In a nutshell: We take a visit to Eraklyon, swarming with ninjas. (We get to find out why Sky and Brandon switched!) And also, there is a tilt between Musa and Stormy. Oh yeah, did I mention... Diaspro? Yet, somehow, her return's rather underwhelming. But first, a recaplet for 2x13.
2x13: The Invisible Pixies
This recaplet's almost the bare essentials, but it's still better than nothing. Anyways, we open with young Layla getting ordered around by palace people. And then the palace people turn into clones of Darkar, making her bad nightmare even worse. We find out that Piff has powers to make her sleep more pleasant by lying on her head. Now on to the main plot: Stella and Layla desparately want to cut class, considering how tired they are from all those classes. Bloom and Flora are quick to disagree. Musa comes in with mail. A Charmogram for Stella, a mystery letter for Flora, and a letter from Vanessa for Bloom. Musa mentions Tecna is out to have breakfast with Timmy. Bloom reads her letter... and then decides to go to Earth. It's revealed that mom is slated to testify against the businessmen who burned down her shop and Bloom wants to go support her.
Speaking of letters, Flora writes one for Helia... but Chatta is surprised that Flora doesn't give it to him, even though it's actually in his hand at one point. (And even that scene involving Helia is shown in 2 chunks... why not just show it as one and get it over with?) In a thread continuing from 2x11, Tecna doesn't like Timmy's heatsink gift, or him talking about new software. (At least this one was shown as one scene...) Stella, Musa, and Layla are tagging along with Bloom. Their pixies are heading along too, and it transpires that they're invisible to anyone except children (there's a half-hearted attempt to explain why, but whatev, they're invisible to adults, but not children or dogs, that's all you need to know). Layla reveals herself to be a princess, thanks to her little highly-polished talk to the police.
While Bloom talks with Vanessa over the court stuff and the medallion she got, Layla talks of how she was raised as a princess to learn many things (esp. etiquette!), and how she got frustrated and stuff and started befriending a commoner named Anne who loved dancing (which is why Layla loves dancing!). Later, Layla and Musa get into trouble at some seedy club. Musa mentions that Griselda's magical defense lessons are coming in handy, and speaking of continuity, Bloom's aura powers also get a mention as she sees the evil auras above the club guards. The pixies also help create some havoc. For some reason, some of the screen time is devoted to showing young Layla's interactions with Anne. There are punks eveywhere, but Griz and FG get in on the action as well... before giving them a stern talking-to back at Alfea. The Winx complain about the stress of all their classes, but the teachers don't care. The Griz is telling them to clean the school ("Not again!"... Stella recognizes the deja vu, since this is why she [and all the other Winx] missed a concert everyone at Alfea was supposed to go to in 2x07... and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because the Trix, expecting an empty school, had been planning to totally trash the school just to get even with the Winx, and they ended up getting caught instead, but I digress), this time without music, so they all end up getting tired. Layla mentions Anne moving out to Flora, and Flora still has that letter she didn't give to Helia (or rather, took back from him), so somehow it turns into a discussion about telling Helia, which is aborted quickly when Flora sees Layla asleep.
And now, the main feature, so to speak. It's somewhere between a minirecap and a proper recap.
2x13: Battle on Planet Eraklyon
For no reason at all, we see a smiling Musa walking past two random girls arguing over pixie stuff. Suddenly, the two girls forget what they're arguing over.
Some Japanese looking place. A bunch of ninjas are informing their boss that a bunch of other ninjas have kidnapped some person.
Some hideout place. That person is familar. Yep, it's Diaspro. There's a dog in there. And here come a bunch of Technoninjas. Blah blah blah, they're out to prevent Sky from rescuing her.
Diaspro: "This is bad." Match cut to Bloom saying "This is bad" while getting rained on. While Stella creates a bit of sunlight to dry Bloom off, New!Pally tells us that rain spells were the first technical charms, and Stella correctly knows that this is about droughts and stuff. The class goes on, and Tune wonders why Musa's so rude to New!Pally. Funny, I don't think she was rude...
The Winx (minus Tecna, who doesn't show up again until Hallowinx) split off. Stella is off with Amore to find a sale (and that's it for her this ep). Musa spots a spying charm in the sky, and splits off. Bloom tells us that she thinks she's not so good at being a princess (*sigh* and you're just bringing that up now, Bloom?). Flora asks if it's because of what Tune said in class. Bloom says it isn't, but just then Brandon and Sky come in. Bloom is slated to meet Sky's parents, but Sky is here to call it off, as his home planet is under siege. But of course our Dragonfairy wants to come along to provide a little fairy magic. Flora is tagging along because there's a flower there she wants. Bloom and Flora's pixies are tagging along, but they're not alone, as Zing sneakily tags along (by firing a rope on to Sky's bike) because she's interested in seeing the ninjas on Eraklyon.
Layla at some hall at Alfea. Layla asks Musa, "Is it true that FG has asked you to orgamize a concert at RF?" Yes, and Musa's not sure about what to show. Layla offers to help, and turns on her stereo (Piff gets blasted off!). She dances for Musa, and Musa notices that it's a lot like the rain dance she saw in class (PLOT POINT! PLOT POINT!). Layla adds, "I used to sneak out and learn weather magic from farmers." Tune: "How primitive!!" Musa: "Your parents probably didn't like that." Layla: "So, whattaya think?" (giggles)
(Funny that Musa ends up performing a song instead of dancing, but eh.)
Space flying! Chatta is bored (the "Are we there yet?" kind), but Sky asks her if she' would rather go by train. Some random pixie tells them that they're nearing Eraklyon. Sky is surprised to see the random pixie... and she briefly decloaks her disguise to reveal Zing.
Palace. Sky gets the news, and then gets handed Diaspro's brooch. King mentions Yoshinoya's ransom, and Sky points out that that the ransom would bankrupt the kingdom. So, King wants Sky to go rescue her blah blah blah. Bloom says about a sentence and a half about how she's tagging along with Sky on the mission, and then the Queen cuts her off with "You speak out of turn." I know that's bad, but it's not THAT bad. Sky says stuff about how the fact Diaspro used to her her fiance does not figure into this whole rescue thing and that he's rescuing her regardless and stuff, and then he heads off in a huff, with Bloom following. There's a little chit chat afterwards, where the Queen thinks that Diaspro's still the best candidate for Sky.
While the specs pack up for their little adventure, with Zing tagging along, Bloom laments with Flora over messing up everything in front of the monarchs of Eraklyon. What I wish Flora would have said: "Bloom, you only said like a sentence and a half. And it's not like speaking out of turn is a crime or anything..." Instead, Flo points out that Bloom only found out she was a princess a year ago. Anyways, now they're chasing a teleporting flower. Flora needs it for a project. It's troubling because it can suddenly just disappear and reappear in another place, and using a locator spell would require something from it (which would make the whole point moot... on the other hand, PLOT POINT! PLOT POINT!).
New!Pally is closing doors with magic a la Harry Potter. Musa comes to him. She mentions what she saw in the sky earlier. New!Pally tells her that it's a spying charm, and they don't teach them here. Musa's all "Hmmm" and stuff.
Sky reminds SpiderZing that she doesn't have to pretend to have spider powers, because she is the pixie of insects. They run into the other ninjas and fight them until they find that they're not the ones who 'napped Diaspro.
So now that the whole group is together (Flora has her flower and stuff), it's revealed that Yoshinoya wanted to kill Prince Sky, so this is why they switched. Yup, almost a whole season after the switch came to light, we just got ourselves an explanation. (Incidentally, America gets a different explanation, and it comes immediately after the switch comes to light. But that's not the biggest change made to this ep. Not by a long shot!) Somewhere in there, they use Diaspro's brooch to look for her (remember what Bloom said while chasing the flower?).
They end up running into the Tecnoninjas, who, after revealing who they are as individuals (they have a robot! Chicks dig giant robots!), ID themselves as the Science Ninja Team. Chatta: "COOL!"
Roof of Alfea. Musa finds that Stormy has cast the spying spell. No reason is given, but whatev. Stormy summons clouds... as we cut back to the fight on Eraklyon. Eventually Flora gets hit by a bomb, while Bloom gets beaten by (of all things) a powder puff. Seriously!
Alfea. Musa transforms. She starts to dance. (As she taps her foot, note that her boots are drawn with Stella's boot heels, instead of the standard platforms she has.) Stormy dismisses it as mumbo jumbo and sends her flying back... as we cut back to the Tecnoninjas returning to their lair after beating Sky and co (they call the Prince "evil"!).
Yoshinoya's prison. Flo knows they were ambushed because they were that close to their hideout. Sky realises that the fact that they fight for justice and the fact they kidnapped Diaspro just don't add up. The pixies are not in the cell, and they offer to help. But they have to move fast, because there are only a few hours until sunrise, and once the ransom is paid it'll all be over... and not in a good way either (Bloom and Brandon say so pretty much word-for-word, minus the "not in a good way" part ;) ).
Alfea again. Musa knocks Stormy back with a Bass Boost, and starts the rain dance again, as fog forms around her body, and some weird looking symbols appear around her. Stormy preps a lightning ball as she says: "She's never going to get to the end of that spell." Then, just, I dunno... attack her with that lightning ball of yours to make sure? And then we cut back to the main plot again. You know, as much as 4K has edited this ep, I'm grateful that they presented the whole Stormy/Musa fight as one long chunk. Frequent scene changes are too confusing.
Back with Sky and co. They're outside their cell and in the forest. Lockette's located Diaspro at the Tecnoninjas' hideout. The Specs say that it'd take hours to get their transporter thing, but Flora has something better: her flower. (The fact that she's using the flower she had wanted for her project goes unmentioned ["But you want this for your project, and it's a lot of a hassle to obtain another"].)
There's a con though: the spell doesn't transport but rather switches two people. Sky volunteers, but there's another con: They need someone the same height and weight. Meaning Bloom has to go. Sky wants to abandon this idea altogether, but Bloom justifies herself by saying to the tone of "I don't like her either, but you said to your parents that you wanted to save her no matter what." They need some light, and Zing is keen to oblige (as Doc Ock). Back at Alfea, Stormy is surprised that Musa's rain dance has soothed the storm she had summoned. Hello, why didn't you just, y'know, attack her while she was dancing?
While Zing looks through papers, one of the ninjas (that Jin guy) is about to put some sort of helmet on to Diaspro's head, and then he suddenly sees transformed Bloom where she had been. "Now you're in trouble!" Unfortunately, so is our ability to understand the story from this point onwards. It's as if the story writers just realized now that at the rate they were going, they would run over by several minutes. And so, everything suddenly runs by at light speed. HANG TIGHT!
Cut to outside, and the Specs see a huge column of fire in the sky, and Bloom flies out from the smoke with the Science Technoninjas or whatever following her. The Specs' plan is to hold off until Zing arrives.
In a scene that lasts all of 20 seconds. Diaspro feels it's unfair that Bloom is the one who saved her, and she hates Bloom. She demands an explanation why Sky loves her, and Chatta is about to oblige, when Diaspro cuts her off and then goes into a rant about learning posture, etiquette and court rule (F: "We understand"), all this so she can marry a prince. Chatta points out that there are plenty of princes in the magical realms. That's it for Diaspro's insight on the whole thing...
We cut back to the conclusion of the battle at Alfea: A surprised Stormy gets hit with a Power Chord and she's down on the ground. Stormy expects to strike back, but when she sees everyone looking at her, Stormy decides to save this grudge for later, as Tune is impressed at Musa.
Zing arrives with the paper. Sky tells the ninjas that it's Yoshinoya's ransom note. The ninajs are PO'd.
At Flora's tent, Flo and co hear someone coming. Flo thinks Bloom can't have lost, but beings to think otherwise as the ninjas take the tent off. And then they see Bloom and the Specs, as Sky tells them, "We're on the same side now." The ninajs add, "The side of justice!" Blah blah blah. (Unfortunately it's all between the ninjas and Diaspro, as opposed to Sky and Diaspro, or even Bloom and Diaspro. You'd think that she'd at least apologize for mistaking her as a trick of the witches...)
Back at the palace, the monarchs approve Bloom's bravery as being worthy of a princess, and ask them to deal with the Tecnoninjas to prevent them from attacking again.
You know, I feel rather underwhelmed. I expected that once Diaspro was rescued, she'd have a few choice words with Bloom and Sky. (I'm sure some fans are probably thinking, "You and I both, man. You and I both. But at least you get Diaspro's grudge...") Instead, Bloom and Sky are having a few words with the monarchs?
The ninjas argue over who's evil (one of them thinks that the king is working with Yoshinoya!). Bloom and Sky walk past as they're pointedly talking about troubles on Earth. So the ninjas decide to head to Earth. Sky asks if Bloom's not worried that they might cause trouble on Bloom's planet, and Bloom does seem a tinge worried. But for the most part, she's feeling smug with herself for being a better princess. The end.
Another random thought on the editing of the Musa/Stormy sequence. I can imagine the 4K people thinking that they could get away with not having Layla teach Musa about the rain dance, since a fairy of music probably should know dancing. But IMO, it works better with Layla teaching her. Your mileage may vary, though... especially when considering that the scene where Layla teaches Musa actually surfaces right after the fight in which she uses it. Talk about your screwed-up continuity there... (though I bet someone will say, "4K did an okay job hiding this by having Layla simply showing off her plan to dance instead")
