spiderbraids3x03: The Fairy and the Beast / Pretty Pretty Princess
Unedited: The last minute or so of the previous episode (starting with Brandon and Sky running back to their ship) is repeated at the start.
Edited: 4K starts on Bloom running after Stella.
Bloom sees the guards going after Brandon and Sky.
Unedited: Tecna tells Bloom that the guys can handle them on their own.
Edited: Tecna makes a point that the rain has sapped all their Winx and the guys can handle it.
This creates a whole lot of problems in the tunnel, such as Tecna having power (albeit very minimal) while the others don't when they encounter the spiders, and deciding to make an air bubble to breathe underwater. (I remember trying to justify the Tecna stuff with her unique outfit, but once again, it would have been easier not to make changes)
Unedited: While walking in the forest looking for Stella's tunnel, Musa asks Stella if they need a spell to see it.
Edited: Stella says "If Brandon saw me like this, as good as a guy he is, you can bet he'd be gone faster than a Solarian sunbeam." Flora: "That's not true. Brandon's not like that" Musa: "All guys are, Flo. It's just their nature."
Later while going through the tunnel, Stella gets stuck, prompting Musa to make this comment:
Unedited: "It's Stella. She can't get through. We've got to help her. C'mon!"
Edited: "Narrow passageway, plus-sized fairy, not good."
These two comments from Musa received a good deal of criticism.
Unedited: We have a scene on the Specialists' plane, with Bloom telling Sky she needs to contact Alfea and Stella hiding herself from Brandon.
Edited: We only see the plane coming to Alfea.
The Winx find out about The Mirror of Truth, and Stella asks Concorda if it will work:
Unedited: "Yes dear. But it will be a dangerous journey. The mirror is guarded by white giants and other sentries. They won't be easy to get past."
Edited: "We can't be sure of anything Stella. High magic objects only work when they are putting the universe back into balance."
Regarding the changes to Musa's dialog, I felt that surely she wouldn't have been so callous in the original, and when I found that I was right, I had some email correspondence with TF, but whereas I argued that the original dialog vindicated Musa, TF refused to discount the Musa incident, despite it not happening in the original version, making the following claims:
"As far as I'm concerned, there are multiple personalities for these characters. There isn't only one way for each to be, since there are at least three distinct versions of the show (4Kids, English dub, original Italian). And yes, I'm sure there are actually enough differences between the English dub and the Italian to merit different personas. There probably are other ways the characters behave when dubbed into other languages, too. So I judge by the version I've seen.
I honestly like all the girls. Musa continually draws me to her, despite these glaring issues. The man-hating and fat joke were pretty much stupid writing, not really indicative of her character. But they did happen, so I can't discount them from my list."
There's also the matter of Flora spelling Brandon to see Stella as pretty (which does happen in the original as well, BTW), and in discussion someone noted that Brandon looked perfectly normal and asked, "Well, wouldn't we have seen some visual cue that Brandon was spelled?" TF responded, with a rare acknowledgement of 4Kids edits: "Why would there have to be a visual cue? I would say that would only be appropriate if we saw the spell performed, but we didn't. Plenty of spells don't leave any visual marker. Actually, most of them leave no marker. Stella and Riven are both spelled in season one and neither shows any visual indication of this. Granted, Stella's wasn't in the original version, but Riven's certainly was. Jared in season two is another example. I don't believe he had any visual sign of his spelling by Darcy. There won't always be some sign hanging over a character that says "Spelled" and has a big arrow pointing to their head."
