This week, Alfea's weakened barrier facilitates Baltor's attack on Alfea, and Faragonda goes missing in action, while Mirta absoultely shines one episode... and disappoints the next. Plus, news from the Winx world, on WinxTalk Podcast #14, with your host SpiderBraids.

But first, Freedom Fighter reviews "Dark Sky".

(BZZ)

It was nice to see an Enchantix in action for the first time, thanks to Layla, but it had to be disheartening to have Bloom see Sky in the state he was in. Bloom was a little too weepy for comfort.

In my opinion, Stella's Enchantix makes her actually look like a ditzy blonde! Before, she only acted like one.

Who knows, though? Her Enchantix could rock just like Layla's. I'd really love to see that.

Best moment of the episode: Seeing Baltor wonder out loud if Diaspro would make a nice addition to the team. If I was Baltor, I'd not go down that road... especially given Darkar's want for Bloom last season. We all remember what that led to...

3.5/5

(BZZ)

And now, on to the current episodes. "Attack of the Zombie Witches" sees Baltor tricking his way into Cloud Tower with a stag, before taking over the student witches for an attack on Alfea, which was facilitated last week with Bloom's ankles weakening the barrier around Alfea.

[3x09: Tecna's gadget has created a hole in the barrier for the Winx to fly through, but Bloom's ankles still touch the barrier as she flies in. Griz says they have weakened the barrier, and adds "There will be serious consequences"]

Serious consequences indeed.

Galatea puts in her first appearance since her briefie back in "Mirror of Truth"...

[3x04: Musa meets Galatea, and Musa describes her planet with beatbox noises]

...and she ends up contributing to the biggest highlight of this episode:

[Galatea's trying to save ancient spell books from the fire the Trix caused. Musa's trying to save Galatea, and she wants Musa to save herself. Musa refuses. Musa gets her Enchantix, and uses it to put out the library fire and re-wing Galatea]

Plus, Mirta. In a fairy outfit. KEWL.

Lori Francz reviews.

(BZZ!)

Everyone was good this week from each Winx girl to the Trix to Mirta to well, EVERYONE.

I loved the simple trickery used in the stag/wolf transformation. Heh. That was great. No big dramatic blow the house down spell, just a simple trick.

I’m amused by how much young Griffin looks like Darcy.

It was nice to see Galatea get a decent amount of screen time. Her fairy form is lovely and I loved the soundwave messages between her and Musa.

The wing plucking was totally one of the best things the witches have done in eons. And it was all Darcy’s idea!

Meanwhile, I liked Icy and Stormy combining efforts in breaking Galatea’s containment bubble and in their ice storm spell.

I love that the Winx screwed up and forgot about Darcy, who lit up the library in retaliation. That’ll teach ‘em to forget about her!

(BZZ!)

Yes, enough with the Trix screwing up time and time again. Roll the tape, maestro...

[1x26: Icy takes the Dragonfire from her sisters, instead of having all three of them gang up on Bloom]
[2x08: Layla shows off her dancing. Darcy snarks at it without disguising her voice, thus blowing her cover easily]
[2x24: Two separate clips show Icy burying the Winx and going back to the UnderRealm, and Darcy doesn't even say a word about how they should stay]

The witches are supposed to be well above cheap mistakes like this. Glad to see that both sides are getting equal cheap screw-up time now.

Back to the review.

Mirta: IN FAIRY FORM. FIGHTING. I really like the hot pink/navy combo for Mirta. It's not entirely fairyish, but it's not too dark either. It's a nice middle ground like she is. I can't see the outfit on a run of the mill background fairy. I love hot pink myself, so it works for me.

Definitely one of the best eps this season.

(BZZ!)

Also, while it was a good day for fans of the background characters, Lori also points out various glitches, mostly minor fairies who were shown casting the barrier spell also helping the Winx fight. Hmm...

"Missing in Action", after the news.

(News sting)

And now, news from the Winx world.

Cynopsis reports that the March 10th Winx, "Attack of the Zombie Witches", scored 0.9 and 5 share, while February 24th's "Dark Sky" scored 0.6 and 4 share.

The upcoming all-CG Winx movie has a website, www.winxclubthemovie.com, where one can view the trailer. It hits cinemas in Italy this December.

Michael Grant reports that the official Winx site is selling the first three volumes of the third season on DVD. Check out the cover art at his site, www.michaelsfavorites.com.

And that's news from the Winx world.

(End news sting)

"Missing in Action" has the Winx girls looking for Faragonda, who had been a victim of last week's Alfea attack, with their search eventually leading them to a Baltor-run Cloud Tower and another fight against the Trix.

But Faragonda isn't the only person missing in action this week. Fairy form Mirta is also MIA. After kicking some serious booty as a fairy last week, she's a witch for all of her screen time this week. So much for seeing a transformation for her...

Lori reviews.

(BZZ)

This episode just did not do it for me. Between Bloom being stupid, Mirta being out of character, the pixies being goofy and other elements, there was just not enough good stuff to balance out the bad.

First off, the pixies did not help this episode. Since we haven’t seen them for so long, I’ve become used to them not being there. Now they just annoyed me with their foolishness. The entire detective scene went on way too long. It seems to be designed to lighten the mood of the darker CT storyline, but it lightened it to the point of ridiculousness. I felt like I was watching a cartoon for babies and became very bored during the pixie sequences.

Why is everyone having such forgetfulness about people that are spelled? We've had some issues with people acting like Sky was spelled and then not. Last week, the fairies said some rather nasty things about the witches, despite knowing full well that they were spelled. Now Mirta’s wondering if Lucy’s spelled. Dude! It’s Baltor! Of course they’re all freaking spelled!

I know this show is about the Winx, but would it kill them to show a few more search parties going to look for Faragonda? What kind of stupid school leaves finding their powerful and important headmistress to only six girls?

One of the only decent things to come out of this episode was the set-up of the Trix competing with each other. I love it when the Trix bicker amongst themselves. This week’s ep set up the ultimate witch-off. I hope to see them fighting each other or at least trying to outdo each other next week. I just hope they make it seem more like an “I want Baltor’s power” angle than “I want Baltor.” The one person Baltor shares his power with better not be Bloom. We did that with Darkar. We don’t need to do it again, especially because of who Bloom is in relation to Baltor.

Flora was decent this week, between doing her funky forest trick to analyzing the FG tree. You know this is totally a set-up though. I mean, FG’s stuck in a tree. Who else is going to save her and likely get a certain special power-up from such actions?

Mirta was okay, but her moments of cowering and then not transforming sucked. Plus, she’s never been upset about being a witch. She knows who she is. It’s totally out of character for her to say she’s a fairy in a witch’s body.

(BZZ)

As for Bloom being stupid, here's the relevant sound clip:

[Bloom sees CT vault monsters with Baltor's mark being hostile to the Winx instead of co-operative: "That's just great! Now they're never going to tell us where Faragonda is"... what the? Hello, Baltor's mark?]

And here's what Lori says about that:

(BZZ)

Note to Bloom: Don’t mope about the vault monsters not being able to help when you’ve got three Enchantix fairies there to heal them.

(BZZ)

Next week, the Winx head to Flora's home realm to find the cure for TreeFaragonda. Should be interesting.

And that's it for another edition. Comments and suggestions can be left at my LiveJournal at spiderbraids.livejournal.com , and the Winx group at Yahoo Groups: tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/winx. We'll see you in two weeks. Thanks for listening.
