Winx S3 so far: thoughts
Nov. 22nd, 2006 09:39 amHey, feel free to post this at
winx_club and see what others think...
1. Last season, much of the end game was devoted to the Winx getting their Charmix power boosts and using it in the battle. However, this year, the show has forgotten about these power boosts entirely, except for one brief mention by FG in her speech about the Enchantix. Consider that there have been several opportunities (read: battles) to whip them out, this is pretty off-putting. And when I go to school, I'm supposed to remember things from year to year. Unrealistic.
To me, this problem is nothing new, either. Much of the plot of S1 was about Bloom and her Dragonfire, and the end game was devoted to Bloom doing anything to get it back. When she did she had such good control of her powers. But then in S2, there were only a few brief mentions of Bloom's power, and definitely not the kind of action we got from Bloom in the last few eps of S1.
This makes me wonder if the writers are getting paid well at Rainbow. Heck, I'm wondering if the writers still know about the Charmix. If they don't, that would explain the lack of usage.
Seriously. I want to see Bloom use her Charmix a few more times. If she got it first, she deserves to use it more. (Heck, I want to see ANYONE use their Charmix. Whether Layla can still use hers since she has Enchantix is up for question.)
At least covergence made a comeback in 3x05, though. That's one thing they haven't forgotten.
2. Lori wrote in her review for 3x04 (forgive me!), "Good to see characters other than Bloom and Stella fighting tough. But when will Flora get to do so? I'm still waiting for her turn."
I have the same sentiment generally. Flora rarely ever gets to do anything. I mean, she did save the Tree Flower in the Pixie Village, but not much else. She came up with a plan to attack the 2x08 monster from both sides but it never played out because she got spit on. Her Charmix break-in was the worst out of the group (using it on an ice-ball when Stella's power would have worked better... and she was actually available then... what was the point of having Flora do it? That she is more confident in her powers?). If she had gotten to use her Solar Ivy in 3x03, that would have been the biggest thing she did all season so far. (And I would have liked to see what this "Solar Ivy" looks like ;-) Even Tecna and Timmy engineering Sky's dive would have been more preferable to Bloom doing this.)
3. Layla's sacrifice. Most of us don't mind the Enchantix not helping her blindness (that's an understatement, actually), but the question is, does her sacrifice ring true?
For me, I'm not sure. On the one hand, it's good that the writers aren't taking the easy way out. On the other hand, it's illogical (if plot-friendly) that the writers aren't taking the OTHER easy way out. I'll call this, the "Johnny Logan".
So, the whole idea behind the healing staff is that it requires the twilight's rays to be stored in the staff for it to work. Unless twilights don't happen often on Tides (which might actually be a good explanation), there should no problem for Layla waiting until the next twilight for her turn. That's the big "if" behind the question, because there's a BIG difference between knowing that you'll be healed the next twilight, and having no idea whatsoever when you'll be healad.
4. Despite both being power boosts, everything about the Enchantix seems to be opposite to that of the Charmix, so far.
* Bloom (the first Winx we met) got her Charmix first, and in her casuals. Layla (the last Winx we met) got her Enchantix first, and in her fairy outfit.
* It was a happy mood when Bloom get her Charmix. It was more of a glum mood when Layla get her Enchantix.
* There was no mention of Charmix on the show until Bloom earned hers. FG went to length about Enchantix in her speech.
* The Charmix-gathering was clumped together in 4 eps. Hopefully, the Enchantix-gathering will be spread out.
* Charmix is an addition to the existing fairy outfit. Enchantix is a new fairy outfit altogether.
Given enough time, I probably could think of more.
5. Lastly, in 1x02, Grizelda said of Alfea, "This place will be your home for the next five years." We're in year 3. Although no one on the show talks of this being their last year, much discussion is being made amongst the fans that this is the last year. The main points being that Enchantix is the last step before becoming real fairies, and that there is a movie after S3.
Hmm...

Date: 2006-11-22 04:18 am (UTC)This is just some 'devil's advocate' thinking about Layla's whining. Yeah, it's annoying, but I bet being blind would be annoying too.
What's next? Making Musa deaf? It would conflict with her powers... or taking her voice away. I swear, if this does happen, someone owes me some candy!
