Ep 5
- This week's leg is in Santiago, and by the time I'm tuning in, firefighters Sunny/Bizzy are in last place, picking up a clue at some place with classic cars (apparently, teams were looking for Marilyn Monroe's T-Bird), while couple Rod/Leticia are so lost driving to the Detour they're driving into the mountains (!!) Meanwhile, with teams that are actually doing tasks, the Roadblock is titled "Who's feeling board?" which involves assembling a skateboard, and once again, Karishma takes the task anticipating it to be a different aspect of the task, rather than one for which her cousin-teammate Kishiori is more suited :-\ (former likes riding skateboards, latter knows how to assemble Ikea furniture)
- This week, the Roadblock precedes the Detour, which is between Perform for Pesos (busking for 2500 Chile Pesos, with one contestant wearing a distinctive back-mounted bass drum and the other doing maracas) and Climbing for Clues (with both climbing some sort of tower individually, covered with rock climbing wall holds, to grab a race-colored ribbon) In the former, boyfriends Ricky/Cesar compare the way they have to play the drum to chicken clucking, while Vinny has to (figuratively!) handhold his GF Amber through the climbing task... Meanwhile, while S/B are making their way to the Roadblock, one's like "Remember the days when we didn't have GPS and had to have someone draw a map?"... and the other one be like "No" :-)
- After a roadside break to check directions, and a confessional in which Rod mentions he's an American football player (okay, it will have been revealed since ep 1, and whereas other reality shows probably would have done beaten us over the head with that [even earlier seasons of this one, see Globetrotters and cowboys Jet/Cord], this show has shown restraint), Rod/Leti finally arrive at the drum Detour, and it seems they're still fighting a bit, as Rod initially takes the drum, and winds up criticizing Leti for not actively trying to busk for money, seeming half-heartedly asking for it, to the point where they switch, with Rod taking the maracas himself and having Leti do the drumming... then criticizing Leti for not shaking her hips :-\
- Pitstop is at Estacion Mapocho, a train station turned cultural centre, where Phil Keoghan is waiting with a skateboarder kid :-) and it's coming down to fighter pilots Juan/Shane (climbing) and Ricky/Cesar finding a nearby parking space... R/C end up in first and the show barely lets the team placement graphic play out as Phil's explaining the prize, which this week is 5 nights in Singapore from Expedia (Local dining! Reef diving! Private cultural tours!) Phil quips that maybe R/C should take it easy on the other teams, but they'd like to get all the prizes :-) (Incidentally, turns out that Expedia is actually the owner of Travelocity, the show's previous prize trips sponsor, so it wasn't as big of a switch as I'd thought)
- S/B arrive at the RB, as they quip "Everyone loves a good comeback story" (like last week :-)) and S/B are competing with retired grandparents Derek/Shelisa and K/K... Walla Walla parent-child Angie/Danny finish in 4th, and they were apparently in first in the early going (they were already in 4th as I was tuning in), as they compare finishing in 4th after their early start like having a bully pull a lolly out of their mouth... After all that getting lost, somehow Rod/Leti manage to finish in 5th (!) Asked to compare the race to the Super Bowl, Rod calls the race bigger than the Super Bowl, calling it the Super Bowl of life :-)
- Derek/Shelisa get their clue in 7th... and while Karishma's struggling with the bolts (incidentally, she doesn't know the difference between bolts and nuts) S/B manage to finish before K/K (!) prompting her to call it a deja vu of Colombia (Karishma's wearing her hair in S5-6 Musa-like twintails, and she even uses the term "bounce" referring to them leaving LOL!) After a few more pitstop checkins, S/B are arriving at the Detour, and they've picked climbing because of their upper body strength, though one of them has to take two goes to get their clue, and Derek/Shelisa, despite their age, are also climbing :-)
- S/B arrive at the pitstop and are incredulous at their 7th place finish, which leaves Derek/Shelisa and K/K (also both climbing), with D/S finishing the climbing before K/K... and eventually finishing before K/K, where Shelisa brags that she didn't curse in spite of everything (whereas Derek did cuss quite a bit)
- And as K/K get elimmed and walk off into the figurative sunset, the clock on my TV read 10:51, even though the next show was supposed to start at 11:05, and previous weeks the show ended at roughly 11:00... After a few minutes of dad watching some news program, I switched back over to the channel a couple times to see why they ended about 10 minutes early, and I found them airing an extended clip from "Whacked Out Sports" of dudes jumping into a pond, with a narrator sarcastically reading a pharma-ad-style disclaimer over the clip, followed by dudes parachuting off buildings, with more sarcastic narration :-\
Ep 6
- This week's a megaleg, which would normally be spread out over two eps, but this season TAR just crammed two eps' worth of stuff into 90 minutes, so most of this recap will focus on "part 2" :-) Anyways, we're in Cordoba, Argentina, and the first Detour is between bikes and a throwing weapon known as bolas, which apparently tripped up Derek/Shelisa so badly that they switched to bikes, and they're already well in last arriving at the first Roadblock, called "Who's got a good sense of direction?" :-\ By the 45 minute mark, Derek/Shelisa are the only team still on the first half of the leg, where Derek is busy with the Roadblock, which involves riding in a rally car and working on a puzzle of the racecourse (not at the same time obviously :-)) Derek needs at least two rides for this, and when Derek's eventually done with it, Shelisa seems frustrated that it took him so long :-\
- Over in the second half, we have a Roadblock called "Who's ready to score?" It's a soccer version of the Running with the Bullz Detour from a decade ago (!), where contestants get bumped around by other dudes in balloon outfits (Angie finds it especially brutal) and play for a couple minutes at a time until they score a goal (with an oversized ball LOL)... There's room for two teams to play at once, and of course there's always at least one team that leans into the double entendre, and in this case it's S/B :-)
- There's a Detour between "Who Did It" and "What's Your Meat", but all of the teams (that get to do it, more anon) go with the latter, involving memorizing cuts of beef en español as explained by a butcher in his store, and matching the pieces to the text on a table in a nearby patio... Juan/Shane are competing with Ricky/Cesar for first (and one of the boyfriends is a chef :-), though the pilots quip about potentially being smoked :-D), while all the other teams bar Derek/Shelisa are jockeying for 3rd to 7th (!)
- Juan/Shane manage to get the meat done first, then manage to beat Ricky/Cesar to the Pitstop at a plaza to claim first place and $5,000 each... There are only three tables at the Detour, and with Walla Walla, paramedics Amber/Vinny and Rod/Leti currently occupying the tables, they decide to just keep occupying the tables, help each other and keep swapping the meat around (no double entendres to be had here, though), while GFs Yvonne/Melissa and S/B are left outside to wait until someone finishes, and of course the first three are not interested in helping the latter two (indeed, there's a whole deal with Angie stopping Danny from helping) Meanwhile, Derek wins rock-paper-scissors to do the Roadblock :-)
- Despite the above attempt to put some space between these two sets of teams, all those five teams finish in very close proximity, with Y/M and S/B finishing about a minute behind Rod/Leti, A/V and Walla Walla... Derek/Shelisa make a point of jogging up to the Pitstop before getting eliminated and quipping about not having to be fetched in the field... but that's only because they didn't get to do the Detour, which as former cops, they would have gone with the other one :-\, which involves dusting for fingerprints... Another thing mentioned in their exit is that Shelisa is a cancer survivor (she's far from the first cancer survivor to race; heck, that same season with the balloon bulls was won by one [!]) Also turns out local broadcaster merely puts the last break (which on this airing, instead of the usual trailer, consisted entirely of a 10-second ID) immediately before the Bruckheimer credit instead of after, apparently placing the credit immediately before the next episode trailer (not that I'd know; I always tuned out as soon as the credit appeared)
Ep 7
- This week, we're in Montevideo, Uruguay, starting with a Roadblock involving welding, where Amber is trying to get Vinny to make her dad proud, and Danny reveals he once helped build a robot for sorting Skittles (!) The RB apparently gets dealt with completely within the first half-hour or so though, so most of this recap will be dedicated to a Detour between drumming and singing, and Ricky/Cesar are excited to do the singing in full costume, and of course since one of them speaks Spanish, he gets more of the lyrics to remember :-) (The first thing I heard was Amber/Vinny mentioning Palermo, which briefly led me to think they were in Italy, until I saw them asking a passerby in Spanish)
- Meanwhile, S/B are trying to find the Detour clue at a plaza near Mercado del Puerto, and Puerto literally means port... so they end up driving into the port asking for directions LOL. A/V's drumming trainer looks a bit like Kenan Thompson LOL, while R/C say they're "going to shake this stage, literally" after their first go is no good :-)
- R/C get it on the 3rd go, getting the clue for the Pitstop at Playa Malvin beach, and while running past Walla Walla, Ricky trips in his costume... and somehow hardly misses a beat LOL. Walla Walla get their clue on their first attempt drumming, so it's going to be a close one.... Meanwhile S/B finally get to the correct plaza and decide to do drumming because one of them was a drummer in high school :-) Vinny is great with the drums, while Amber is struggling, but they decide they'll give it one more try before switching
- Over at Playa Malvin, Phil Keoghan is waiting with a dude with a large paper-mache head for carnival, and Ricky/Cesar edge out Walla Walla to win a trip to Paris (Seine cruise! Guided Orsay Museum tour! Versailles! Champagne and wine tasting!), though Walla Walla is glad to arrive with R/C still on the mat :-) Back at the Detour, J/S are 3rd, A/V are 4th after getting the drumming done on the 3rd go, and Rod/Leti are 5th, leaving just S/B (who find that the drum beat they're learning is a singular beat) and Y/M (who are no good after 7 attempts)
- A/V spend quite a bit of time looking for their car after getting the clue, and even after finding their car, they're still fighting quite a bit... An A/V confessional talks about how stubborn they are, and let's just say my dad can relate LOL. One of Y/M tells the other to smile a bit while making their 8th attempt, and they finally get their clue just ahead of S/B :-)
- Juan/Shane were in 3rd after the Detour, but end up finding themselves on a one-way road while trying to find a shortcut to the beach, bleeding 10-15 minutes on the drive, allowing Rod/Leti and A/V to jump to 3rd and 4th... and J/S end up bleeding so much time, they're in a footrace against Y/M, that Y/M end up winning (losing a shoe in the process LOL!) But at least J/S are still in the next leg, whereas S/B get elimmed with the biggest smiles Phil Keoghan's ever seen on an elimmed team LOL. Their exit interview talks about how rejuvenated they feel and one of them talks about how great the other is, before showing them running into the ocean, LOL.
Ep 8
- Barbados now, and after a somewhat rainy start, one of the clue pickups is the Rihanna Drive Monument, dedicated to one of the island's most famous locals, which consists of a house with a mat saying "Rihanna":-) We get a long-winded explanation from Walla Walla of how they have to keep their crew, and we literally mean as in sound and camera, behind them at all times... Of course it turns out to be important, since they end up losing their crew at a roundabout :-\ We'll see how that affects them in a bit... (other than having to rely on in-car cams for their segments, obviously)
- Ricky/Cesar are first to the Detour at scenic Long Bay Beach: Seaweed Clearing, to allow turtles to lay eggs and Fish Pot Building with wood and chickenwire to catch fish :-) R/C wanted to do Seaweed, but after seeing how far it is, decide to do Fish Pot, and make a cone of chickenwire to funnel the fish into the pot... and since they're first, they get to do the one closest to the example :-)
- Amber/Vinny mock a dude cross the street slowly as being "on island time", while Rod/Leti find themselves having to get directions to their next waypoint at a gas station as they note that not knowing where you are is a big part of the race, and Shane quips "That's the JUAN" while looking for their next waypoint :-) As the other teams are arriving at the Detour to head to the cluebox, Walla Walla arrive at the Detour and are forced to wait for their crew nearby :-\
- Vinny was born in the Philippines, so he's familiar with the ways of learning how to fish, and doing the Fish Pot reminds him of his childhood :-) The chickenwire results in contestants pricking their hands a lot, and R/C say in light of getting pricked every so often: "This is 'B positive' blood... Vampires will love this" :-D Walla Walla's crew has shown up, so now they're starting Fish Pot in 5th... After patching up a misplaced hole, R/C are first to get their fish pot to pass muster, and get a photo of Hasting Rocks as the Pitstop clue, where Phil Keoghan will be waiting with dancing dudes on stilts and a band :-) Meanwhile, J/S show up in last, decide to deviate from everyone else and lug some seaweed (!) While Rod/Leti are wondering why their fish pot isn't passing, there's an overhead quip from a contestant saying "Typical Thursday in Barbados"... and I'm actually watching on Thursday, LOL. Anyways, Rod/Leti's pot is missing the corner supports, and they're easy to miss since they're partially buried in the sand :-\
- J/S haul two wheelbarrow loads and a bit to fill their barrel, jumping from last to 2nd (!) This is then followed with R/C arriving at the Pitstop, with their shirts even fitting quite well with the occasion LOL. They get $7500 each, and it seems like a minor cut was made by local broadcaster, since I noticed a few frames of a shot after Phil declared R/C first place and a sound effect cutting off (given that Will/James' proposal moment from a few seasons ago was snipped, broadcasters might have been some issues with the "boyfriends" there?) Rod/Leti finally notice that they were missing the corner sticks and get to work, while Walla Walla just want to get it right the first time...
- J/S get 2nd place, and Phil commends them for their big jump :-) After Amber/Vinny edge out Yvonne/Melissa in a foot race, it comes down to Rod/Leti and Walla Walla, who finish their fish pots in that exact order, and so we have the usual frantic intercutting between Rod/Leti get lost on their way to the Pitstop, Walla Walla hoping they get lost (apparently they refer to Leti as Chichi :-)), Rod/Leti getting stuck in mud, Danny making his own commentary, and Rod/Leti pushing their car out of the mud, with Rod quipping that's what being strong does sometimes LOL.
- Finally, Rod/Leti get 5th at the Pitstop, and after mentioning having to push their car, Phil quips to the greeter, a stocky dancing lady, that Rod would have had no problems pushing the car with his muscles :-), as Rod/Leti are running under the dancing stilt people... Walla Walla show up and get their elimination, and Danny concedes that being penalized for losing the crew was a brutal way to get Philiminated, actually using the common fandom terminology, prompting Phil to give him a literal tip of the hat (LOL) before also running under the dancing stilt people :-)
- This week's leg is in Santiago, and by the time I'm tuning in, firefighters Sunny/Bizzy are in last place, picking up a clue at some place with classic cars (apparently, teams were looking for Marilyn Monroe's T-Bird), while couple Rod/Leticia are so lost driving to the Detour they're driving into the mountains (!!)
