[Previously on Winx Club™: Sky has invited Bloom over to Eraklyon. Stella blabs about what it's supposed to be like, and Bloom is nervous. Diaspro's still mad at Bloom, and Baltor gives her a potion.]
Ladies and gentlemen, the WinxTalk Podcast is back.
On this edition, it's revenge for Diaspro, heartbreak for Bloom, Enchantix for Stella... and a "screw you" for Flora and Helia fans. And there's trouble brewing for Layla too. All this, plus all the news during the hiatus, on WinxTalk Podcast #13, with your host SpiderBraids.
We begin with "Dark Sky", the first episode out of the hiatus. It took a whole season and then some, but Diaspro, with a little help from Baltor's potion, finally has her revenge on Sky for ditching her way back when, and now she's turned Sky against the Winx. In other highlights, Layla REALLY gets to show off her Enchantix powers:
[Layla summons her Enchantix and finds her rubber glue attack is like 1000 times stronger. Now THIS is a power boost!]
while Stella gets her Enchantix by putting herself in the line of fire, quite literally, to save her dad after Cassandra abandons him:
[Stella fights the dragon and earns her Enchantix. Not much in the audio department during the fight though]
Hope Radius realizes now that Cassy doesn't love him, and finds someone who genuinely does. Winx needs to distance itself from that tired cliche, like, right now.
This was NOT a good week for Flora and Helia fans, however. Helia is absent from yet another big party (extending his absence streak to 7 episodes), while Flora gets attacked, once again preventing her from doing anything remotely cool.
[During a chase scene, Flora gets hit by a dragon, and has to be carried to the Specs' ship]
Lori Francz reviews as usual:
(BZZZ! -- Noise I use to punctuate between myself and a quote)
"This was a good episode for just about everyone. I didn’t hate anything anyone said or did.
I am surprised to see the same dresses from Stella’s Princess Ball. It shocks me that Stella would appear at two big parties in the same dress. Besides, didn’t it get all torn?
I still feel bad for Diaspro. Look at how Sky treats her! So rude to one that he treated so poorly. What a jerkstore. I hope that this experience makes him realize he shouldn’t screw people over like that.
Bloom is kind of annoyingly weepy. I mean, she’s got to know this is a spell. I suppose she thinks if Sky’s love can turn her from Dark Bloom back to herself that hers can heal him, but I think Baltor is a lot stronger than Darkar."
(BZZZ!)
But remember that Bloom didn't see Chimera's little surprise coming, despite being around for these:
[Bloom hears about Chimera's princess ball]
[Bloom hears about Chimera calling herself the princess of Solaria from the shop owner]
On to Layla now...
(BZZZ!)
"Layla had a superb showing in this episode. Loved her rubber/glue spell and her attitude in dealing with the guard and with Sky. She makes up for a lot of her “I’m blind” boohooing in this episode.
Musa, too, I really liked. Not enough to put her back at the top, but enough that I don’t outright hate her. She looked really pretty in this ep, so I didn’t grind my teeth at her appearance. Although, I still think she looks too much like Chimera with the long dark blue hair.
Flora is once again taken down without getting the chance to do anything. She really needs to do something kickbutt every now and then, but she never does."
(BZZZ!)
When I read that comment, there were two things I thought of: Her lack of performance in Party Monster...
[Flora comes up with a plan to deal with the monster, but then gets hit with digestive juices as the Winx freeze in fear instead of attacking like she said]
And her lack of performance in Pretty Pretty Princess.
[The Specs' ship is icing up, and Flora comes up with a plan to use Solar Ivy, but Timmy and Tecna both tell her off]
You could tell from the look on her face there that she really wanted to DO something. Something that didn't involve attacking a griffin trying to protect its babies.
Anyways... the writers ought to stop letting Flora get her butt kicked or get told off, and let her actually do something REALLY COOL with her powers. Something that doesn't involve healing a flower or growing giant vines. I mean, even when she got her Charmix last season, she seriously misused it her first time around...
[Chatta and Flora see the Ice Crusher. Flora says "Don't panic, Chatta..." but instead of adding "Stella will handle this", she goes out and grows her vines. BLEH!]
And now, to finish the review...
(BZZZ!)
"Stella was brilliantly Stella in this ep. Sadly, no laugh out loud funny lines, but she was her likeable self again instead of the early Season 3 disaster. Her Enchantix was nice, too, and didn’t seem as randomly thrown in at the end as I thought it might."
(BZZZ!)
We'll get to the next episode after the news.
(News sting)
And now, news from the Winx world. Since this podcast has been on hiatus, here's everything Winx-wise that happened in the past month and a bit:
Season 3 Winx premiered in Canada on YTV with the 4K version, while Italy premiered season 3 with 3 episodes a week on Rai Due.
The official Italian site for Winx, winxclub.com has been giving away wallpaper graphics by answering questions relating to each week's episodes.
In America, the 2nd season was released on DVD, with a 2 disc set containing the first 12 episodes. It retails for $15, but you can get it at the Amazon website for $11. The rest of the season comes to DVD in September.
Italian Season 3 DVDs are also available for preorder from places like eBay and internetbookshop. They're coming in March.
Ratings for Winx from Cynopsis have been sporadic. January 20th's Winx pulled in a 0.6 and 4 share. January 27th's Winx earned 1.3 and 8 share, and February 10th's Winx earned 0.7 and 4 share.
Across the pond, McDonald's franchises in several European countries, including the UK, gave away Winx toys as part a Happy Meal promotion.
And that's news from the Winx world.
(End news sting)
On to "Operation Boyfriend Rescue". No prizes for guessing who needs rescuing here. Bloom needs some time for Sky's sudden change of heart to sink in. Time to visit her parents!
[Vanessa and Mike talk about Bloom's Sky problems, including mentioning the Darkar incident from last season]
Then, the girls, minus Tecna, head back to Eraklyon to give Sky a good dusting.
[Stella uses her fairy dust on Sky]
But upon returning to Alfea, the Winx run into trouble, as they have weakened the barrier the teachers set up around Alfea. More specifically, _Bloom_ has weakened the barrier, as, in spite of Tecna and Digit's barrier-portal-creating gizmo, and Riven's skillful piloting releasing them right on their doorstep, her ankles still breached the barrier and triggered its alarm. So just like in "Royal Heartbreak", Bloom has just gotten the whole Winx Club into trouble. Poor Bloom... and Tecna.
But at least it's not as terrible as getting forced into an arranged marriage like Layla has, as the Winx find out that she's supposed to get married to someone named Naboo. Now THAT'S terrible.
And now, some of Lori Francz's thoughts.
(BZZZ!)
"An okay episode, but rather confusing. They kept alternating between treating Sky like he was spelled and like he wasn’t. Vanessa and Mike were the brilliant voices of reason. There was no way Bloom could act all angry at Sky because SHE was spelled last season and he didn’t get mad at her for it. So it was a spell there, but later on, Bloom tried to just talk to him and that didn’t work. It worked for him when she was spelled, but Baltor’s no Darkar. He’s way more powerful. Riven also acted like Sky wasn’t spelled. Freakin’ continuity, people! Either you all think he’s spelled or you don’t. Pick one and stick with it. This flip-flopping is crap.
Stella had a strong showing, even if she hadn’t used her Enchantix powers. She was good this entire episode. Very Stella, but not the annoying version.
What kind of crappy barrier can be breached by a little device made by a student? This barrier is supposed to be some super-powerful spell, right? So why can it be breached that easily and why does breaching it once hurt it for future use? Time for them to upgrade that old spell scroll and get a new barrier spell.
I wish it had been someone else's ankles that triggered the alarm. Flora or Musa doing it wouldn't be so bad, but Bloom's already caught the eye of some parents. Now she's sneaking back in after curfew and weakening the barrier. That's going to make her look like more of a Baltor ally."
(BZZZ!)
Wouldn't be the first time Bloom was accused of siding with the enemy, even unintentionally.
[At Cloud Tower, Lucy accuses Bloom of giving the Trix the Dragonfire]
Most of us don't like relationships for relationships' sake, like the Flora and Helia relationship. Well, here's her take on Layla's newest problem...
(BZZZ!)
"And here’s the new drama. Layla’s gotta get married. Feh. I’d say screw the kingdom and become something else. No one forces me into marriage. But Layla’s more diplomatic than I am. I just hope her relationship with Naboo is very slow and very difficult. She’s gotta give him crap. She’s just gotta. If the writers turn this into another Flora-Helia, I'm going to write them a nasty letter."
Next week, Bloom's breach has serious consequences on Alfea's safety. Let's just say if you're a fan of the student witches, you're in for a treat.
And that's it for this edition. Comments and suggestions are welcome at my LiveJournal, spiderbraids.livejournal.com, and the Winx group at Yahoo, tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/winx. See you in two weeks. Thanks for listening.
