Today, we compare "Miss Magix". (And non-YouTube-ers are covered too! Well... eventually they will be.)

And for those of you who don't watch YouTube vids (looks toward New York state), I've got you covered. I'm going to transcribe the video for you, and give a little commentary, too.

Transcript

[Winx Club Comparisons, by SpiderBraids]
[Episode: Miss Magix (US: Miss Magix)]
[First, a nice clip that was only in the original...]
[...with Sky (as Fake!Brandon) talking with Bloom downtown.]

(Fade in: Magix)
(Shot of an elevator on a building)
(Pan over to outdoor cafe [same as seen in 1x14])
(Bloom and Sky are at a table)

Sky: These are incredible dreams you're having. (cut to Kiko and Lady [Sky's dog]) So, every night this nymph reveals herself a bit more. You say she calls you by name, and her voice sounds familiar huh?

Bloom: She looks familiar too, but I don't know why.

S: Hmm, maybe you've seen her before.

B: Well, that's not the point. It's like every night, it's a new episode of this dream. It's not by accident. It's as if she's showing me the way.

S: Do you think it's because you found out that you're a fairy and not just an ordinary earthling?

(Cut to bustling town activity... pan over: Bloom and Sky are walking on a sidewalk, with Lady on Sky's leash)

B: Why do I posess such powers? And why do they seem to come to me so easily? so naturally? (bustling town activity) Daphne, the nymph in my dreams, wants to tell me something, but I don't know what. (show temple [from 1x08]) And, you know the temple in the square? The 9 nymphs are sculpted on the facade. (close-up of Daphne on temple wall) Well, the middle nymph? That's Daphne. (back to Bloom) Night after night, I hear her call my name and bid me to come to her.

(Pan over to Sky)

S: Hmm... did you say Daphne?

(Screen fills with blue, to show a flashback to the scene in 1x09 where Bloom is attacked by all those books)

B: A few days ago, I went to the library, and there were tons of books about Daphne. And when I went back there wasn't even one! Obviously, someone made them disappear. (Flashback ends) But I don't understand why. (Pause) There are so many things going on.

(Bloom and Sky are at a zebra crossing... Lady is looking a bit restless, while Kiko jumps into Bloom's arms)

S: Daphne huh? I know just what we need. This is a job for TIMMY! I'll let him loose in the library at Red Fountain and then... (close-up on Sky as he notices his dog getting a bit restless) Lady, please, stop pulling! (back to Bloom) You'll see. Timmy will find whatever information you need. I am SURE of it. (At this point, Sky is practically being dragged by Lady) Gotta go now. See you later Bloom!

B: Thanks "Brandon", see ya!

[Clip: The Trix's plan at the pageant]
[First, the "original" version.]

(We see the shadows of the Trix, walking the halls at the pageant venue in their casual outfits)

Icy: Ready for the show?

Stormy: Are ya kidding? I still don't understand what we're doing in a place as disgusting as this. Everyone's so OLD.

I: It doesn't matter now. Sisters, we are here to do a GOOD deed.

(cut to)

Stormy and Darcy: Huh???

(close-up of Icy's eyes)

I: You remember Lucy? She asked if I could help her win the beauty contest.

(over to Darcy and Stormy)

D: (making "crazy" gesture) She's got bats in the belfry.

S: She doesn't need US to win... she needs a MIRACLE. (Stormy and Darcy giggle)

I: (after a small giggle) It'll be fun. You'll see.

D: Whattaya have in mind?

I: Well, she wants to win the contest right?

S: She wants to be this year's "Miss Magix".

I: And she will be. We will make her secret dream come true and THEN we'll smash it to RUBBLE. (Darcy and Stormy seem amazed... cut to Icy's shadow on the wall) We'll cast a spell that will make her IRRESISTIBLE (back to Icy, then the other two) And THEN, as she is crowned "Miss Magix", we'll BREAK THE SPELL and expose the whole scam. She will be totally humiliated (cut to Icy as her lips fill the screen) right there, center stage, before everyone's eyes.

D: Wow, Icy, that's BRILLIANT!

S: A wonderfully entertaining evening. Good thinking sis!

I: I always have good ideas. Heh-heh-heh. (Pan over to Lucy) Now enough talk, let's get to work. (Close up of Lucy) Lucy! You ready?

[Wow. That's quite mean, no?]
[And now, the American version.]

(We see the shadows of the Trix, walking the halls at the pageant venue in their casual outfits)

Darcy: Icy, this is NOT the demonology convention...

Stormy: And those perky girls with hair rollers were definitely not witches. Why did you lie to us?

Icy: I had to get you here. It's a beauty pageant. We're here to help someone.

(cut to)

Stormy and Darcy: Who???

(close-up of Icy's eyes)

I: Lucy the Loser. She wants to be "Miss Magix".

(over to Darcy and Stormy)

D: (making "crazy" gesture) Does she REALLY think she can win?

S: Yeah, it's a beauty contest, not a... (Stormy and Darcy giggle) ...freak show!

I: That's true. But I'm going to cast a spell.

D: But why help her?

I: So she can defeat a certain fairy.

S: Oh, let me guess. Is it Miss Solaria?

I: Stella it is. Winning this pageant is her biggest dream. She thinks she's so cool and pretty. (Darcy and Stormy seem amazed... cut to Icy's shadow on the wall) Well, WE'RE going to burst her bubble. (back to Icy, then the other two) Also, get this: In exchange for our help, Loser Lucy will do all our homework in all subjects for the rest of the year. It'll be a double witch-up: (cut to Icy as her lips fill the screen) with one spell, we cause TWO freshmen to lose, and WE WIN.

D: You are... so brilliant.

S: Oh yeah. You are twice as cool as ice, wi-otch.

I: Now we are going to need some major conjuring, if we're going to have a hope of making Miss Homely (Pan over to Lucy, cut to close-up) pretty enough to shatter Stella's dream.

(Two cents: I'll give credit for the 4K version having the witches know that Stella is competing. I mean, if two of the Winx switched bodies, you'd think that they'd be the first to know. I'll deal with the question of "Why do they want to humiliate Lucy if it means a Stella win?" later.)

[Remember these for later. Moving on...]

[Clip: The crying girl with the 'fro]
[First, the "original" version.]

(The Winx open the door as they hear the girl with the 'fro crying)

Girl with the 'fro: What am I going to do now?

Girl with mirror: I'm sure we'll find a solution...

(Bloom's walking over to her)

Bloom: What's happened that's so terrible?

Mirror: A catastrophe.

Fro: Look what happened to my hair! Normally it's straight! I was just walking down the hall when... POOF! My whole head of hair puffed up just like that! (resumes crying)

(And it's gelatinous, too, as it wobbles like Jell-O when Bloom touches it. Fro is sad, and Bloom looks alarmed)

Stella: (Gasp) WHAT IS THAT?!

(Both Fro and Bloom hear the above. Bloom is upset, and Fro more so. Fro runs off through the halls. Eventually, Fro comes across the Trix.)

Icy: Nice hair. Congratulations.

(The witches cackle, while Fro feels even more hurt by that comment. Bloom is looking around the corner.)

Bloom: The usual suspects. (runs off)

[I guess the Italians haven't heard of the 'fro?]
[And now, the American version.]

(The Winx open the door as they hear the girl with the 'fro crying... her pitch is higher than in the "original" clip, and I mean WAAAY higher)

Girl with the 'fro: I'll never win now!!

Girl with mirror: You... still have your looks...

(Bloom's walking over to her)

Bloom: What happened to your voice?

Mirror: She cast a spell.

Fro: And I got it wrong! I said "voice" instead of "toys choice" (thank you Lori!)... Oh, maybe it's not half-bad!

(NB: Audacity is my friend: I pitched her voice down 8 half-notes to hear what she said... and it still doesn't really make sense, esp. when one no longers gets the impression that the Trix screwed with her... BTW, the ep airs again this weekend. Maybe someone can watch with CC and get the right words?)

(The scene with Bloom touching the 'fro is cut, as we go straight from Fro's comment to Stella)

Stella: Oh, that's awful!

(Both Fro and Bloom hear the above. Bloom is upset, and Fro more so. Fro runs off through the halls.)

Stella: I didn't mean THAT. I'm really sorry! Ohh... Maybe the judges won't notice! It's really not that bad!

(Eventually, Fro comes across the Trix.)

Icy: Ugh, I thought roosters only crowed in the morning!

(The witches cackle, while Fro feels even more hurt by that comment. Bloom is looking around the corner.)

Bloom: Hmph, what are they doing here?! (runs off)

(Two cents: 1) At least the original shows how much the Trix will do to ensure a Lucy win, even if only to take it away from her immediately. Fro screwing up on her own, I just don't buy. 2) Wonder what most Americans would say if they encountered a girl whose straight hair turned into a 'fro right before a beauty pageant? "That's awful" would rank towards the bottom, I'm sure. Maybe it's just different in Italy, and 'fros are seen as ugly there.)

[Clip: Disqualified!]
[First, the "original" version.]

(Stella and Lucy stand in front of a bunch of other injured contestants)

Announcer Guy: How about a nice round of applause for all of our contestants?

(There is no applause: sound problem, or just a tough crowd? Anyways, Anno Guy has his envelope, and he's ripping it open and taking out the slip)

AG: And this year's "Miss Magix"... is... (we cut to Stella) Miss Lucy!

(Stella's face quickly turns into a frown, and she's bloody indignant, as the award ceremony plays out. The crowd goes wild as Lucy takes the crown. Cut back to the Trix getting ready to rain on her parade. Close up on Icy as her eyes glow for a second. Suddenly, Miss Lucy turns into Miss Homely, and the crowd is yelling, "Oh NO!" and booing. The Trix walk back up the aisle, as the crowd keeps yelling booing and yelling random things, and Lucy runs off stage, crying.)

(ISTR that there was a brief shot of Bloom saying "Oh no" in disbelief in there... in fact, it's intact in the FoxBox footage seen below.)

[And now, the American version.]

(Stella and Lucy stand in front of a bunch of other injured contestants)

Announcer Guy: How about a big round of applause for our contestants? And now, (cut to him ripping open his envelope) finally, the moment we've all been waiting for!

(AG takes out the slip)

AG: And this year's "Miss Magix" is... (we cut to Stella) Miss Popularis!

(The contestant behind Stella has a different dress than in the original:)

Original: she's in a swimsuit. Edited: she's in a nightgown.

S: HUH?!

(Stella's face quickly turns into a frown, and she's bloody indignant, as the award ceremony plays out. Cut to Bloom, staring in disbelief.)

B: Something's not right. (Cut back to Miss Popularis taking the crown) I bet she's using magic.

(Split second shot of the Trix going "hmm", then a shot of Lucy and co, then back to disbelieving Bloom)

B: If there's magic here / remove it now. / Show us what's real / When she takes a bow!

(Miss Popularis turns into Lucy, and the crowd is booing. "She's an impostor!")

AG: Miss Popularis is disqualified!

(The Trix walk back up the aisle.)

I: Oh well. She's STILL doing our homework!

(Lucy runs off stage, crying.)

(Two cents: This is a pretty heated topic. After all, why would the Trix screw over Lucy if it meant a Stella win? It shows that they don't let anything interfere with their plans, but wouldn't it be in their character to at least huddle just before the announcement? "Icy, we have a problem. If we take away Lucy's looks when she wins, surely Stella would be crowned instead, and we hate Stella!" "Oh screw it. I want her to be TOTALLY humiliated in public." "Yeah, but we can't let Stella win!" blah blah blah. Of course, in the US version, this is not an issue.)

[Clip: The result of Stella's exam]
[First, the "original" version.]

(Fade in from black to classroom)

Palladium: Stella, from what I've seen today, I'd say you weren't really (cut to Stella) prepared for the test. Am I right?

Stella: Yes, professor...

P: (is writing in his book) As much as it breaks my heart to see my students fail, I can't help but give you an F, Stella. You didn't do the work. (drops the pen) Now, if you want to succeed, better set your shoulder to the wheel. (Cut to Stella returning to her seat, dejectedly) And hurry. Because the longer you wait, the harder it will be for you to catch up.

(Stella sits in her seat dejectedly)

Bloom: Hear that? You can still do it...

(Stella turns to Bloom, and hugs her)

B: And anyway, right now the future doesn't look so bleak. (Stella lets go of her) Our vacation is about to start. (All the girls celebrate)

[Hate to say you had it coming, Stella...]
[...but you had it coming.]
[And now, the American version.]

(Fade from end of her exam to classroom)

Palladium: Your strategy was promising, I can tell you studied. (Cut to Stella) It's a shame it ended like that.

Stella: It's... a shame???

P: (is writing in his book) The chamber will take your entire performance into consideration then assign you either a pass or a fail. (About 5 seconds have been cut from the footage, so we no longer see Pally drop his pen. Cut to Stella returning to her seat. Three seconds without dialog.) Here it is... you passed!

(The short bit with Bloom trying to cheer up Stella is cut, so it immediately cuts to Stella turning to Bloom and hugging her)

B: You did it! Whattaya say we celebrate, huh?

S: Count me in! (lets go of Bloom)

B: Manicures and milkshakes? (All the girls celebrate)

[Say WHAT, Palladium?]

(Two cents: I'm with Frank on this one. Stella sucked at the exam, and shouldn't have passed that exam at all.)

I like the cut clip, but *insert my usual line about cuts being a necessity in the US of A*

The Trix fucking with Lucy for no real reason is much less realistic than them helping Lucy to fuck with Stella.

I like Stormy's "miracle" line. In both versions, Darcy's "brilliant" line is OOC for her. She's not that much of a suck up. Stormy's line in the uncut should be Darcy's and Darcy's should be Stormy's, though Stormy's line in the 4Kids version is more fitting to Stormy.

I like our version of the afro scene much better. It's kinda insulting and maybe even racist in the uncut.

She says "choice." It's pretty clear to me. The last line isn't though. I have no idea what she says. Oh, and the girl with the mirror is Lolina.

Why do you have such an issue with people messing up? Is it so unbelievable that a fairy cast a spell wrong, especially when she's already nervous? People fuck up on an hourly basis. It's not unrealistic at all.

Not sure where you're coming from on that, but yeah.

Having pitched it down in Audacity (it's good, and it's free!), that part was pretty clear. It was the "choice" part that wasn't. Thanks Lori!

True. But which seems more entertaining? Some random fairy making a random screw-up, or some random fairy getting victimized by the Trix backstage, as a curtain raiser to the mayhem that will occur later? I say the latter.

Well, freaking about an afro is insulting to all people with afros, most of whom are black. Also, it's a symbol of the black power movement, so the girl being so devastated by it could be considered racist because she's obviously against something that's rather signature to black people. Er, you guys don't have a lot of black people in your country, do you? Racism is a very sticky issue in mine.

I actually prefer the fairy messing up. By far. The Trix are always after people. At least a fairy screwing herself over is different! Repetition is not entertaining for me, so I appreciate difference. Icy's comment could also be considered the straw that broke the camel's back, thus cementing the elimination of that girl, so the Trix were still active in her downfall.
