The Editor's Spotlight: Miss Magix
Feb. 11th, 2023 06:46 pmTime for the episode with that very infamous afro scene...
1x12: Miss Magix
First, a pretty big edit. A whole scene gets edited out...
Unedited: We open in downtown Magix. Bloom and Fake!Brandon are at a cafe. Bloom talks about her search about Daphne, and notes that the library won't let Bloom search about her (at the end of Spelled, FG tells the librarian to deny her requests about Daphne). We then head over to Flora's exam.
Edited: We just open on Flora's exam. (Note that in both versions, we don't see the exam itself.)
Not a big one, but eh. One of the contestants is crying backstage.
Unedited: The Trix have made her hair gone apoof (if that's even a word).
Edited: The Trix have ruined her voice.
(NB: Ah, the very infamous scene that got this episode taken off of official online channels in 2020 :-\ 4Kids also got rid of Bloom touching the afro and finding that it's become gelatinous... And incidentally, I'd later find out that the Trix had nothing to do with the voice in the 4Kids version; more on that anon)
This edit was already mentioned when the ep premiered:
Unedited: Icy broke the illusion on Lucy, and then left her humiliated. (In fact, the Trix were discussing this point back stage.)
Edited: Bloom suspects something and uncovers the illusion on Lucy.
(In any case, somehow, the show never addresses how it is that the organizers aren't suspicious that something's going on.)
Later on, Stella takes her exam, and she's not doing well at all.
Unedited: Palladium hates to see his students fail, but he has no choice but to give her an F. As Stella sobs into Bloom's shirt, he tells her to study harder. Bloom tells her that for now, the future doesn't look so bleak: vacations are coming up. Yay!
Edited: Palladium lets the chamber grade her an A+. Bloom decides to celebrate with manicures and milkshakes. Yay!
(NB: Actually, they only say she passed; I suspect I must have gotten the A+ from Bloom doing the exam two eps ago)
tanz_fanatika: On the hair: I like it better that the Trix have messed with her voice, since her hair is awesome. The voice is a lot funnier, too.
On the illusion: On one hand, I like Bloom breaking the illusion, because it shows she can use her brain instead of just nagging. On the other hand, I like Icy doing it, because it displays her viciousness. Both are good.
I like Stella passing better.
(NB: A rare case of TF not fully agreeing with Frank, who wrote in his review: "Exactly how badly do you need to screw up to fail that exam, anyway?" Speaking of Frank...)
frank15: I definitely like Bloom breaking Lucy's illusion instead of Icy. Not that I have any problems with Icy's pure cruelty in the original, but that I just don't see Icy doing that, knowing full well that Stella would win if Lucy didn't. And as cruel as Icy may be, I would think that Icy would still rather let Lucy win than to have Stella win instead. Whereas Bloom, obviously, would rather Stella win. Aside from using her brain there to figure it out.
At ToonZone, someone else brought up Stella passing the exam (in a thread not specifically about Winx), and I tried to point that she does indeed fail in the original, and it seemed to pique that particular poster's interest: "What, what really happened? Because I'm a little confused. @ _ @ ." Michael "mg_winxclub" called me out as a 4Kids basher and added: "Just enjoy Winx Club the way it is. Almost all of us haven't seen the original Italian version and don't care what 4Kids has changed, just as long as we enjoy the series, that's what matters."
Later, I made a whole video about changes to Miss Magix and it was also here I found out that it wasn't the Trix who caused the voice problem. Here's our ensuing conversation:
Me, regarding the voice problem: At least the original shows how much the Trix will do to ensure a Lucy win, even if only to take it away from her immediately. Fro screwing up on her own, I just don't buy.
(NB: Yeah, not one of my best arguments :-\)
tanz_fanatika: I like the cut clip, but *insert my usual line about cuts being a necessity in the US of A*
(NB: The above references the opening cafe scene)
The Trix screw with Lucy for no real reason is much less realistic than them helping Lucy to screw with Stella.
I like Stormy's "miracle" line. (NB: "She doesn't need US to win... she needs a MIRACLE.") In both versions, Darcy's "brilliant" line is OOC for her. She's not that much of a suck up. Stormy's line in the uncut should be Darcy's and Darcy's should be Stormy's, though Stormy's line in the 4Kids version is more fitting to Stormy.
I like our version of the afro scene much better. It's kinda insulting and maybe even racist in the uncut.
Why do you have such an issue with people messing up? Is it so unbelievable that a fairy cast a spell wrong, especially when she's already nervous? People screw up on an hourly basis. It's not unrealistic at all.
Me: Which seems more entertaining? Some random fairy making a random screw-up, or some random fairy getting victimized by the Trix backstage, as a curtain raiser to the mayhem that will occur later? I say the latter.
tanz_fanatika: Freaking about an afro is insulting to all people with afros, most of whom are black. Also, it's a symbol of the black power movement, so the girl being so devastated by it could be considered racist because she's obviously against something that's rather signature to black people. Racism is a very sticky issue in my country.
(NB: Yeah, no kidding)
I actually prefer the fairy messing up. By far. The Trix are always after people. At least a fairy screwing herself over is different! Repetition is not entertaining for me, so I appreciate difference. Icy's comment could also be considered the straw that broke the camel's back, thus cementing the elimination of that girl, so the Trix were still active in her downfall.
(NB: Quite the reach there, but still, not one of my best arguments :-\)
There were also a few visual edits of note: Stormy's panties (a very famous one in the fandom), and a contestant's two-piece bathing suit being painted over into a dress. I posted about the latter at a different forum, and one user replied: "I don't understand the whole redrawing of outfits to make the more "appropriate". How is a bikini not appropriate compared to the outfits that the girls wear in the first place? Plus it's just realistic that bikinis are worn by most women today."
