For some time, I had been considering making a podcast for fans of Winx Club. In the last week, I finally got down to doing it. I recorded a short piece about Timmy and Tecna, and just today, I signed up for a dibidib account to host my podcasts.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you... the very first WinxTalk Podcast!

The XML feed is here, BTW...

Transcript (with apologies to Lori for quoting her recaps!)

Hello, and welcome to the very first WinxTalk Podcast. I'm your host SpiderBraids, Winx Club fan extraordinaire. Never mind that I'm a guy, I love WC all the same.

Here at the Podcast, we aim to connect all Winx fans together. That's a bit of a lofty goal for now though, so let's just start with things that we've been discussing in the community. Today, we will be discussing an odd couple. No, not Felix and Oscar, but rather Tecna and Timmy. In short... the nerds.

Basically, we hated them when they paired up in season 1. Well, not really, but we didn't accept them as well as, say, Brandon and Stella.

Here's an excerpt from one of Lori's summaries: "Tecna saves Timmy. WHY?!" And here's another excerpt: "Gag me seriously with Tecna's bedroom voice. Um, hello, kids' show?!"

And here's a sample of that so-called "bedroom voice" Lori loves to talk about...

(clip of Tecna saying "Hey Timmy!" to Timmy from the S1 finale)

For the sake of comparison, here's her very first scene on the show, where she shows off her knowledge of Vallisto...

(clip of Tecna introducing herself to Bloom and Stella from the 2nd episode)

Now, where I live, everyone has a different voice from the American version, and Tecna gets a rather calm voice which she uses at all times. No "bedroom voice" to be found here! Here's a bit from "Date With Disaster" as it airs where I live...

(clip from the other dub of the 5th episode, the gist: Musa wants to go out, and Bloom tries convincing Tecna to try dating Timmy)

Okay, enough with the sound clips, now back to the business at hand. In season 2, we've gone from "WHY???" to at least neutral on them. Why, you might be asking? The short answer: Flora and Helia. The long answer: Well, we have to look at how their relationship has evolved. And here's my perspective on the whole issue:

The unedited version has a slightly better take on Tecna and Timmy. In that clip from "Date With Disaster" you heard a couple moments ago, Bloom suggests that Tecna should go out with Timmy. And remember that scene at the end of "Search for the Flame" where Tecna is analyzing data with Timmy, and concludes that the Army is really huge? The actual ending of that scene in the original is different. The numbers Americans saw scrolling across the screen actually skitter out into a heart shape. Guess what Tecna's thinking here?

Now over to S2. Personally, I think there were two issues going on with Tecna and Timmy in the 2nd season. One of course was the conversation in "Homesick" where Timmy gave Tecna a heatsink for her computer, when she was expecting him to discuss about themselves. Incidentally, that conversation airs in a different episode where I live.

The other was Timmy not shooting the Trix in "Reaching for the Sky". Here's an excerpt from Lori's summary for that episode:

"Icy talks Timmy out of shooting them. Icy tells Bloom to dump Sky, who will be asleep for at least a hundred years. Tecna runs off to get help."

Get help? GET HELP??? What kind of help is Tecna expecting to get anyway? She's running off because she can't stand Timmy being such a frellin' coward. Listen to this...

(clip from the other dub of 2x10: Same scene as described above, but we also hear Timmy thinking, "With their new powers the Trix can't be beaten... All we can do is to find a way to beat them before the next battle," and then Tecna is shocked that Timmy isn't stopping the Trix and yells "YOU'RE A COWARD!" before running off)

You will notice that I've added a little echo effect to some of the lines. Those lines were the animated equivalent of Timmy's thought bubbles.

Ironically, earlier in the same episode, this is what Bloom said to Tecna...

(clip from same episode: Bloom points out that Tecna never argues with Timmy, and he would never let Tecna down)

HUH.

Anyways, like Riven and Fake!Brandon disagreeing on who was responsible for Riven's hoverbike crash in "Day of the Rose", although it's not really directly brought up again by any of the characters, it does set the stage for tons of disagreement between the two. The closest Tecna ever comes to referring to this incident again is in "Shadows in Bloom" when she rants to Flora about how Timmy is supposed to be a hero, and then in "Last Resorts" when at the cliff Timmy says that he has a great plan but Tecna replies with a death glare and adds: "Considering your past record, I doubt that's true."

Coincidentally, both conflicts were resolved in the 22nd eps of their respective seasons.

The funny thing is, in "Reaching for the Sky", Tecna is mad at Timmy for letting the Trix make a clean getaway, but in "Last Resorts", Tecna praises Timmy despite letting the Trix make a clean getaway. I'm wondering if this is what Timmy thinks was illogical...

The consensus seems to be that the coupling of the nerds was practically forced on us in S1. In S2, they actually delved into the characters, and gave them some depth personality-wise... and of course, we had a new couple to, er, be unaccepting of. But I guess that's a topic for another Podcast, because that's it for this one.

The next one's in two weeks. You can drop feedback off at my blog at spiderbraids.livejournal.com, or if you're a member of the Winx Club community at community.livejournal.com/winx_club, you can drop your feedback off there. Goodbye!

Behind the scenes

Originally, I was going to call this one simply The Winx Club Podcast, but I decided to switch to WinxTalk Podcast because it sounded more "pod-safe". For those same reasons, I also cut out my planned intro music and a planned exit with "Just Us Girls".

With the name change, I had to re-record the intro (as well as clip down "Here at the Winx Club Podcast" down to just "Here at the podcast"), and since I was at university, I had to record with a different mike from the original. And I'm not exactly the "one-take" kind of pod-caster either. I also ended up re-writing (and re-recording on the different mike) the part after the 2nd clip from "Reaching with the Sky" so as to make for a better flow of thought.

Also, after I had initially uploaded my podcast, Lori emailed me a warning not to bash 4K again, and so, just to be on the safe side, I chopped off one sentence ("See what change chopping off a few seconds from the end of a scene can do?"... ironic huh?), before making one last adjustment (read: de-amplification) to the re-recorded part, before re-uploading and plugging my podcast at the community.

And so, here we are. Ladies and gentlemen, a podcast for Winx fans. Next step... get non-community people to listen to it!
