2x12: Win-X Together! / Truth or Dare
Truth or Dare. What does that anything have to do with the main storyline? Awful title IMO.
Unedited: Jared arrives to go out with Musa. Jared tells Musa that he wants to talk with someone who's been through the simulator for an article he's writing. After they return, Stella asks Musa about every single detail of the date, and the guy. Bloom thinks she's being too nosy.
Edited: Jared arrives to go out with Musa. Jared tells Musa that Stella set him up with her. After they return, Stella asks Musa what she thinks about her matchmaking. Bloom thinks she's being too nosy.
(NB: Also, the 4Kids dub adds a line explicitly saying that Jared is taking the Musa photo from Riven's room instead of his own as suggested by the original)
I personally don't like this edit. The original shows how Stella is the resident gossipmonger, while the new version makes her seem even nosier than in the original. (I'm also still indifferent, at best, about Stella getting "Spelled".)
(Unedited: The witches are out to get even with the Winx for foiling the plan in "Homesick", and probably to prevent them from getting any stronger.)
(NB: In the edited, the Trix are doing this because it's Darcy's birthday today)
Convergence homework. Bloom and Stella are the surprise package of the day, since they don't have a project ready, when they should easily have done the best on it.
Unedited: B/S couldn't figure it out, and Bloom ends with saying, "Fire and light are similar in more ways than one." (so as to say, "So, how come we don't even have a project like the very different Flora and Tecna do?") FG explains that they have to understand their powers first. In short, Bloom's powers are the Flame of Life (thereby explaining her healing powers in the last two episodes). Stella's powers are the Light of Vision (light that bursts forth to enlight so others can understand). This ties in later to how Bloom gives their Pinko life in the sim exam, and Stella gives it eyesight.
Edited: B/S said that they were trying to converge their powers and then they got into a fight on how. (Kinda like 2x18, minus the explosion, minus the other fairies.) FG explains that they need to have perfect harmony blah blah blah.
Imagines tanz_fanatika typing, "So, Bloom and Stella can't figure out how to converge? With no rhyme or reason? Even though they have similar powers? Even thought they're best friends? At least throw a good reason in there somewhere. I'm still complaining about the ending of Magical Reality Check!"
(NB: Yeah, I was probably trying to project my attitudes on TF a bit too much there :-\)
Later, they're at the sim chamber.
Unedited: Stella is sure about succeeding in tomorrow's exam: "The five of us will make a megablast." However, there are six of them there. Layla is offended, and crying. Musa is mad that Stella implicitly left her out.
Edited: Stella cheerily proposes a slumber party, but Layla is offended, and crying. Musa doesn't understand why, but she's mad at Stella all the same. Stella doesn't understand either.
This is probably the kind of edit where neither version is fully satisfactory for tanz_fanatika (like the "Darcy walks past Musa" scene in 2x08). On the one hand, Stella shouldn't be that stupid to forget that there are six of them and not five like last year. On the other, suddenly it doesn't make sense for Layla to run off like that.
(BTW, in the next scene, Layla offers to teach Musa how to dance: "You'll learn in two seconds flat!")
(NB: Frank wrote in his review: "Musa's being upset is understandable, since no matter what Stella did, Musa's just going to be ticked off with her. Stella's comment didn't seem to warrant Layla's reaction, though. Then again, Layla's been on edge, and thinking about past friendships isn't helping. ... I put no blame on Stella for the "Layla running off" incident." )
Minor but what the heck? Slumber party!
Unedited: Stella has a flashback to 5th grade, when she had a crush on the most handsome prince at school, and when his girlfriend broke her leg, she was hoping that he'd dance with her at the prom instead. (Judging from the fact that anyone who's anyone dances at the prom, I don't blame her.) Instead, he was caring for her broken leg instead. After the hacking, Stella briefly discusses Riven with Musa ("I don't think that Riven would ever be interested in a tomboy like me" "Judging from the way he looks at you, or doesn't, he is"), followed by a nice scene of Layla dressed up as a warrior.
Edited: Stella has a flashback to 5th grade, when she had a crush on the most handsome prince at school, and she cast a spell to break his girlfriend's leg (she was meaning to give her acne). She was hoping that he'd dance with him at the prom instead. (And anyone who's anyone dances at the prom.) Instead, he was caring for her broken leg instead. Scene (and current segment) ends with hacking.
(NB: Turns out 4Kids also includes Stella's discussion with Musa after the hacking [and one of the Winx briefly singing Alfea's school song, last heard in 1x02], but 4Kids omits the Layla dress-up bit)
(And later during the exam, New!Pally fears that cutting power to the crystals in the sim would result in backlash that would cause them to lose their powers. Imagines tanz_fanatika: "I like the danger of disappearing altogether. It ties in to Sky mentioning, in Magical Reality Check, the rumor of the girl who disappeared in the chamber, it creates more danger, and besides, losing their powers would be nothing new under the sun [eyes Grounded].")
TF:
Annoying as it is, I can see Stella matchmaking. She's Stella, for F's sake. I still don't like it, but she'd totally do it.
(NB: Another "She would do this" excuse for justifying a 4Kids change :-\ Well, she would be nosy too, so why not just leave it alone?)
I like the added power description for Bloom and Stella in the unedited.
I've discussed the Stella screws up scene enough. Not repeating myself.
(NB: TF discussed this scene in a different post, and I don't fully remember how TF reacted... but if I had to guess, I suspect TF would have thought that Layla had been around long enough for Stella not to accidentally exclude her in the count, and given Layla the benefit of the doubt that she would be intimidated rather than excited at having friends to share stories with, given that she didn't have friends growing up)
(On the latter mock TF quote about the chamber) Yeah, that sounds like what I'd say. Lose your powers, lose your powers. Why is it so easy to lose your d@mn powers? Lame.
Me, re the added power description: True, but on the flipside, TF wrote in email that it also "makes them sound like dumb@sses and dumb@sses don't figure out how to converge after a mere slumber party." As I imagined TF writing, "At least throw a good reason in there somewhere."
Another edit not originally mentioned comes during the exam, when Jared has been found after hacking the simulator:
Unedited: Jared gets captured with rope.
Edited: Jared gets captured with some sort of magical hoop. (It should be noted that on the original broadcast, 4Kids forgot to replace the rope in one shot. It was corrected for reruns and the DVD, though.)
