fairies are going to help me!" SP decides to spy on them, talking in a classroom.
FG: "My dear girls, after all that Aisha has told us, it is clear that we are facing a new evil. We must act. We must free the pixies at once." Bloom: "Enter the Phoenix's underground castle?" FG: "Yes, we know where our enemy is, but we do not know exactly who he is. We must be inconspicuous. Only Bloom and Stella will go with Aisha. Timmy will take you there." The girls leave the room. At this point, we also note Aisha's outfit: a pink shirt with a wave symbol on it, along with green shorts, pink socks, and green shoes.
And we suddenly jumpcut to a Specialists transport. Timmy: "I'm heading straight to the valley you told us about. We should be there in just a few minutes." We see the girls in their hiking outfits, and compared to the original, only Aisha has kept her outfit (more or less). Honestly, look at what Bloom and Stella are wearing: Stella is in a light green one-piece will a frill and an orange scarve, and Bloom is in a blue top covered with a light brown midriff-baring jacket tied similar to Stella's original S1 outfit, and short pants. Does anyone actually dress like this? Aisha: "There it is, the entrance to the cave. You should set us down over there." Timmy: "You sure I can't get you any closer?" Aisha: "No, we don't want the Phoenix to know we're coming."
Except that he does. SP: "Just as I planned. I think I'll send the Trix to welcome our visitors." Back with the girls, Timmy drops the girls off. Bloom: "Thanks, see ya!" Aisha enters the cave: "Follow me, this is the way in..."
And another jumpcut as we see the girls walking up a steep hill. Aisha: "come on, it's not much further. If we move fast, maybe we can get to the pixies before the Phoenix even knows that we're here." Stel: "That would be nice." Aisha: "Hurry up you guys..." Stel: "There's no sunshine here. It's making me feel a little weak." Aisha: "I'm going on ahead!" Aisha takes a rope and swings a la Tarzan. (Glad that made it in. No, really.) She swings around, dismounts and grabs the ledge of a "window" to climb in. Pixies: "Aisha!" We see five pixies in one cage and three in the other. Golden pigtailed pixie: "I knew you would come back for us." Aisha: "Time to get you guys out of here."
Back with the other girls. Bloom has crossed the bridge: "Stella, are you alright?" Stella is still struggling along: "Yeah, feeling great. I'll be there in just a sec." Bloom: "Okay, I'm going to catch up with Aisha." No sooner than she says that though, does a bolt of pink lightning strike her. Bloom sees three familiar figures descending from the sky. (Speaking of which, Sky and Brandon aren't on this mission like they are in the original. HUH.) Bloom: "What are those things?" They hear a familiar cackling. B/S: "The Trix!" Bloom: "Stella Transform!" One transformation later... Bloom: "I don't see them. Where'd they go?" Stormy fires off a tornado: "Shadow Whirlwind!" Tornado goes after Stella, whose scepter (emitting a star-shaped energy shield) is ineffective against it. Darcy materializes from nowhere and easily zaps Bloom into a standstill. Darcy: "The Phoenix was right." Icy: "Oh sisters, we're better than ever."
Aisha shows up in her sparkly green fairy outfit: "Hey, it's not over yet!" Aisha fires off her power at Icy... who takes it easily: "Actually, it is." Darcy teleports behind Aisha to zap her as well, and Aisha's fairy outfit disappears (after we've only seen it for, what, 5 seconds?) Icy: "Nice work sisters."
As the sisters examine their handiwork, we see a wing with a bright orange glow unfold. We see a dark-gray-haired warrior in wings giving off a really bright glow. Trix: "What is that? / I can't see anything! / What's going on?" Winged warrior restores Aisha back to full health, takes Bloom out of her standstill (and her fairy outfit), and makes Stella well again, before putting the Trix in a bubble and sending them off with Latin. The girls cheer as the winged warrior comes in and bows to them before flying off. Bloom and Stella are in awe as they hear several voices calling out "Aisha!" Aisha: "The pixies!" Aisha sees them coming rather forcefully: "Wait a minute!" CRASH!
Aisha introduces the pixies to Bloom and Stella. Red-haired pixie with pink outfit introduces herself to Stella: "I am Amore, pixie of feelings." Stella: "You're wonderful." Lockette introduces herself to Bloom as the pixie of directions. The background turns pink as both pixies get to know the girls. Blue-grey haired pixie: "They're bonding." Aisha: "Yes, it's like love at first sight. And now their bond is unbreakable."
SP is spying on this as usual. SP: "My plan is in motion. I will have the pixies' secret, and the Dragon Flame! (cackles)"
So far, the story has been rather coherent, although with a few abrupt jumpcuts, but I suppose that's to be expected since they're trying to fit a whole season's content into one hour...
Okay, voices. Keke Palmer was the very first voice actress to be confirmed for the Nick version, and it appears that she's trying to sound like Taranee Cook (W.i.t.c.h.). The original (non-4K) dub voice always seemed to have a bit of apprehension to it, so I would say this voice is quite a bit of a step up, but then again, it lacks the tomboyish deepness of the 4K voice... The Shadow Phoenix gets a rather generic but menacing villain voice. Better this voice than the over-the-top-ness of 4K's version...
And of course, there's also the issue of Nick reverting Layla's name back to Aisha. Interesting choice since even though Aisha is the Italian original, pretty much everywhere else used Layla... Heck, typing up this recap, I kept typing Layla before having to correct myself :-\ Not getting as much attention is that they're apparently only going to call this new villain the Shadow Phoenix. I guess they thought Lord Darkar sounded a bit too cheesy...
