Apologies for the lack of Spotlight on Sunday. But I guess no one misses this feature, eh?
While I'm stil scratching my head that Bloom didn't use her Charmix in the Wildlands, even though she was the only Winx who had it for the whole vacation there, let's look at the editing situation. Mostly faithful, I see...
Trouble in Paradise
Volleyball. While the other Winx are playing, Layla is gathering firewood, while Stella is just sitting on a mat.
Unedited: The first thing Stella asks Layla is why she isn't playing... "It's right up your alley..."
Edited: The first thing Stella asks Layla is when they're going to the hotel.
Night time. Sky is guarding the tent while talking with Bloom.
Unedited: He exposits to the tone of, "There are noises out here, and it's too bad because it would have been romantic out here tonight." And he delivers it in a way that makes me think of his "We'd implode" line from 2x05.
Edited: He explains stuff about some animals guarding their mates through the night. Blech.
Layla finds out about the divorce of Stella's parents and later, Stella wants to talk with Layla.
Unedited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella says, "Give me a few minutes..." Bloom tells Layla about her parents' divorce. Later, Layla cries in the forest. Gist: "I didn't know that Stella's parents were divorced. I don't know anything about them at all!" Bloom is preparing the fashion show that Stella had suggested the day before, and is surprised that she herself won't be participating. As I remember, Stella invites Layla to participate in the show as well as part of her talk. Back at the beach, Bloom still thinks it's strange that Stella didn't participate in the show she had suggested.
Edited: Layla wants Stella to send a postcard to her parents. Stella says, "It's postcards Layla. My parents are separated." Bloom adds that it's been tough for her the last few years. Later, Layla cries in the forest. In a scene shorter than the original: "I guess I'm terrible at friendships." Later, Bloom is surprised that Stella doesn't want to do a makeover on Tecna, as Stella goes off to find Layla. Stella just wants to be friends with her. Back at the beach, they're talking about how Layla seems to hide her feelings all the time.
In either case, what Layla is lamenting makes no sense considering how good she is with Musa, and if anything, Stella is among those she HASN'T really bonded with. Not knowing about the divorce of her parents shouldn't be an issue (in fact, as I remember, that's pretty much what Stella says to her in the original). Heck, guys who tuned in during S2 wouldn't have known until now. So why's she being so hard on herself?
Unedited: Stella and Layla comment that the Charmix looks like a handheld mirror. Stella says, "My Charmix knows me well!" We get both a regular transformation followed by a Charmix transformation, and her attacks seem to be mirror-based.
Edited: There are no comments about the Charmix looking like a mirror, and Stella now says, "I totally got a Charmix!" We go into the Winx-to-Charmix transformation straight from her casuals, and the sequence is actually preceded by a proper transformation phrase ("Go Charmix!") (Meanwhile in the unedited, lately all transformation sequences have been preceded with "Magic Winx!" They've done this since S1, but they're consistent about it now. Personally, I think that while leaving out the convention of a transformation phrase makes Winx different, Winx doesn't have to be different about this convention.)
Last Resorts
The biggest edits in this episode both tie in to how they've changed why Tecna didn't like Timmy since 2x10.
The episode starts, and for no reason, the Specs are in their capes even though they were running around in their casuals for much of the last ep. Flora has an idea that would give Bloom her first Charmix transform (fly off and save themselves), but Bloom herself (foolishly, I say) shoots it down. (I guess the animators just don't like putting a transformation at the beginning of an episode... the one time this has happened, i.e., when the creds were still rolling, it was because 4K dropped a cut scene into the current episode. [Magic in My Heart, anyone?]) Now Timmy has a plan...
Unedited: We pan over to a pouty Tecna asking Digit "Given his past performance, what are the odds of that being true?!"
Edited: We briefly pan over to a pouty Tecna but immediately jumpcut to the explanation of this plan.
And now you know why Tecna looks pouty in that scene. :)
Speaking of pouty, Timmy is pouty for letting the Trix get away again.
Unedited: Tecna praises about how Timmy helped assemble the Specialists' plan together and stuff. And she then says, "I never liked not liking you!" Timmy tells her "Did you know that sentence sounded illogical?"
Edited: This is Tecna's quote directly from the dub... "I feel like I almost lost you today and it made me realize I've been mad at you 'cause you wouldn't make the first move, but really it's just me being scared of stepping up myself and telling you how much I absolutely adore you." Timmy tells her "You're crying but you're not sad... that's illogical."
As I have always maintained, I've always thought that "Tecna is mad because Timmy is a coward who doesn't do anything" was a better plot angle (despite all the illogicity of how it happens in the first place back in 2x10) than what 4K offers us. Are 4K trying to rub it in to Flora that waiting for Helia to make the first move (as her realm requires her to) is like waiting for a river to run dry? Also, it's a pretty awkward transition in the 4K version, when it just follows naturally in the original.
Somewhere in the middle...
Unedited: Layla walks into a fog bank. She collapses. Later, she gets up. She sees a picture of Piff and Anne. She walks into a cave on this. Fast forward to later. She eventually finds a hole in the cave roof shining into the pool. It's too high to climb, and she thinks of Musa... and then gets her Charmix, and flies out through the hole.
Edited: We just see Layla walking into the cave. Fast forward to later. She eventually finds a hole in the cave roof shining into the pool. Through the hole, she hears her friends, all of them crying for help, and she's determined to find a way out. She gets her Charmix, and flies out through the hole.
Also... the Trix have cornered Sky and Timmy.
Unedited: They decide to all attack at once, while saying what their powers are.
Edited: They say what their powers are, in a way that implies giving the Specs an option to pick one. (I bet someone will reply that this makes the witches look more badass.)
And don't you think it's weird that the fairy who's the main target of the Trix's plan doesn't get much screen time, and doesn't even break in her Charmix despite having had the most opportunity to do so (being the only one who had hers as they started vacationing in the Wildlands)? (Besides Flora's plan, she could have at least transformed just to fly down the cliff... I mean, Layla transformed just to get out of the cave.)

Date: 2006-10-07 04:19 pm (UTC)Not a romantic, huh? I thought that line was cute.
I wish we'd had the Charmix mirror bit left in. I like that.
I still like my T/T better. Much better dialogue in that scene. Again, you don't seem to be the romantic type at all. Never been on a date, huh?
(I bet someone will reply that this makes the witches look more badass.)
Well, it does.

Date: 2006-10-08 03:53 am (UTC)I guess the American line does sound cute, but it's the way Sky delivers the original line that makes "my" line cute. Given what he says you'd expect him to deliver the line a bit sadly, but nope.
Never been on a date, huh?
Bingo. But you gotta admit that cutting out Tecna's comment to Digit at the beginning makes the look on her face make no sense... I mean, in both summaries I've read, the summarizer wonders why Tecna is such a sourpuss about Timmy's plan. Where I live, it's pretty clear that she begrudges him for not taking the open shot at the Trix, just like how Lucy still begrudges Bloom for giving the Trix the dragonfire (2x17).
(I bet someone will reply that this makes the witches look more badass.)
Well, it does.
Figures.
