The Editor's Spotlight: Darkness and Light
Oct. 5th, 2006 06:33 pmThe Winx are back from their vacation. Let's see what's different about them now.
First, a random opinion. So the only being (pixie, Spec or fairy) who holds leading Icy to the pixie village and the Codex piece against Livy... is Livy herself. Everyone else seems to be willing to forgive her so easily (like the Winx did for Dark Bloom). Throw in some random beings who won't forgive her, for crying out loud...
Tecna and Bloom have their first Charmix transforms. And I still think it sounds off that the fairy who got her Charmix FIFTH is having her first transformation at the same time as the one who got hers first. This is during Avalon and Griz's exercise.
Unedited: They're fighting a monster. Griz reminds them they'll have to face LD eventually. Bloom positions the Winx in front of the monster to wait for her signal, and then they get attacked from the back. Musa then decides to bring on the Charmix.
Edited: They're fighting the monster. Griz tells them that they need to use their Charmix. Bloom agrees. But then they just stand there and get attacked from the back first. Okay, now it's Charmix time!
I know that some of you probably like the 4K cut for subverting the convention, but it just looks unnatural for me. It makes sense if they're waiting for a signal. Besides, I like the idea of Musa giving the Charmix call. Why would someone who has never used her Charmix before give the call, anyway?
Later...
Unedited: Griz is commending Stella, and the rest of the group on how they performed in this exam, and Francis comes in and calls them to FG's room.
Edited: Griz lays down parameters for their next exam (twice as tough, 3 minute time limit), and then Francis comes in.
I dunno... while it's good for them to keep training, Griz putting her hand on Stella's shoulder and the other girls smiling totally says "I'm commending you" rather than "here's what your next exam will be". (Yeah, I complain when the new dialog doesn't match what I see. I prefer Tecna yelling at Bloom over giving the Trix the ring without a fight, over Tecna yelling at Bloom over... bungling the mixing of a potion. Honestly! That's one of the reasons I didn't like the "potion" edit in 1x05, another being that you don't even see anyone doing anything potion-related.)
Besides, it's not every day you see Griz actually saying something nice to them. This is from the jerk who wouldn't let them explain why they went to CT, or (as a result) go to a concert that everyone else at Alfea was going to.
Over in the village... Flora has no idea what to do with the Tree of Life, especially since she has no Charmix.
Unedited: Jolly is giving Amore a reading. "The cards say that you're never going to get better."
Edited: Jolly's readings now say that she will never fall in love.
I just know there are some fans of irony who probably prefer this version, and they'd probably add, "Hey, I loved the song in Hallowinx, and I kinda like Chatta." But why give a reading about falling in love, when you're sick as a dog?
Things that should have been different:
1. Flora should have re-mentioned the "girls don't make the first move" rule (2x13) as why she won't tell Helia, instead of saying "I don't know if he feels the same way about me"... heck, they could have tied the two together.
2. There should have been some mention somewhere about the Truth Orb Tecna shot at Fake!Avalon (2x09). Not that it makes this plotline any less bull (because, why mention that a spell cast a half-season ago was performed wrong? It'd still reek of manure to me), but it would have been nice...
Random note: Except for Tecna saying "I've always been suspicious of Avalon", and the comment she made on her blog (which doesn't really count in the context of the show), Tecna isn't all "HA! I was right!" about hearing about Fake!Avalon. In any case, the show now owes her another starring role, and this time, she must end up looking good.

That's how leadership tends to work.

Date: 2006-10-08 02:58 am (UTC)I wasn't being mean on her... it's just that there weren't any pixies that were being mean to her for this. Of course, I just know you'll argue with, "But she did delay Icy obtaining the piece by giving it to Amentia, yes?" (True, but losing the piece in the end means that she should not be easily forgiven for letting Icy find the village in the first place.)
New!Pally, on the other hand, does deserve some flack for sending Livy back to the village without thinking twice (well, in the US version anyway).
That's how leadership tends to work.
Bloom got her Charmix first, but used hers fifth. That's leadership? I remember reading your recaps and being surprised that Bloom didn't use her Charmix first. But not using it at all in the Wildlands? On a scale of 1-10, that ranks about 6-7 on surprise. At the very least, she should have at least used her Charmix to fly down the cliff.

Date: 2006-10-12 03:50 am (UTC)I'm tempted to say: Leading the group in Charmix transformation despite not having used hers is pretty lame leadership.
All in all, they could have just had Bloom use her Charmix in the Wildlands, so we wouldn't be discussing why she doesn't. (And Lori, how would you rank, from 1-10, how surprising this was?)
This episode isn't all about Bloom's first Charmix transformation: there are a few other edits, and a few other notes to deal with. Incidentally, another edit I can think of. It's not much but...
Unedited: Flora says "I love you" to Helia.
Edited: Flora says "I really like you" to Helia.
I dunno... there's a huge difference "to like" and "to love" (how many plots have there been that a person would rather be loved than just liked?).

Date: 2006-10-12 04:16 am (UTC)I'd give Bloom not using her Charmix a solid 10 on the surprise factor.
Switching Flora's love to like makes the relationship a teense more realistic. Excellent change. To tell someone you barely know that you love them is false love. You can't love someone you don't know.

Date: 2006-10-12 04:50 am (UTC)I understand Bloom has led the others in transformation often and has often coordinated spell and such, but to lead the group into a transformation she herself has never done? If it's not lame, at least it's a bit "off".
I'd give Bloom not using her Charmix a solid 10 on the surprise factor.
Up there with The Living Cloud Tower?! Whoa. I guess you really did expect Bloom to be first (since Bloom did have her Charmix first)... I'm guessing, on the same scale, Bloom doesn't use her Charmix first is around a 6-7 for you.
I sure hope we get to see a lot of Charmix use for Bloom this season... she's well behind the others.
Wanna bet that Enchantix comes into play in ep 20 (like Charmix did)?
And I sure hope the pixies show up soon... I don't want them to go the same way as Knut, Pepe and Lady. Knut had a few scenes in S2, but no dialog. The others didn't even show! Okay, Amore and Digit were in 3x01, but I'd love to see more.

Wonder what you'd think of Flora taking the letter that had been destined for him anyway back from Helia in 2x13?

Date: 2006-10-12 02:10 pm (UTC)Chatta and Lockette were also present in 3:1.
And Flora taking the letter back is chickenshit. I so hate that so-called relationship.

Date: 2006-10-13 03:10 am (UTC)Bloom not using her Charmix first isn't the same as her not using it at all. I don't know if I'd have been surprised at all if she wasn't the first to use it. I would have appreciated someone else getting to go first. But for her to not use it at all, that IS damn surprising.
Because Bloom got it before they were in the Wildlands, yes? It still surprises me that Bloom is behind everyone else in Charmix use (she hasn't Charmix transformed on her own yet, while everyone else has).
Personally, I'm thinking that Bloom's non-use was an oversight by the writers rather than intended. You don't see any of the characters wondering why Bloom hasn't used hers yet... (And I'm wondering why none of the girls wonder why Musa, and not Tecna, gets the best grades.)
