The Editor's Spotlight: Magic in My Heart

Like last episode, lots of heavy editing permeates this episode, but unlike last episode, no big plot points (hello, Diaspro's rant!) are removed. This whole episode was really switched around a lot, so I'll go by the order in which the events are shown in the original.
Unedited: (right at the start) Musa walks out on stage. Her voice is empty. The audience is robots. Spotlights go out. During the above, she narrates thusly: "Bloom thinks my voice is fantastic, and that the audience will cheer, dance, and sing along with me. She's convinced that tonight, the lights in my career will be switched on one after another."
Edited: (after a scene of Musa and Layla at RF, and before the 2nd commercial) We start with a shot of Musa sleeping. (The only episode I can think of with considerable footage of Musa sleeping, and thus where this clip is from, is actually an S1 episode, "Nightmare Monster".) We see the sequence above with a slight green tint, without the narration, and with the sound of lone clapping added to the end as the spotlights are going out (not to mention a little added announcement). Musa wakes up and she talks to Tecna (who like Bloom is actually absent from the original version, and is absent from the 4K version except here). Musa tells Tecna of her nightmare, mentioning that she thinks the one person clapping was her Mom.
Next!
Unedited: (after the above) Musa is on stage and she looks up in the sky. We see her at her mom's tomb placing flowers. We then see a scene at mom's first concert. (We'll revisit this tomb a few more times in the story, as well as the end scene.)
Edited: (after the 2nd commercial) Same as above, minus mom's first concert, but we only visit the tomb two times: here, and at the end. They do splice in a shot of tears falling on the grave from a different tomb visit, though.
Let's get this party started!
Unedited: (after the witches stick lipstick to Brandon) Layla dances in her bedroom for Musa and Francis (and a few pixies) to see. This leads straight into a nice sequence at the concert where she dances with Mirta and Francis and blows the crowd away.
Edited: (before Musa's nightmare) Layla dances in her bedroom for Musa and Francis (and a few pixies) to see. Musa says, "You're gonna blow them away!" Scene ends there.
As boring as it was, I still feel this dance was rather necessary, since the last two episodes have been spent with Layla talking about nothing but dancing. So, why not show that she loves dancing, by showing her dancing at the concert? (Also note that she doesn't make any references to dancing for the rest of the season, making Layla's dance the climax of all that dance talk.)
Rehearsals!
Unedited: (after Layla's dance) Musa rehearses the song that she performs at the concert. Musa wants to practice the sax solo. Stella throws her the sax. "Are you nuts?! This saxophone costs a fortune!"
Edited: (after the witches stick lipstick to Brandon) It looks like Musa is considering different songs for her concert. After Stella thinks that the last song she just sung (which isn't the one she performs) was the one she should do, Musa thinks she should do one with a sax solo, so Stella throws her the sax. "Be a little more careful Stella, that is my dad's saxophone."
I think I already know what Lori will say... "It's more meaningful for Musa when that sax is her dad's... even if it's a bit incosistent with the later mention of dad throwing out all his instruments. Also, why does she say the song has a sax solo when in the actual performance there isn't?"
Dad shows up. More minor editing... (In both cases, after the rehearsals)
Unedited: First they discuss about Riven, and daddy insults him (this part is bookended with scenes at the tomb, one of which I believe has her crying tears on the grave). Then they talk about Musa and music. Dad decides to transfer her.
Edited: The discussion is exclusively about Musa and music. Dad threatens to remove her. There are no scenes at the tomb.
Flashback time! (Follows the above)
Unedited: We head straight into the flashback from the argument scene, and we lead off with Musa's dad watching future mom's first show. Daddy hadn't written anything, so he had to write a song to pitch to future mom. There is also a brief scene of dad counting banknotes, and seeing that he's only got a few, in between the shot of the parents' wedding, and a shot of another concert. Near the end of the flashback, we briefly see Layla and Musa standing on the RF balcony watching birds fly by, before we see the rest of the flashback.
Edited: The flashback is preceded with the scene of Layla and Musa watching the birds (a short snippet of Musa talking with Layla there also remains in the same spot, however, so we actually see that short snippet twice with the space of like 2 minutes). The flashback to mom's first night is shown here, followed by most of the flashback as originally shown. Daddy worked all night to finish the song he pitched to future mom, and it was called "Magic in My Heart". The scene of dad counting his money is no longer there, however. The flashback no longer addressses financial trouble.
Okay, flashback's over! (Follows the above)
Unedited: "You know, I think your dad is just scared that if you follow a musical path, you'll end up like your mother." "Oh Layla. I want to be the fairy of music, and I don't want to lose either you guys or my dad." "That'll never happen Musa. Just give a great show and don't worry about anything else. Okay?" Insert two stills of Dad running through flowers with Musa, and Musa looking happy, with Musa's V/O on top, before time-lapsing into the evening. (Leads into the concert)
Edited: "Sounds like it was too painful for him to be around music, and based on what he said this afternoon... it still is." "What do I do? There's no way I can peform tomorrow. I don't want to leave Alfea, and I don't want to lose my friends!" "Then we'll cancel the show, and I'll extend my dance to fill up your time slot. We can work on it tonight, together. Everything's going to be okay, sweetie." We time-lapse into the evening. (Leads into the partial dance scene)
I dunno. In the unedited, Musa's dad does seem to have a legitimate reason not to let her sing, but in the edited, it just seems like he's banning her for the heck of it. Or, "No music because I said so!"
Unedited: (after the above) Stella and Musa have their duet first, then the RF show, then Musa's gig. Musa fights Stormy! And then we fade to the end scene after it's done.
Edited: (after the visit to the tomb) Coda leads off with the RF show, then Musa's gig, and then the Stormy fight. We then have the duet before the end scene at the tomb.
Time for Musa to shine!
Unedited: Layla makes a point of two elf muses coming in to watch Musa perform. These two elf muses are the same two who start singing in the teachers' section. This is why Musa is freaking out backstage. After she comes out, Musa announces, "This is a song that I wrote, called 'A Sky Without Moon and Stars'."
Edited: The shot of the two elf muses coming in is shown right before the RF show. The backstage part is edited down a bit, with no mention of those two elf muses either here or anywhere in the episode. Musa announces "This is the first song my dad ever wrote for my mom."
Alright, time for the Musa/Stormy fight!
Unedited: "Fire away Musa, but think what your sonic bombs will do to these people. Do you really want to hurt them???"
Edited: "Oh, we're not fighting Musa. You're surrendering, or I'm destroying your father RIGHT NOW!"
Like Musa's dad, Stormy had a better point in the unedited version, but in the edited version she's being all "No fighting becase I said so!" Of course, you could argue it's a case of "Drop your gun RIGHT NOW!"
Also:
Unedited: There's a brief shot of the elf muses explaining that the power she gets from music will overwhelm the witch.
Edited: The shot of the elf muses is removed, and Riven is explaining it to the spectators instead.
Now that we've dealt with what was in the original, let's deal with what WASN'T in the original. The first couple minutes of this episode is actually clips cut from 2x14.
Edited: The show leads off with the Stormy/Musa battle, where Stormy is looking for the Codex with a spying spell. The battle is shown in one go in the US version, instead of as short snippets interspersed with the main plot. After this sequence, is a scene that originally comes before this big battle. Layla decides to show off her old-worldly dance, and she explains that she used to sneak out of the palace and learn these dances from street performers (which intrigues Tune a bit), and it's implied that she never told her parents (judging from the opening to 2x13, I can see why). 2:15 in, we get to the first clip that actually is from 2x15: Stormy disguising herself as a fairy.
Unedited: Even with all they showed, they still left some stuff on the cutting room floor. There was a brief scene of Musa spotting the spying spell in the sky at Alfea, and Musa asking Palladium about it. Also, as mentioned above, the Layla scene actually comes before the big battle. Musa is nervous about the upcoming RF concert (yes, we have forward continuity too!), but Layla decides to teach her a rain dance she could use. She explains that she used to learn these dances from farmers (prompting Tune to comment "How primitive"). And of course the dance she learned comes into play during the big battle.
In other news, WinxTalk Podcast #4 has been revised to include a late update on a news item (HELLO, NEW SEASON!), and to apologize for all the non-permissive quoting. From now on, I will be asking for permission to quote anyone who replies to my posts. (It's the least I can do to keep this podcast going...)
