1x09: Betrayed! / Spelled
How big is the REALLY big edit in "Spelled"? Well, the episode would have a different title without this edit.
Stella has been a bit snippy at Bloom and Musa today. As Musa runs on to the bus for Magix after being ticked off at Stella's comment about Riven, Stella (who was trying to follow) crashes into Bloom.
Unedited: I don't remember the exact dialog, but the gist is, Stella just doesn't know what's gotten into her today. Later, Flora elbows her in the RF plane as she starts going on and on about all the couples.
(NB: *checks Fandom* Bloom: Stella, will you tell me what happened? Stella: It's just that I can't do anything right today. Bloom: Uh, and that's news? Stella: Mmmm. Well I guess I do deserve to get some flak.)
Edited: The gist is now that Stella has been spellcast by the seniors for trying to give them fashion tips (somehow, Bloom figures the latter part herself :D). Later, Flora fixes her in the RF plane as she starts rambling on and on.
All I'm going to say is: what's with this edit?
Well, now that we've dealt with this big edit, it seems trivial to talk about these two, but, here you go...
Unedited: Bloom is transforming in her sleep, and Flora and Stella find it very weird.
Edited: Bloom is transforming in her sleep, and Flora refers to it as a sign that her powers are evolving.
Also, half of the scene is no longer there: Stella comes out of her room and walks over to Flora who's looking at Bloom, and while they're commenting, Stella starts to get pretty loud and wakes Bloom up from her sleep. I know... time constraints. (Also, the unedited version actually shows Bloom under her blanket in one shot, which is a nitpick, since we see her whole body transforming into her Winx form in close-up, in the very next shot. Score one for 4K I guess...)

Unedited: Musa encounters Icy at the cafe. Musa slaps her. Stormy even sees her fingerprints in the slap mark.
Edited: Musa encounters Icy at the Hex Cafe. Musa casts a wart on her. Stormy points at it. (The picture has been edited. Strange thing is, while you don't see Musa raising her hand, you still hear some sort of slap noise, and in the aftermath, you see Musa holding her hand in a slapping motion gesture.)
In both cases, we're never shown the actual act. We cut to a shot of a few witches in the cafe, before cutting back to the aftermath.
So, I guess slapping is a bit too much for US kids' TV now?

Michael "mg_winxclub" Grant: HELLO, slapping in cartoons and anime shown in the USA has ALWAYS been a no-no in censorships since animation began, and since you don't live in the USA, your ignorance shows. In every USA cartoon and anime shown in the USA, anytime there was a slap or a slap implied, it was never shown on the screen, you'd hear a noise but the camera would be looking elsewhere, such as someone's reaction or pointing to the sky, then the camera comes back to see the aftermath. Sometimes a character who's frozen in fear needs a slap to smack them back to their senses, but's never shown in the show, not even in Naruto on Toonami or Inuyasha on Adult Swim, for the latter we just see the red hand mark on the guy's face in the aftershot.
I like the USA version better on all the edits you've mentioned. Kids mimik what they see on TV, do you want them going around slapping people? Besides, Stormy has a great line and the spells used by Musa and Icy in that sequence fit the scene perfectly, so kudos to 4Kids for doing a great job on this part! *two thumbs up*
(NB: I actually added the note afterwards that we're not shown the actual slap in either version after getting this response... and there was quite a bit of a tangent about the slap, and slapping in general, in the discussion)
tanz_fanatika: I like Stella "spelled" better. She's got such a big mouth that she would get in trouble with the older students, who likely have more knowledge than her when it comes to spells. I love that they did this to get back at her. Her just being b!tchy for no reason is way more boring.
Don't see any big deal about the Bloom sleeping one.
And I like Musa spelling Icy better. Resorting to basic violence works for Stormy, but not really for Musa.

Do they even exist?" TF: "How do you know we haven't seen any? There are random girls about all the time.")

dreaming_faerie: Why make a big deal from a slap if its not shown? They just worked it out different in the edited. But really... you sound a bit condescending if you say slapping is 'too much.' It's one thing if it's shown, but it's not. I give the editors of the edited version credit for putting in something creative.
frank15: I don't know about that, but there doesn't seem to be any rules about slapping not being shown in the US, despite what Michael said. Each company can pretty much decide on a case by case basis whether or not to edit out a slap, or whatever.
Regardless, the wart spell is likely better, anyway.

On Daphne: Why would FG hide Daphne from Bloom? That's just stupid. The witch book is way better.
Me: True, but in either version, the Daphne search caused tons of mayhem in the library, and threatened to open the locked gate that barred the rare books section. I'm thinking that FG was doing this as some sort of safety measure...
Also in the library scene:
- The 4Kids dub has the search lectern ask Bloom for a search term, and when the gaggle of books shows up while she's reading up on Daphne, they're all chattering at her to "Read me", whereas the original version has them silent (I suspect TF would have thought that these leaned in to the fantasy setting like the restricted books from 1x06)
- In the original, Bloom's first query is Daphne, and she gets results on what Daphne means, while in 4Kids, her first query is Town Hall (where the facade of the nymphs is), and she gets information on upcoming events at Town Hall, like sorcerer soccer ("Not that goblin goalies don't sound interesting.") (ETA exactly one year later to the day: There's also a visual change for this: In the original, the book for her query has what looks like the Greek word for etymology on its cover, whereas in 4Kids it has been replaced with text saying "Magix Monthly")
And at the cafe:
- Icy's slap mark is visible for the rest of the scene in the original, and 4Kids of course erases the mark even after Icy gets rid of the wart
- Icy originally snaps to have a nearby witch fetch the others from the cafe; 4Kids has her do so to get rid of the wart
