WinxTalk Podcast #16
Apr. 21st, 2007 07:59 pmSorry for the lateness... busy week. (In fact, I'm pretty sure the next episode has aired by now.) Anyways, reviews for "Pay Back" and "Island of Dragons". 4.6 megs, 19 minutes.

Feed, for those of you who've got one of those feed-readers.
Transcript
This week, the remaining Winx girls decide to give Baltor some payback over Tecna's disappearance, Timmy gets working on searching for her, and Bloom gets a new Buddy while training. All this, plus news from the Winx world, on WinxTalk Podcast #16, with your host SpiderBraids.
"Pay Back" opens with the aftermath of Tecna disappearing into the Omega Dimension. While the girls are all mourning, Timmy is the only person who believes that Tecna's still alive.
[Timmy tells Riven about how he'd be feeling a void if Tecna really were dead]
We'll pick up on that in the next episode. Meanwhile, the Winx have made a few decisions:
[Bloom decides to disband the group, but not before paying Baltor a revenge visit. Faragonda strongly advises against the latter]
But the Winx decide to go off to Cloud Tower anyway, where Bloom ends up getting frozen with Baltor's new Oppositus spell after he tells her about how he destroyed her parents. Serves them right for defying Faragonda...
Oppositus magic also contributes to the best moments of the episode:
[After The Trix get the CT minions to put jello in their mashed potatoes, Baltor puts a spell on Stormy to make her nicer]
[Spelled Stormy ends up being a traitor when she leads the Winx straight to Baltor]
After the Company of Light and the soon-to-be-ex-Winx pick up the slack and rescue Bloom, Faragonda tells Bloom of a place for her to become stronger:
[Faragonda talks about Pyros, and how it's dangerous with its dragons and stuff]
[Bloom leaves Lockette with Kiko before leaving... "I'm going to come back stronger, or I'm not going to come back at all."]
And, as if the writers had realized that we might forget about the Diaspro situation, last seen in "Operation Boyfriend Rescue", we get an update...
[Stella asks Sky about Diaspro, and we're told that she's been banished after her little stunt]
Let's hope that none of the other ongoing plot lines get resolved offscreen like this one.
Lori reviews.

PROS:
-Timmy rocks. At least someone has the brains and the balls to stand by Tecna.
-Spelled Stormy. Stormy acting in any goody goody way is always funny.
-Darcy spelling the chalk. Ah, I love it when she uses her brains.
CONS:
-Everyone is distraught over Tecna and not a single Winx girl thinks
there's any hope of saving her. What a bunch of emo wussies.
-Darcy cries. I know it's comic relief, but it's still way OOC.
-Diaspro's been banished. YAWN. How boring is that? An unfitting end for a sympathetic character with a lot of untapped potential.
Overall, I did not like this episode. It's pretty sad when not a single Winx girl is likeable. The strongest performance was given by Timmy and the Company of Light. Baltor and the Trix were decent, too, but not as enjoyable as they have been before. Except Spelled Stormy. That was great.

"Island of Dragons" after the news.
(News sting)
And now, news from the Winx world.
The new season of Winx is spreading around the world. After starting in Finland and Netherlands earlier this month, Michael Grant reports that it just started in Singapore on Mediacorp's Central Television, airing on Saturday mornings.
Here are the ratings for Winx Club since the return from the hiatus:
"Dark Sky" scored 0.6 point and 4 share. "Operation Boyfriend Rescue" scored 0.6 point and 3 share. "Attack of the Zombie Witches" scored 0.9 point and 5 share. Lastly, "Point of No Return" scored the highest ratings since the return with a full point, and 7 share.
And that's news from the Winx world.
(News sting)
"Island of Dragons" has FairyBloom finding herself a new Buddy on Pyros. Buddy teaches Bloom a thing or two about how to be a dragon.
[Buddy teaches Bloom how to walk like a dragon, how to eat like a dragon, and how to roar like a dragon. Bloom's going to need a little practice on that last one]
Later, we even get to see something we hadn't seen since the last episode of season 1: FairyBloom releasing her inner dragon!
[Bloom releases her inner dragon and rescues Buddy from the mountain dragon]
In other news, Timmy gets into action on finding Tecna, by bringing in a suit that allows him to program her emotional essence. But he's got a little trouble getting the suit to work.
[Timmy brings in the suit and explains the whole deal about it, and Sky promises to help]
[Timmy's not getting any results just describing Tecna, so Sky calls for some assistance]
[The girls help Timmy with the emotional business, with Musa being the most helpful. Timmy: "I also love the freckles on her ankles. All 34 of them." :-) The sensor finally starts pulsing]
[In the Specs' ship, Timmy sends the signal to the locator by having the remaining Winx push the button with him]
Cute.
Meanwhile, Baltor's gone plundering again. Tell us what you got, Baltor!
[Baltor gives Icy and Stormy orange ponchos, gives Darcy a bracelet, and meditates. The other two girls blame Darcy for ruining him, but Baltor soon shape-shifts into lightning and puts an end to the nay-saying]
Also cute.

This episode nudged Bloom closer to Enchantix and everyone else closer to finding Tecna. At least we know she's not dead. On the good side, Bloom, Timmy and to a lesser extent Musa and Sky were likeable, but no one else made any real impression on me. I do want a plush Buddy though. He's cute.
On the bad side, I love the continually morphing dynamics amongst the Trix. The girls agreed not to fight over Baltor, but they're back at it again. Stormy's turned lazy on him. Wonder if she found out what he did to her last time. Icy's still eager to help, but it's Darcy who wins the day and his approval this time. The new, calmer Baltor is extremely well-suited to the calmest witch and I thought their interactions were well done. Gotta love the present scene! I like how the show is mixing the building threat of Baltor with some comic relief.
So it was a good episode. Nothing spectacular, but nothing horrific either. Good, solid and moving the plot forward steadily.

[The sensor Timmy set up earlier pips and we hear Tecna's voice: "Help me!!"]
Next week, Bloom continues her training on Pyros, while the mission to rescue Tecna from the Omega Dimension gets under way.
That's it for this edition. Since I'm on vacation in a week or so, the next edition will be in 3 or 4 weeks instead of the usual two. Until then, leave comments at my blog at spiderbraids.livejournal.com, or at the Yahoo! Winx group at tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/winx. Thanks for listening.
