Episode 5: Date with Disaster
In a case of Early Installment Weirdness, I tended to focus on the most important edits at first, and actually started at the end of the episode for this spotlight:

So, Bloom has just given Stella's ring to the witches. It's the morning after at the bridge.

Unedited: Tecna does not take Bloom's decision well at all.
Tecna: We could have beaten them... it was four-on-four.
Bloom: A battle could have made things worse. To me, the exchange was the best possible option bar none.
Tecna: But who are you to decide for all of us??? You're not the boss!!!
Flora: Tecna, I would have done the same thing.
(brief pause)
Bloom: They might have scored a goal, but the game isn't over yet.
Stella: What are you talking about???
Bloom: What??? You don't have soccer on your planets?
Flora: What's soccer???
Bloom: Come, I'll show you. It's a game you play with a ball. Let's take this for example (indicating can on ground).
Tecna: That's not a ball.
Stella: It's just an example, Tecna...
Bloom: Now... it goes like this. (grunts as she kicks the can)

Edited: Everyone defends Bloom's decision just fine (even though Tec thought it was a four-on-three battle), and Stella would have loved to have had some of that potion Bloom took the other night...
T: Then you might have known not to go out on a date???
B: Hey, you know what? Last night I almost forgot to mix in the mandrake beet. Who knows what would have happened???
T: No wait! You're supposed to mix in a mandrake root, not a beet!!!
F: Wait, she got the potion wrong? You know what this means???
B: I sure do Flora. This totally rules!!!
S: Bloom, what are you talking about???
B: I'm a natural good decision maker!
F: You didn't need the potion. Just thinking you took it gave you confidence.
B: You know girls? The witches may have scored a goal, but they haven't won the game.
T: What game?
S: It's an expression, Tecna...
B: Don't worry. (S: Huh?) We're gonna get that ring back! (kicks the soda can on the grass)

Actually, to do this bit justice, I'd have to go back all the way to the first scenes of the episode, in regards to the potion.

Unedited: Bloom and company are peeling potatoes.
Bloom: Ah, I hate doing kitchen duties. I just don't get it...
Musa: What is it that you don't get, Bloom?
Bloom (as Kiko peels and eats a whole potato :D): Why a school for fairies can't use magic to cook dinner? It doesn't make sense. (she throws off her apron and goes next to the door) All you've got to do is wave the magic wand, snap your fingers, wiggle your nose a couple of times and voila! Everything's ready without any effort.
(Master Sfoglia [the chef guy] barges in.)
Chef Guy: However, home-cooked meals taste a lot better, and are much healthier.
(Chef Guy then goes ahead and complains that Musa's taking off too much skin from the spuds for the side dish, and then tells them not to forget to flip the omelettes cooking on the stove right now. Yada yada yada. Egg on face!)
Chef Guy: I'll have a word with the headmistress about giving you a permanent exemption from kitchen duties! (wipes face) You young fairies cause more trouble than help! Now I must clean up before dinnertime, so keep an eye on the roast.
(Flora does this. Yada yada yada, Stella's date, blah. The roast is on fire, and everyone runs to the kitchen, where the Griz puts out the fire. Foam on face!)
Griz: Get back to work immediately, you hear me?! Dinner must not be delayed! Do your best, girls!
Bloom: Bread and cheese okay for you guys, hmm?
(Later that night, Flora and Bloom enter their room together, Flora goes to bed, and Kiko tucks her in. In the common area...)
Musa: Anyway, I wanna go out too, with or without a date.
Bloom (coming out of her room): Well... it certainly would be better if someone asked us out.
Tecna: I've not been programmed for dating.
Bloom: You should try it anyway. It's fun!
Tecna: What's fun about dating? It is an experience of irrelevant value!
Bloom: You've nothing to lose then!
Musa: Yeah, why don't you ask Timmy out?
Tecna (ignoring them): Good night girls, I'm going to switch myself off now!
(Bloom and Musa giggle, and then they yawn.)

Edited: Bloom and company are peeling potatoes.
B: You know what? I'll feel like a dork if this doesn't work.
M: Well, where'd you find the formula?
B (while Kiko eats the potato): It was in Vanity Fairy's new self improvement guide, so I mean, it should work. (she throws off her apron and goes next to the door) A thousand potatoes, a bushel of flipweed, a magic backflip, and you're making good decisions all the next day. It said good judgment is guaranteed.
(Maestro barges in, and complains about the Winx using the kitchen [the potions lab was signed out], the girls using his potatoes for their project, and complains about the omelettes [they were just making their own dinner]. Yada yada yada. Egg on face!)
(NB: Slight rearrangement in the montage of the girls flipping the omelettes)
Maestro: Normally I would find this funny, but as I am the one with egg on my face, I do not laugh. (wipes face) Now wrap this project up. You might want to be done by the time the headmistress gets here.
(Flora checks on roast flipweed. Blah blah blah, Stella's date, blah. Flipweed's on fire. The sequence of the girls running to the kitchen has two extra scenes. Griz puts out fire. Foam on face!)
Griz: Since you're having such a good time in the kitchen, you can spend the rest of the night here (pause) cooking dinner for the entire school!
(Musa: "She didn't say that while we're here...")
B: ...we couldn't still finish the potion, hmm?
(Insert scene of witches talking about their trap... hey, that's the Magix Convention Center [NB: from 1x12] they're at here! Back at Alfea... cut straight to the common area where Musa is)
M: And what is Riven's problem??? Why doesn't he ask me out like Sky did Stella? [T: Wot???] I'm just saying. Well???
B: I've taken the potion, and it should start working in the morning.
T: Musa wants to go out with Riven!
B: But she was so mega-rude last week!
T: Well, I did read that some boys will act rude simply because they are crushing.
B: Yeah, that could be it.
M: So you think I should call him???
B: Ask tomorrow, when her good judgment spell kicks in.
(Bloom and Musa giggle. Jump cut to the next day.)

All I'm going to say is: I understand why 4Kids removes things (for time, etc.). But what's with adding something to the plot which wasn't there before? (And surely someone would appreciate not knowing Stella was captured until Fake!Stella revealed herself...)

In slightly unrelated news, the girls have to question Fake!Sky about last night. Here's what they got:

Unedited: Fake!Sky was busy exercising until night
Edited: Fake!Sky was punished for the troll's escape last week

All I'm going to say is: As edited, it makes more sense to attach current events to previous ones.

Responses:

tanz_fanatika: Points to the edited for Tecna yelling at Bloom. Who made Bloom queen of the world anyway? Potion blah blah whatever. Bloom's just pompous.
Points to the unedited for not having Bloom look like an idiot about soccer. What kind of moron would be shocked that they'd have different sports in a magic realm?
"I'm a natural good decision maker!" No, you're not, Bloom. Just wait a few eps. I hated that potion.
(NB: To the point that she later cited it as one of the few edits she disliked in S1)
"However, home-cooked meals taste a lot better, and are much healthier." So magic's fattening, eh?
Hmm. I like the less stiff dialogue of the edited. The unedited is really stiff. But I like the subject matter of the unedited better.
Sky punished is way better than exercising. That's just kinda lame.
So a mixed bag. I prefer the unedited's leaving out of the dumb potion, but I like the non-soccer ending of the edited better. And I like the tone of the dialogue much better in the edited. The original is so serious! It doesn't need to be so.

beruche: I had forgotten about this episode! Looking back, I remember thinking that "I'm a natural good decision maker!" line set the stage for Bloom to be way too confident in herself.
People's lines are totally changed, I'll say that. For better or worse, it's a mixed bag. Foam in Griz's face scene wasn't changed, yay! I remember not liking her when I first saw that and clapping. ^_~ Still makes me laugh.
Do you think Bloom still considers herself a wonderful leader and decision maker? I mean, after the Day of the Royals and losing the Dragonfire, she got a rude slap up her butt, if you know what I mean.

(NB: There was quite a bit of tangential discussion about Bloom's confidence in her leadership in response to this post)

dreaming_faerie (another moderator): Fake!Sky was punished for... exercising until night? The edited version makes more sense.
Unedited Bloom makes herself out to be such a brat. Dang girl, shut up and peel those potatoes! She thinks so highly of herself. Edited Bloom is a bit more likeable.
Now, mind you that Winx Club is shown as a funny children's show, I think it's also trying to teach a lesson with some episodes. You know, the whole 'moral of the story and learn from this' episode sort of thing. It is aimed at young girls. Anyway, for this episode, it would be that you don't need a potion to help you make decisions but you have to believe in yourself to do it. You can't use stuff in magazines to help you, you just need the confidence.

Me: In the unedited, Fake!Sky was exercising that night.
In the edited, Fake!Sky was punished over the troll.
Just to clear things up.

And yet no one had any opinion about the 4Kids version giving out a blatant spoiler when we're supposed to find out the truth about Stella's date at the same time the Winx do :-\
I revisited the episode a couple spotlights later, adding another edit I'd originally missed, while also re-mentioning the troll mishap punishment in an attempt to show the mods, "See? I can praise 4Kids when they deserve it":

(Fake!)Stella asks Bloom where (Real!)Stella's ring is.

Unedited: Bloom tells Stella to calm down (paraphrase: "Calm down, I don't recognize you"). Instead, Fake!Stella just attacks her.

Edited: Bloom reminds Stella that she just gave it to her last night ("I don't have to tell you, I've got it. You gave it to me last night, you said keep an eye on it"). Fake!Stella then tries attacking her to get her to give her the ring.

This is to solve the gripe some of you have that Bloom tells Stella that she just gave her ring to her yet Fake!Stella still attacks her instead of telling Bloom just to give it to her. In other (old) news, color me amazed it's interesting that 4K mentions the troll mishap (is why Fake!Sky is grounded at RF) when the original doesn't. It's often been known to be the other way around.

I got one response about the ring issue:

frank15, who had actually cited this plothole in his review for this episode: The original looks like it handled the ring thing better. It didn't really make sense for Darcy, disguised as Stella, to attack Bloom upon finding out she had the ring, and Darcy's usually smarter than that. So yeah, original wins there.

However, despite only taking up two sentences of the re-visit, pointing out and trying to praise the edit regarding the troll mishap ended up just getting me into more trouble:

tanz_fanatika, firing off another warning shot against bashing 4Kids: Color me not amazed that you're 4Kids bashing again. LAY OFF IT. Consider this your first warning. It happens again, you're DONE.

Me, confused at how TF could see my praise as bashing: The only thing that might be remotely considered bashing is pointing out 4K mentioning the troll mishap when the original doesn't, and that it's usually vice versa. Otherwise, I'm definitely just pointing out the facts.

chrismactaggart: it was the way he worded something that could be construed as bashing - the "color me amazed" bit. Probably not the best choice of words given his past history of bashing the show on a different forum.

tanz_fanatika: It's not the pointing out of these things that's bashing. It's the "color me amazed" part. This gives the impression that you're shocked that 4Kids actually did something good. If those words were not there, I would not have called bashing. Stick with the facts and you're fine, but "color me amazed" is not part of the facts and cannot be seen as a positive thing. If you'd said "It's interesting that 4Kids mentions..." that would have been fine. But being "amazed" that they did something better is not.
(NB: Hence, the above strikeout/replacement :-\)

Other notable changes:
- During the class with WizGiz, the original version has WizGiz take out his talking pet mouse named Phil to scare a student, but in the 4Kids dub, he refers to the mouse as his Grandpa: "We'll find the antidote one day, Grandpa. I promise."
- 4Kids adds footage from other episodes and rolls Tecna using her "search engine" into the "searching for Stella" montage, turning it into a "music video" for their original insert song "Searching", and as a nice touch, dubs over a random passerby to say: "Well, there is a black-eyed pea, but that's a legume, not a lagoon." :-)
