Winx Club: 3x01: The Princess' Ball
Sep. 13th, 2007 03:40 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Yeah, so new Winx Club started over here last week, so I decided to task myself with summarizing them. Here we go!
"In Alfea, college classes are over. And finally, after a year full of adventures, dangers, and spells, the holidays are here. For Bloom and her friends of the Winx Club, it is time to say goodbye."
Thus begins the 3rd season of Winx, as we open on Alfea, where Stella is busy separating her clothes for her separated parents. She's trying to shuffle what to wear for mom and what to wear for dad, and pondering whether to put a certain red dress in the mom or dad bag. Stella: "Do you know any cloning spells?" Amore: "Uhhh... uh-uh." Musa suggests a very easy solution. "Stop worrying about it and just divide your stuff into half. Then wear whatever you have."
Naturally, Stella says, "You've got to be kidding!" And indeed, Musa, you've got to be kidding. I mean you've been with her for two years now. So surely it would have rubbed off on you some time that she always thinks long and hard about what to wear? New rule: If you've been with someone for more than a year, say, you have to know about his/her little quirks.
On to Flora. Since she's not like Stella, she has her packing job easy: "All the aromagic potions go in the big bag, and all the floral scents go in the small one." Bloom comes in, and she's sad about saying good-bye to Sky. Flora points out that their vacation won't be as long as last years, but Bloom and Sky, despite last seen being all lovey-dovey-dovey, have just had a big fight. Bloom: "I HATE to leave it at that. Maybe I should call him."
On to Tecna and Digit. They have it easy too. "22.4% in this suitcase, and 78.6% in that one. Magisend!" Digit: "Isn't precision wonderful?" Tecna: "A thing of beauty!" Not so wonderful is the writers' math skills... I mean, 22.4 + 78.6 = 101. There's just no way Tecna would make a mistake like that.
Everyone heads outside, and since Musa and Layla are staying here for the summer, they're helping Bloom carry her stuff. Except that there's no need, because Bloom has a nifty spell that allows her luggage to follow her. Musa and Layla are planning on visiting the new beach on the eastern shore and there's a shuttle bus every hour. Layla shows off some of that agility she's known for as she catches Bloom's suitcases, but then Kiko falls on to Layla's face and she knocks Stella's bags open. She of course is teed off at the time she's just now completely wasted on separating her clothes (I would have paid to hear Musa say something like, "Well if you'd just split your stuff into half...") and Bloom tells her that she'll help re-pack... when a message comes in from the sky. It's a Sungram from Solaria.
The messenger in the Sungram announces "The Royal Court of Solaria is pleased to announce our official princess ball," with a picture of S1 Stella. "A princess ball for me? I thought for sure they wouldn't have one..." Bloom asks what this is all about, for the benefit of the viewers. Layla answers, "It's like a coming out party for royalty. It means that a princess is officially entering royal society." Musa: "Back when they had arranged marriages, that's when they'd announce who you were going to marry." Layla: "It's still the case in some kingdoms." Stella: "Yuck, can you imagine?" Take note of that underlined quote. We'll be calling back to that later. But not this week.
Okay, there's an extra message attached to the Sungram, and it's from Stella's dad. Hello, Stella's dad! "You're going to love your party honey, and I'll be making a very special announcement that I am sure will make you very happy." (Yeah, I'll be underlining bits that will have some signficance later on.) Stella is dragging everyone to her party: "A princess ball is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and I want to share it with all of you. :-)"
We head into space. We're on a prisoner transport spaceship. "Don't get any closer, or the ship will freeze." Because we need exposition on this, some prisoner helpfully identifies that they're flying around the Omega Dimension (it's for REALLY bad people), and the crew says, "They say it's so cold there it freezes your heart solid." "Not a thing I'd wish on anyone." Anyways, they're dropping off three pods.
After they hit the ground, one of them bursts open to reveal... Icy, last seen fused with her "sisters" in Megatrix form. "Don't they know my heart is already so cold, nothing can freeze it?" Good question, Icy. Shouldn't an ice-powered villain be sent to, say, Realm de Scorchio or something?
Alfea. The girls are busy re-packing. Digit has just uploaded data to the magiport so that everyone in Stella's facebook will get invites. Timmy and Sky's faces appear. Musa's glad that her dad's holding a princess ball, because not many dads know how to do that. That includes Stella's: her mom's the party planner. This gets Bloom and Stella thinking: maybe mom's in on it, and instead of "King Radius" the Sungram was from "The Royal Court", which is both mom and dad together. This gets Stella excited, because from all that, she concludes that her dad's special announcement is her parents getting back together, so she puts her clothes into one single bag. All this while Tecna, who should be the voice of logic and reason, just sits there instead of saying something like, "But aren't you all just rushing to conclusions?" Stella: "I'm renting a limo! We're going to buy a dress! And you're all coming!" Musa and Layla, as mentioned earlier, wanted to go to the beach, but Bloom is going with Stella.
Omega. Icy de-ices her "sisters". Icy exposits "Only the baddest of the bad get sent here." Stormy: "Sweet. I bet they're talking about us at Cloud Tower!" Meanwhile, the "sisters" see Omega's "security details": snakes with freeze breath. "Not good."
Back with the Winx at Magix Town, where the limo drops them off in front of a pizzeria. Tecna runs off the latest RSVP's: "Riven's coming, Helia (Flora: "Oh goody!"), Brandon (Stella: "But of course darling"), Timmy, Mirta..." (I think I just heard a bunch of squeeing from Mirta-lovers everywhere.) But nothing from Sky. "If he reaches Eraklyon before he receives the invitation, his parents will NEVER let him go." Erm, and what makes you so sure about that, Bloom? I'm wondering if it's either Sky rejecting his arranged fiancee, Bloom's behavior the last time she went to Eraklyon with Sky, or a combination of both. Either way, one is tempted to wonder why his parents really have such a big grudge against her.
Enough about that. Time to head to the pizzeria. Their slogan is "Every pie is good to buy." So they're buying their pizza, when some girl just comes in and grabs it. It'll be another 10 minutes before the next pizza, and Stella's teed at pizza thief. Thief says "Posession is 9/10 of the law!" "Then I'm reposessing it!" Fight! Fight! Fight!
After both girls spell-clean their dresses from the ensuing stainage, we find out that pizza thief (and those two twin cohorts of hers) are Betas. Cohorts go, "Tick tock! Tick tock! Betas rule! Betas rock!" (Take a good look folks, because this is the only episode we'll be seeing those twins of hers. Yeah, I don't get it either.)
"Where is Beta, in the realm of cutesy?" "At least WE'RE not from the realm of dork!" So anyways, Chimera (over here, it's pronounced as shim-MARE-a) is having a princess ball, just like Stella, she and her pals are on break, like the Winx, and they're shopping for dresses, like the Winx. Flora: "It's so nice to meet fairies from another magic school." Chimera: "WHOA. What are you made of, gumdrops and sugar plum pie???" Stella: "Hey, don't diss my girl Flora!" Bloom breaks the girls up for the whole dress buying business. But not before Stella gets off another snipe at Chimera: "Pizza thief, that mud brown is a very good color for you. I suggest you stick with it!" Tecna: "And... snap."
Sigh, the good old days when Chimera was totally made of win. But I always wondered about the whole Beta thing. I mean, Alfea calls itself the only college for fairies in the whole of Magix. Surely there wouldn't be any other places of study for fairies on a par-level with Alfea? Yet that's exactly how the show seems to be treating Beta. Of course, this is all a non-issue, for obvious reasons. (Let's just say that my prediction that the two schools would unite to fight off the season's big menace ended up being woefully wrong.)
Back outside, Musa says that Layla's waiting for her at the beach and leaves. Meanwhile, Bloom and Stella head inside a shop for a fitting. Since we need an excuse to leave the two alone, Tecna and Flora decide to check out the 2nd floor. Anyways, Stella tries out the nifty virtual dresser. "This is great when you're looking for designer stuff. A one-of-a-kind dress can be carried by... a hundred different stores."
To a fantastic electric guitar instrumental, Stella tries a dress. Bloom tries a dress. Stella tries another dress. Bloom tries another dress. Stella and Bloom say random commands to the dresser, and at one point Bloom looks a lot like Jem (yeah, my sister grew up with that cartoon). Eventually they settle on one particular dress, and the dresser tells that that it's available at Boutique Wizrahi in the Western Mall. It happens, however, that the Betas are interested in that particular dress as well, and shove the Alfea fairies and lock them in the virtual dresser as they run off.
Omega. The witches are running from the "security details" around here. Eventually, they end up somewhere with an ice cell. The name tag on the thing reads "Valtor" (with a V, instead of a B), and he was sentenced to eternity. Stormy: "Maybe if we give them this guy, the snakes will leave us alone." Icy takes up Stormy on the idea, and frees Valtor from his cell. He takes the snakes down easily. Icy: "Nice work, goth guy."
The Trix get inquisitive... Stormy: "How long were you in there?" Valtor: "17 years." Icy: "Were you awake the whole time?" "Yup" Darcy: "Whoa, sounds boring." "Gives you time to think." Stormy: "About what?" "About whom you're going to pay back, and how." Anyways, the gang decide to figure out a way to bust this joint, but the Trix give a few pointers first. Icy: "You're cool, obviously packing some power, and if we team up we have a better chance of breaking out of here. But don't give us any orders!" Darcy: "Yeah. That'd be a BIG mistake."
Back in Magix, the girls bust out of the virtual dresser. Stella: "Come on Bloom. Let's go get that dress!" And come on, chase scene! Bloom: "Are you sure this is worth it?" Stella: "I'd really love that dress!" The Betas then start to use some attack spells against the Alfea fairies. Bloom: "They're attacking us over a dress!!!" Stella: "Right, and we're not going to take it!" They eventually manage to cut the Betas off at a zebra crossing, and that gets Chimera mad, and she's flinging attack spells everywhere. Stella: "Look at that, not too good on self control is she?" Indeed. Chimera's causing of lots of chaotic damage. She knocks a branch down. She hits a lamppost. Then she hits the top balcony on the apartment across the street. Where there are puppies in a basket, which falls off the damaged balcony. The girls notice this, and cue the first transformation of the season, at base level. (Actually, it turns out I won't be needing any distinction of level until Enchantix comes into play, but that's for later.)
Bloom casts a safety net, and Stella sends it up with Speed of Sunlight. It catches the puppies, and they enjoy being licked by the puppies.
Boutique Wizrahi. A tired Stella and Bloom are here: "Wizrahi dress, it's red, and it's made of...." "Satin with a lace trim! Ta-ta, Alfea girls!" That's right folks, despite getting cut off at the zebra crossing, the Betas have beaten the Alfea fairies to the store, and the dress. "How could you sell that to her?!? I'm the princess of Solaria and it was for my princess ball!" "Strange. She told me SHE was the princess of Solaria." "Eh?" "Are you sure?" "Aaactually, she said she wasn't yet, but she'd be soon." Keep watching those underlines, folks!
Omega. The gang is at the gate to Andros. "All we have to do is make a little crack in it so I can get my energy out there and take it down." So the Trix shoot at the gate, without any success. According to Valtor, the gate is reinforced with magic. Well, Icy has her ways of overcoming that, and she's luring a snake over to them. Her "sisters" question her moves, but then she lures it straight to the gate, and as the snake attacks Icy, she just deflects its power straight on to the gate, while her "sisters" chip in. "I like your style." "Right back at you Valtor." Okay, now time for Valtor to do his thing!
Watery planet. Hello, Layla's home realm! A bunch of armored mermaid guards see the commotion happening the Omega Dimension Gate. Next thing you know, Valtor's knocking them out and giving them a mark. Stormy: "How do all of these guys get minions?" Icy: "I don't know, but we've got to get some too." Valtor sucks out the mermaids' powers, as we head to the beach.
Magix beach. Layla and some girl who looks like Musa, only with longer pigtails, arrive at the beach. Hey wait, that IS Musa. "Musa, what did you do to your hair?" "A little change of style." Anyways, Stella shows off her new sparkly pink dress. Everyone loves it, of course. Stella: "That's very nice of you, but you should have seen the other one." Bloom: "Stella, you're having a princess ball, your parents are getting back together, and we're on semester break. How could things possibly be better?"
Well, for one, if those three statements really were all correct. Oh yeah, and new rule: If we're given the same opportunity as the characters to pick up on a hint, and we do pick it up, the character should too. I mean, between the pizzeria and Boutique Wizrahi, pretty much everyone and their sister figured out that Chimera was going to somehow be involved at the ball, and some actually guessed what the involvement was. Yet good ol' redhead here has absolutely no clue. Hmph.
And now, back to what really makes things better: The boys dropping by. We get to see the girls getting sweet with their boys. We spend a bit of time with Sky/Bloom. "I thought you'd gone back to Eraklyon" "I was halfway there when I got Stella's invite so I turned around. I wouldn't miss a chance to take you to a princess ball for anything in the world, Bloom." And they've come with food for a cook out and some music.
Layla, who ISN'T attached to anyone (not yet, anyway), notices something wrong. Riven: "I know, I should change the station." But what Layla's really talking about is the ocean, with the bubbles and the huge wave and all. Cue fleeing, and cue transformation! (Musa's has been nicely edited to incorporate the new 'do.)
Everyone converges their base powers on the wave, while the boys help people out of the drink. The girls' power runs out or something as Layla notices a small girl right under the wave. Layla steps up with her nifty powers, creating a surfboard out of her pink stuff, and surfs her to safety.
Sky: "That was refreshing." Heh! The two techies note: "The wave's appearance was an anomaly" "A big-time anomaly." Bloom: "I wonder what caused it?" Layla: "A dimensional shockwave. And that means that something terrible has happened to the heart of all oceans." That big, huh, Layla? Okay, and now a mermaid's just materialized herself in the ocean. She calls out for princess Layla, and says some random gobbledygook, which Layla translates as "Andros is in big trouble." Musa wants to go with her, but that's out of the question because Layla has to go through the ocean. So, that's what she does.
Back on Andros, the minion-making and power-sucking continues. "Our minions are multiplying multiplying. Good work Valtor" "Oh, I'm only just getting started."
And we head into the closing credits. We have a new closing song, and the montage has been updated to include Layla. (Okay, even THAT will be outdated by season's end, but whatev.)
Other thoughts: Well, not much different from the US version, for one. Pretty much all the "hell yeah!" lines are there.
Well, next episode is the one where Stella has her party and all. (As for the grabs from The Witches' Crypt, give me a day or two.)
"In Alfea, college classes are over. And finally, after a year full of adventures, dangers, and spells, the holidays are here. For Bloom and her friends of the Winx Club, it is time to say goodbye."

But what Layla's really talking about is the ocean, with the bubbles and the huge wave and all.

Date: 2007-09-13 12:26 pm (UTC)a) Sky fucked up their probably very carefully arranged marriage plans, which though it's not said, very likely pissed off Diaspro's parents who must be quite powerful themselves. Can we say "potentail war?" I think we can.
b) Bloom's from a dead realm. No dowry there really. (Or they wouldn't know about what is there anyway.)
So are we really wondering anything? Because I know I'm not.
Your Chimera pronunciation is better than ours, as far as making it sound like an actual name goes. Still neither is correct. *sigh*
Did Alfea ever say it was the only school? I don't think it did here. I believe the word was "best."
Okay, is it just me or do both versions have really damn similar dialogue? The quotes you're providing sound an awful lot like the American tone of voice, not the normally stuffier dub.

It probably didn't over there, but here, FG specifically says, "Welcome to Alfea... the best fairy school in all of Magix. Mind you, it's also the only one."

That's exactly one of the things I noticed. Except for minor differences (and the name changes), the whole dialog is for all intents and purposes equivalent to the dub. We even have the "Dolce and Gabbina and Spella McCartney" exchange. Freaky.
Winx Summary Blooper?
Date: 2007-09-14 03:54 am (UTC)Hey, it really should say that "Stella's glad...", not "Musa's glad...", considering it isnt Musa that is having a princess ball, but Stella.
