The Editor's Spotlight: The Black Willow's Tears / Tears of the Black Willow

3x12: The Black Willow's Tears / Tears of the Black Willow

Okay, now moving on to 3x12. After we have a name change for Flora's sister from Miele (Honey) to Rose, the girls meet the Sage of Linphea at the waterfall, who tells them about the Black Willow. The most important change involves about getting the water from the stream:

Unedited: They're specifically told to use a goblet to get the water from the stream.
Edited: They're told in more uncertain terms that they must get the water without touching it.

Darcy pollutes the stream, and Miele/Rose gets zapped. I imagine there are probably some people out there who prefer Flora's more dramatic line in the unedited as she casts the spell on the Trix...

Unedited: "Venus Gobbler!"
Edited: "That was my sister!"

After Flora rescues her sis, a major ordering change takes place here, and it fixes a plot hole rather than create one:

Unedited: We see a tear drip into the polluted stream, causing the stream to suddenly become clean again, and causing Flora to transform into Enchantix, before emerging from the clean stream. Flora uses her fairy dust to make the willow throw the Trix into the stream.
Edited: We see Flora transform into Enchantix and emerge from the still-polluted stream. We see Flora use her fairy dust (just the "drawing" part, without the actual drawing), and 4K puts in the clips that originally immediately precede and follow Flora's transformation to present it as if Flora's dust has purified the stream, before making the willow throw the Trix.

Responses:

mightymarty2: I think this one 4kids is a lot better, which is unusual as its normally very close
Abby: I agree with marty, it makes more sense for her fairy dust to fix the river than to just throw the trix in.

When I wrote my summary, TF said of the translation of Miele's original name: "Honey. *snort* That's a str!pper or p0rn star name. Good change, 4Kids. Good change." As if names could carry the same connotation across languages and translation :-\

Also:
Unedited: The Sage of Lynphea actually explicitly tells them "You need a goblet to collect the willow's tears."
Edited: She's more cryptic that they need to figure out how to get the water without touching it.
(This was the change I thought was better than having Stella mention a field trip "out of nowhere", because Stella figures out the riddle)

When this episode originally came out, I noted that when Flora uses her fairy dust, 4Kids appeared to have erased the drawing, and (in light of 4Kids head honcho Alfred Kahn once saying that kids don't read) I quipped to TF in email "So 4Kids hates drawing now? ;-)" I added that winky-wink to make it clear I wasn't seriously bashing 4K, but TF thought my little joke wasn't funny, and also nitpicked my comment that in the original version of 3x13, Flora uses her fairy dust without making the drawing, and was like "I don't know why 4Kids used that version instead, but 4Kids did not erase it, so there" (as if that makes a difference :-\)
That said, 4Kids cuts short the sequence, so maybe they thought showing the drawing might have made the cut more obvious :-\
