In a nutshell, we finally get to see Tecna transform. Oh yeah, there's also some huge stone in a lake to be dealt with, and Alfea's got a new teacher who should be a biiiit familiar to Bloom. And Stella. And Layla.

Recap: Stella and the others made their way to Downland to take Brandon from neatfreak, but in the end, it didn't take a huge smackdown from a feisty fairy to stop the wedding... it took a pixie's magical flower instead. Yeah, color me underwhelmed.

Warning. Today's episode is being done very strangely. (And I'm not talking about the title card being misspelled "The Misterious Stone", either.)

Night time. Alfea. We see a shadow on the wall. "That's right, Bloom is about to kiss someone, but it's not Prince Sky." We see Prince Sky watching the shadow from a distance...

... and it turns out Messenger is just organizing a paper cutout puppet show, when she is interrupted by a pixie pet intruding in. This is the big-eared bear. He's apologizing for being a bit late, and Messenger asks "You can speak???" Well, yeah. Anyways, Messenger has the others make some room for big ears before running the story straight from the top again.

Told you this was strange. I'll just let Messenger tell the story as needed.

"It all began when a great big storm, called Hurricane Nimbus unleashed its destructive fury over the whole of Alfea and the kindgom of Magix." We see a beaver struggling against the wind while others are hiding a shelter. "However, the storm was merely a backdrop for a most mysterious event that was about to take place. Something so strange even the fairies had no idea what to make of it. A huge stone, smooth and mysterious had appeared out of nowhere." And a really huge stone at that, such that Messenger models it with a brick standing upright in a bowl of water.

"Our heroes, who had just returned from a dangerous mission in Downland, were as yet unaware of its presence." Cue paper cutout of the RF plane in front of a moving sky background.

Fade to actual RF plane. It's arriving at Alfea, and Flora, Musa and Tecna are running to the ship, with Piff and Messenger close behind. Meanwhile, Kiko is cutting a paper doll of Bloom. "Our friend, Kiko, who was very anxious about Bloom's return, was making a very special gift for her."

"As you can imagine, all eyes were on us pixies, and three of us bonded on the spot." Messenger, why are you in this shot instead of hoop skirt pixie? Anyways, we see Tecna looking at Digit through her handheld as Messegner continues. "Tecna and Digit had met in a chatroom a while back, and were overdue for an actual face to face meeting, and a biiiig hug. Tune and Musa discovered a common sense of style." Lavender mistakes Musa's distinct pigtails for unique headphones :D Just wait until you see her in her transformed state, Tune. Now those are headphones.

"And Chatta wasted no time telling Flora all her secrets." Pigtails asks Flora about her boyfriend. Flora keeps telling Chatta that she doesn't even have one, but that won't stop Chatta from badgering her about one. So, after the pixie with the flower ends up with Stella instead of the resident flower girl, the pigtail pixie ends up with Flora instead of a fairy whose fairy gear calls for her hair to become two pigtails. At least the other two have bonded with their logical pixies...

Meanwhile, Kiko is jumping around waiting for Bloom to notice him. Bloom is welcoming Lockette and Blinky to Alfea, and decides to go inside to get them something to eat. Kiko feels ignored, and Sky tries to make some chit-chat with him ("First time a girl dumps you..."), but Kiko's not interested.

"Faragonda was very happy to see the fairies back at Alfea safe and sound. However, the following morning, she summoned the Winx to her office to discuss a most serious matter." FG's office. After congratulating their return (she's pretty relieved herself), FG has examined the evidence from Layla and those tiny friends of hers. She believes that their enemy is much stronger than she first thought. Like, who didn't see that coming?

FG closes the curtains, conjures up a screen, and gives us the skinny. "16 years ago, the entire dimension of Magix was on the brink of destruction. A dark and evil power had emerged from the void, and this was the result." Basically, general mayhem as people tried to avoid getting blasted. Bloom mentions that the three old witches that destroyed her old home planet Domino (about that time, but she doesn't say so here). According to FG, those three witches were just following the orders of the shadow creature, who had recruited them. Seeing that today it has the help of the Trix, FG fears that history's repeating itself.

Pan over to Layla who's holding Piff while Piff is hovering next to her. Alright, who forgot to double check the animation? Anyways, Layla asks if the creature who's doing all this is the same creature who kidnapped the pixies. FG says, judging from Layla's descriptions, our Evil Guy is Lord Darkar. FG makes the screen disappear and opens the curtains again.

As Layla asks why he's back and what he's trying to achieve, FG explains that while she, Griffin and Saladin stopped the old witches, the Lord of the Templars dealt with Evil Guy, by casting him into the darkness and sending him into a slumber. Flo thinks that means he wants revenge, and she's right, but FG also adds that he also wants all the power in the universe, so as to be absolutely invincible. Musa wonders why he kidnapped the npixies, and Layla's wondering what the pixies have that's so valuable.

FG adjusts her glasses... and doesn't respond to Musa and Layla's questions. "What's important now is to stay on guard. His powers are strong enough to affect us, no matter where we are." Tecna is quick to notice, and whispers to Stella, "Faragonda's hiding something from us. She's never done that before." Oh? Try telling that to Bloom, and she'll speak volumes on how FG hid the truth about her Domino roots as well as the nature of her powers from her.

"For now, the pixies will stay at Alfea." Everyone is so happy about this news, but Layla just wants to return to the village with Piff. FG's like "Heck no." "Darkar is capable of spying on our movements. If you ever go back to the pixies' village, you might as well send him a MAP!" Heh. And so... FG decides to let Layla stay at the school, and she's a happy camper. Everyone's cheering. And now, time for the girls to go.

There's a cloud over Alfea. Tune, Chatta, Digit and Lockette are flying through the hall. Tune thinks that FG is a strict but fair headmistress. Girl, if you want strict, try looking at Grizelda. Where's she been at all season, anyway?

Anyways, the others brag about how they'll help their respective fairies: "With me by her side, Flora will not fail!" "And my Tecna will finish at the top of the class." "I know Bloom would never disappoint me." "With our help, success is guaranteed!!" Meanwhile, Kiko is still carrying that paper doll of his down the hall.

Inside the room. As a rather nice ditty plays, Layla and headphones are dancing. Digit and Tecna are playing video games as Messenger flies right over her. Messenger flies past Flora studying next to Tune, Stella vegging out in her chair, and Bloom continuing to play with Lockette, as Kiko looks dejected. Cut to a paper Kiko hopping off as two curtains close. Yep, we're back at the puppet show, as Messenger continues: "There are days when everything seems to go your way. This wasn't one of them."

There is a raging storm at Alfea. A koala with specs is trying to shove some other pixie pet to safety, when he sees a creep in a robe.

One door is shoved open by the wind, as Kiko has just finished cutting a Tecna paper doll. Stella is having another sandwich while she's walking in the hall. "I dunno. It doesn't add up..." "You're right Tecna, this sandwich cost me more than a full facial and a make-up session." Heh. Tecna thinks that FG's keeping some secret from them. As I said, ask Bloom.

Bloom doesn't know anything, heck she wasn't even expecting any of this. Tecna notes that FG didn't tell them what Evil Guy wanted from the pixies, but she suspects FG has all the data. Headphones asks Layla and turns out she doesn't know anything either. Flo and headphones don't understand why FG's hiding something from them. "It's as if she doesn't trust us anymore!" We cut to the window outside, as they discuss the pixies, and then the Trix. Stella's concerned about how they got out, but as we cut back inside, Flo's more concerned about how they got so strong. So many questions, so little time.

Here comes Messenger, with an urgent message from FG. Bloom asks about the message, and, er, Messenger doesn't remember. Good thing she wrote it down, so in a nutshell, FG wants the Winx to come to the lake in their heaviest coats. While a creep in a robe is at Alfea, the Winx make their way to the lake, and find FG immediately. It's the huge stone she's concerned about. It appeared just tonight, and as Tecna scans it with her sensor ladybug (eat your heart out, Star Trek salt shaker!), FG adds that she finds its presence rather disturbing. As the sensor returns to Tec, the results show that it's neither metal nor mineral. "I can't stand it. It's as if it's not even made of matter." Umm... okay. FG tells the fairies to use their powers to destroy the stone at any cost.

Messenger is holding a yellow umbrella above her head. "Some days, it doesn't rain, it pours, and whatever we do is wrong. I'm sure you know what I mean. But what's important is not to give up hope." We cut to a Brandon doll suddenly falling down. Kiko trying to get his paper dolls to stand, without any success whatsoever. He tries standing up the Bloom paper doll, and it looks okay... but it falls again.

"At long last, Hurricane Nimbus took a break. And the Winx? Well, they got crackin'." Everyone runs past two pixie pets, a frog and a pig, as we cut over to Amore, Lockette and Chatta. They're wondering why they're being left behind.

Stone in the lake. Everyone's ready to show it what the Winx can do. First to transform are Sunshine, headphones, and Flo. Sunshine immediately declares that the others transformed for nothing, because she's ready to blast it to smithereens.

She swings a sun ball from her scepter and creates tons of smoke, and she thinks she's just gotten the job done quickly. She turns around and is surprised to see the stone unfazed. The other two take their turns. Flo attacks with a Water Lily Whirlpool, and Musa shoots a sonic blast into the drink. The water rises to cover the stone. As the water goes down, it is clear that the stone is still in perfect condition. "Stupid piece of junk, what's it made of???"

As the three fairies take a breather, Dragonfairy decides it's their turn now, and transforms with the other two. It took her long enough, but Tecna finally gets to be in her fairy outfit. Layla attacks with balls, while Tec strikes with her green lightning stuff. No damage. Dragonfairy shoots a very intense fireball, and gets knocked back real hard. The smoke clears to reveal a still perfectly good-looking stone, as creep in a robe watches, and he appears to be assessing the powers, and he leaves.

All of them are in their fairy gear, but they seem to be sitting there doing nothing. And now, it's raining. Stella asks: "Are we gonna go back inside, or are we just gonna sit here in the rain staring at that dumb rock???"

"Hurricane Nimbus had turned day into night, but bolts of lightning had turned night into day." Alfea. Flora is showering. Bloom is not back. The rest are in bathing robes. Tec says, "She's as stubborn as a jammed PC." Hah. Sunshine still thinks she's fine. Meanwhile, RF is open despite the damage it suffered last year (and it shows even now), and Sky is on his cell. Sky wonders why Bloom isn't on the phone. Brandon thinks she might be having some fun without him, but Sky asks "Wouldn't she have told me if she was going somewhere? I'm just worried that something's happened to her, that's all."

Back at the stone, Bloom is still in her fairy gear, firing fireball after fireball at the stone. Heck, she's bombarding the stone with her fireballs. She chokes on the smoke, and still the stone is 100% intact. A weak Bloom faints and slams into the ground. We look over her fairy outfit one last time, before it disappears in a flash to reveal her casuals. And let me note here that Stella fainted and then morphed out of her fairy gear in a similar fashion way back in the first episode. (I do note that the yellow gem-thing on her fairy outfit is not supposed to be on her casuals, however. Why do she and Tecna have gem-things on their outfits and not the others, anyway?)

Alfea. Still raining. The hidden archives, I believe. Concorda and a few other pixies are with FG. FG: "As you probably know by now, the situation is extremely critical. These must remain secret. You know what to do." "These" being four pieces of jewelry-like thingies she's giving to them. Well, we don't know what this is all about, but this will be on the exam.

Dorm. Flora looks at the rain and thinks that they should go out for Bloom. Stella still thinks she'll come back when she's tired of getting rained on. "Besides, she was acting like she didn't want us hanging around anyway." Yeesh. Meanwhile, Tecna and Musa wonder about the stone... as the lights go out. Stella is annoyed, and Tec knows this should be impossible, since the lights at Alfea run on magic. She wonders whether the lightning has something to do with it. Umm... DUH?

Suddenly, the windows fly open, blowing leaves in, and blowing everything around. It's madness. Flora and Tecna shove the windows closed. And now, Musa hears a door knock. Musa wonders if it's Layla, and yeah, Layla hasn't been in this story since she tried her powers on the stone. Creep in robe carries Bloom in. Everyone's surprised, and... scene.

Curtains. Opening to reveal a paper cut out of clouds and a rotating sun. "After the clouds had dispersed, everything went back to normal... more or less."

Alfea in the morning. FG's room. We get a good look at everyone and their bonded pixies. And I'm wondering where the budget for double checking the animation went this episode. First, the Piff incident, then the gem-thing on Bloom's casual top, and now, Bloom's casual top doesn't have any sleeves. To be fair, this is a quick pan shot, but in an era where freeze-framing is fun, no excuse people.

Anyways, FG is telling them that since they've completed their introductory classes, it's time for them to start their intermediate level subjects. Digit: "Boring! I'd rather watch a screensaver than listen to the headmistress."

Messenger narrates: "That's when the identity of the mysterious man was finally revealed." Creep in robe takes off his hoodie, and the three fairies who went underground say in stereo: "It's the paladin who rescued us from the Trix!"

Beach next to the lake. FG introduces Superhunk as "a leading expert from the famous Malacoy Academy. He'll be joining the faculty at my special request... Professor Avalon." The Winx girls (Layla's here now) seem to think he's attractive.

And now, FG asks Avalon to destroy the stone. He does with one blast. Bloom is amazed, as FG calls this a "technical incantation". Wondering if Tecna would excel at these incantations?...

Anyways, here's FG's spiel... "What you've just witnessed is a technical incantation. Until now, you've been casting spells spontaneously, following your instincts. Those are the skills you perfected last year. This is a whole new level of difficulty."

Flora asks what's so different about technical magic. FG: "These spells require cognitive analysis, and accurate pronunciation. That's the subject of Professor Avalon's class."

Tecna is next to ask FG. This time, how she determined which technical would effectively destroy the stone. Her answer: She created it. The Winx girls are rather surprised at this, as FG continues: "I wanted to make absolutely sure that you would not underestimate the importance of your new classes." The pixies come out from the behind the girls, and Chatta (for some reason, she's talking quite a bit like Lil DeVille) is PO'd that first the girls were obsessed over the stone, and now the new professor. She's teed off that the fairies have forgotten about them already. She proposes to Digit, Tune, Amore and Lockette, "Whattaya say we ask them to come flying with us over the lake?" The others go "YAAAY!!"

The pixies are now back with their fairies, as FG dismisses the class, but tells the girls that if they have any questions, Avalon will be glad to answer them, and everyone's got a question. Chatta gets bumped off to the side and Bloom runs off from Lockette, and while Tecna is asking Avalon a technical question (of course!), we cut over to Lockette crying to Chatta. "I'm so sad Bloom didn't even notice me!!!" Kiko walks over to Lockette... and then he sticks out his tongue at him, as if to say, "Looks like I'm not the only one who's being ignored around here!" Lockette cries some more, and Chatta looks even more teed off.

We cut back to the group. Amaryl asks Avalon about what cognitive analysis means, but instead of letting Superhunk explain in his own words, we pan over to Bloom and cover the explanation with Bloom's thought processes: "Cognitive analysis... I wonder if this new professor could help me find out more about my birth parents?" Honestly, I think we could have saved that for after he'd explained what it meant. More logical flow, I say! (BTW, I looked up the word "cognitive" in my dictionaries, and it appears under the word "cognition", meaning the act or faculty of knowing. Hmm...)

Musa asks about the language Avalon just used. "It has a fascinating sound." Heh, Musa. Flora asks if the subject is difficult. Bloom asks if Avalon has time to help her do some "personal research". Avalon tells her that he'll be in his office this afternoon, and Bloom says she'll be there. Flora: "But Bloom, we were supposed to hang out today!" After Bloom insists she can't, Chatta flies in, and gives Flora a raspberry :p ;)

Alfea, night time. Messenger continues: "The following evening, there was a party to welcome Professor Avalon. But not everyone was in a party mood." Brandon and Sky are heading over to Alfea on their hoverbikes. Brandon: "Sky, he's just some professor. What are you worried about?" Sky: "Bloom hasn't returned any of my calls. I just want to see what she's up to." Brandon: "We weren't invited... You're not going to crash the party, are you?" Sky: "No... we'll just watch from a tree." The hoverbikes turn left into a forest right next to Alfea. Brandon notices there are two beavers kissing at the base of a tree, and they're not too pleased at the boys' intrusion. As they scurry off, he says, "I think we're disturbing them." No kidding, Sherlock. The two climb up to the top of the tree, and Sky notes the party's already started.

Knut is DJing the party. I didn't know janitors knew how to DJ... There is another desk in the room as well. While Layla is still her casuals, the other Winx girls are wearing more suitable party outfits. Flo expresses her gratitude that Avalon's going to teach here. "We wanted to let you know that we're all eager to study to ready to learn."

Avalon walks over to the desk, and we see that there is a blue bag on it. He takes out from the bag sheets of paper. He sees that the students are impatient, so he's brought with him today, the complete analysis of everyone's efforts against the stone FG made. Tecna and Layla are surprised that Avalon was watching them (yeah, what a creep), and Bloom wants to read the results. Stella stops Bloom, and tells everyone "Last time I checked, this was a party, not a classroom!" Everyone laughs :D :D :D

Later. Sky is spying. We are at the point where Messenger was rudely interrupted by that big-eared bear waaaaay back at the start of the episode. Sky accidentally knocks down a small branch, and it hits a beaver :D "Doh, I think you hit one of the beavers." You think? Duh!

Avalon's office. Avalon is perusing the analysis. Bloom asks, "You do plan on showing us your evaluations right?" Avalon tells her, "You worked very hard." Bloom, however, just wants to see what he wrote about her. She REALLY wants to see it, even as Avalon tells her, "Hey, let me explain before you read it."

Outside, we see two shadows. Sky thinks he sees the professor, but he's not sure it's him (he's right of course). Brandon doesn't see the beavers.

While we're still out we hear the conversation inside. "So, I was almost there?" "Actually..." "One more strike would have done it?" Bloom (and probably the viewers) must be pretty surprised at this reveal, since when after all her shots, she saw the stone still looked absolutely untouched, rather than something that would have taken just one more strike to completely destroy. But let's push that aside. I don't care if you roll your eyes back so far they go back around again. Remember that Bloom has the Dragonfire, so naturally her strikes are more powerful. And she practically bombarded the stone with her fireballs, when everyone else seemed to just give up after one strike. Of course she would have been closer to not failing. (Then again.. imagines Lori typing, "Yeah, but not within one strike :p")

The tree begins to shake. The beavers are gnawing their way through the trunk. Timber!!!

Tree: (CRASH!)
Sky: "Hey, I was just about to see something!!!"
Bloom (cont'd from above): "I knew it. If only I hadn't been so tired!..."
Beavers: (High-fiving over the stump :D)

Minus Bloom's line... Brilliant!

Fade out to Alfea, where Messenger ends the story: "And so, all's well that ends well. And the two beavers lived happily ever after!" All the pixie pets are clapping or whatever, and Messenger says "You've been a wonderful audience!" and blows them a few kisses. Talk about a weird ending.

We fade to a paper doll of Messenger. Kiko has arranged tons of paper dolls into a line. Kiko pushes the Messenger paper doll, and causes them all to fall over like dominoes. Messenger. Piff. Chatta. Lockette. The big-eared bear. Digit. Some pixie pet. Tune. Sky. Brandon. Casual Layla. Party Stella, Musa, Tecna, Flora... and lastly, of course, Bloom. We zoom in on Bloom and she blinks as we iris out.

Yeah, told you this whole thing was weird.

Next, Red Fountain gets a makeover. And the story will be told in conventional manner ;)

Firstly, I like your title better than ours. The Dark Tower bothered me because a) this isn't the Stephen King series and b) it's not a tower.

Looks are not the only basis for matching!

Layla and headphones? Who? Do you mean Musa? Just say MUSA!

"You're right Tecna, this sandwich cost me more than a full facial and a make-up session." I think that's one of the funniest lines I've heard from the original. And that's kinda sad.

I like the family-based magic thingy we've got in the edited way better than pronunciation.

Yeah, but not within one strike. That's too Mary Sue. I'm glad we didn't get that part.

And I am SO glad we didn't get that stupid paper doll show. We're not five-year-olds. Even the target age is more than five. Sheesh.
