End of the line for the Editor's Spotlight (or is it? Details after the cut)
2x26: The Phoenix Revealed / The Ultimate Power Couple
Besides the huge nitpick of smartypants Flora and Musa doing pretty well in Shadowhaunt (when in an earlier episode, it was shown their powers would not work here), and no one getting their powers drained (which was quite a problem in said earlier episode), a few more edits.
(NB: Called them smartypants in acknowledgement of them being mentioned as getting the best grades in 1x15)
Tecna deals with monsters with her Charmix alone (the others want to conserve their Charmix to fight LD, at least in the original), and de-Charmixes.
Unedited: After the Specs catch up with Tecna, both Tecna and Timmy say they're going to track the others. Helia says there's no need, and points a paper crane, which flies off for the Specs to follow.
Edited: Helia now comments on Tecna and Timmy saying the same thing at the same time, and the shot of the flying paper crane is cut out.
(NB: In the original, Tecna is the only one saying "Huh?" in reaction to Helia, but in 4Kids, the picture has been edited so that Tecna and Timmy both say "Huh?" just so Helia's new line makes sense)
(NB2: Also, the original sets up the reveal of the paper crane by having Flora say "I've gotten very good at passing on messages to Helia." 4Kids also cuts that part out)
Heeeere's Concorda! And remember those jewels?
Unedited: According to the Elders, FG told them to make back-ups of the Codex pieces, and they're the jewelry they're holding right now. Layla sees the puzzle and considers which of the other remaining fairies could solve the puzzle. "Maybe I should get Tecna and her computer, or maybe Musa, she's good at puzzles, or Flora..." As she's considering, Stella says, "Are these colors off or what?" and rearranges the pieces. "It's just that the colors were clashing, so I moved them around a little bit and..." It turns out to be the solution to the puzzle: Athena: "It's a complex color spectrum analysis problem. No one's ever solved it so fast before." Stel: "See? Fashion sense is a vital skill after all! :)"
Edited: The jewels are referred to as ancient artifacts. Layla sees the puzzle, and Stella brings up a field trip to a museum, and there's something about a civilization that communicated with colors. She rearranges the pieces into the solution: "Stella is quite fluent in hue..." "Maybe Palladium should reconsider my grade :)"
The only part that makes 100% sense in either version is, yes, Stella loves fashion, so she should know what colors go with what. But when I read about this for the edited version, it felt like an @ sspull to me, because the whole discussion about the field trip just came up out of nowhere. Now, I'm betting someone will say something about how the original version is even more of an @ sspull, since Stella essentially just stumbled on the solution. (And I would agree, but at least they don't pretend that Stella knows what's she's doing...)
(NB: More on that anon)
And I'm still of the opinion that the target audience wouldn't have remembered the jewels from WAAAAAAY back, without the flashback in 2x20.
(NB: When this ep first aired in the US, 2x07, the episode with the jewels, had last aired more than two months before [and 4Kids skipped the flashback to the scene in 2x20], so in discussion about this plot-point, I wrote: "How many viewers (in the target audience) will still remember about them by now? I know that many animation companies underestimate their viewers, but this may be a bit OVERestimating the viewers." TF said: "Honestly, I don't think the target audience is as picky about details as we are. They probably wouldn't even wonder where the pieces came from because they'd be too busy wondering if the fairies were going to save Bloom, etc.")
Speaking of flashbacks...
Unedited: There is a brief flashback to last season's finale during the Realix scene.
Edited: There ISN'T. Doesn't that kinda defeat the point of the scene?
(NB: There's also a minor tweak on Dark Bloom's face as Sky collapses)
Last edit of the season!
Edited: The last shot of the season is Bloom and Sky running in front of Timmy's camera as it goes off.
Unedited: This goes on with Blinky hovering in front of the camera, and then Mirta and Lucy being dragged in front of the camera.
(NB: Just before that edit, two beverage alterations:
- Griffin is sticking around for the dance party this year, and the liquid that she and FG are drinking in long stemmed glasses has been changed from pink in the original to blue in 4Kids
- Chatta drags over a cup of cappuccino for Piff to drink in the original. In 4Kids it's a cocoa, and when Piff says "Cocoa!" Chatta adds that it's her first word. Not really true, but she was still in Darkar's cell when Piff said "Bye-bye Layla!" (In both cases, Piff was making her usual noises in the original))

TF: On your b!tching about Stella's knowledge: Oh, come on. An entire YEAR goes by in these season. Do you really expect them to talk about EVERY class and EVERY trip? Don't be stupid. I love Stella actually applying knowledge. It's way better than her F'ing around.
And once again, you're b!tching about necessary cuts. You're a jerk, you know that?
Me: On your b!tching about Stella's knowledge: (...)
You got a point, but still, couldn't they have come up with a more relevant precedence to Stella solving the puzzle than Stella knows her fashion? Like, Stella likes to do color puzzles.
As alluded to above, when the 4Kids version came out, I thought Stella pulled the solution out of her behind... Here's how TF responded:
TF: Stella didn't pull anything out of her anything. She has a knowledge of colors and patterns, so it was easy for her to piece the puzzle together, based on her skills and what she learned about the civilization that spoke with hue and pattern. She used her brain and her talent, not luck.
Me: Except that we never actually saw her learn about the color pattern civilization, so she pretty much brings it up out of left field.
TF: That's totally different than pulling it out of her rear though. Pulling it out of her rear would be if she just stumbled into the solution by luck or totally made it up on the spot. Instead, she's using knowledge we just never saw her acquire. We never saw any of the characters learn to speak, yet their talking isn't pulling anything out of their butts. There's a big difference.
I felt that the real issue wasn't that we didn't see her acquire this knowledge, it's that we didn't know that she even had this knowledge until literally just now...
Me: But we'd take talking for granted. Given Stella just brought up the color pattern civvie now, it might as well be making it up on the spot.
TF: Why can't you just let Stella have done something smart without questioning it? The fairies seem to know an awful lot that we don't see them learning. I think it's cool that Stella got to use some knowledge that the other fairies didn't possess. This is exactly why I have issues with you.
Don't get me wrong, Stella did something cool here no doubt, it's just that I still think that the original handled it more gracefully, because Stella's existing "knowledge of colors and patterns" felt like a good enough reason for her to piece the puzzle together, even if one could argue that she essentially "stumbled into the solution by luck":
- Stella getting to use some knowledge that the other fairies didn't possess: Good :-)
- Having that knowledge being something that comes naturally with fashion sense: Also good :-)
- Having that knowledge being something we only learn now that she got on a field trip that we also only learn now that she took: Not so much :-\
It just seems more convoluted how Stella knows to solve the puzzle in 4Kids, yet TF insisted that the fact we don't see her acquire that all-important knowledge was less of a sticking point than just having her noticing the clashing colors, which one could argue still plays into her fashion talents :-\
TF would comment in a later summary that mentioned this plot point in comparison to another 4K change: "I still don't get your beef with the field trip. Why can't they have done some things off screen? Is that so problematic? We don't see them going to the bathroom, do we? We don't see them sleeping most of the time, do we? Or eating? So why can't they have classes off screen? Because gods know, we barely see them in class and it's a school. It's only logical that they attend classes even if you don't see it happening. DEAL."
Unless it's important to the plot, I can understand skipping bathroom breaks, sleeping, eating, and even most classes... but the keyword here is "unless it's important to the plot" :-\
This marks the end of my original set of posts, but after another hiatus, we're going on beyondzebraDarkar, and exploring the final 4Kids season's edits :-)
