1x18: The Font of Dragonfire / Senior Witches Go to Earth
While Bloom's on Earth licking her wounds, we see what's happening at Alfea...
Unedited: FG calls the other Winx in because she was never told that Bloom left.
Edited: FG is denying the other Winx permission to go get Bloom because they were slapped with dilution last week.
(NB: I definitely did not express this alteration well, as you'll see in the replies)
So the Trix have beaten up Bloom, and Icy tells her exactly what she meant a few weeks ago when she said that she had something she wanted. Cue her story.
Unedited: Daphne is revealed to be Bloom's sister.
Edited: Daphne is revealed to be... the guardian of the DF.
(NB: And 4Kids also cuts out Bloom's moment of realization when Icy mentions Bloom's sister)
Yeesh. Now we get the impression that some random nymph is taking care of Bloom, rather than her sister. By the time Bloom reads her family tree (NB: in 2x09), it's no longer the big deal it should be.
Oh yeah, the unedited also has a nice (if unimportant) scene of Mitzi trying to explain to some other people what happened to her scooter.
Responses:
dreaming_faerie, about Daphne being changed from her sister to just a random nymph: Yeesh? Is that so bad? Sailor Moon was taken care of by Luna and Luna wasn't part of the family.
(NB: Well, I always thought having Daphne be Bloom's sister added something to the story, and Thomas Vacarro has suggested in his video about 4Kids changes that, combined with other changed aspects of this plot turn, it would have added some more drama)
TF: On the first issue, I prefer the edited, because at least the girls are showing some interest in going to help. In the unedited, it sounds like they could care less. "Yeah, Bloom's gone. Oh, didn't we tell you, Miss FG? It's because we aren't worried about her in the least. We're such awesome friends."
I think guardian characters are quite often not related to who they're watching over. They lose some mysticism if the main chick is always like "Oh, yeah, that's my guardian sister. She's glowy." I don't think it's the monster deal you seem to be trying to make it.
I would have liked to have seen the Mitzi bit, but cuts are necessary, so I can see why it fell. Probably would have broken up the dramatic mood.
Me: They were thinking that Bloom would probably change her mind and come back. Musa yells at FG after FG says something like "You didn't try to stop her?" Something to the tone of "Of course we did. We're her friends!"
(NB: *checks Fandom for actual lines* Faragonda: What were you thinking? You are Bloom's best friends and you allowed her to leave without trying to stop her? Musa: That is not true!)
4Kids loses the brief painterly flashback to the previous episode at the start of this ep, followed by the first few shots immediately after the flashback (in which Bloom announces she's leaving Alfea and the other girls react to the announcement) as well as Bloom imagining her friends hanging out at various locations in Magix city, and also makes a visual alteration to a shot of an alley before Bloom returns home (so now it's a "Transportus Station")... before also cutting out a shot of Bloom crying (yes, even moments of genuine emotion were not safe under 4Kids)
Also, whereas in the original, the girls try to appeal to her unfinished business at Alfea ("Your powers are amazing, Bloom, don't waste them." "What about your origins? And the secret of Daphne the Nymph?") in 4Kids they mainly try to appeal to their friendship with lines like "All for one and one for all. That's the way we roll" and "Do you know how low the probability of finding a friend has amazing as you is like?"
