I've just finished recording the 2nd WinxTalk Podcast and it's a 15-minute doozy (about 3.5 megs), with two topics: The lack of student witch action, and the lack of Musa and Tecna dolls. There's also some news, and due to the time sensitivity of that segment, I'm going to upload it to dibidib around Saturday noon my time (late Friday night US time), after I finish editing it.

See you then.

ETA: Due to techinical difficulties, the podcast won't be uploaded until Monday at the earliest. I just listened to the copy of the podcast I have on my thumb drive (and hence, the one I originally uploaded to dibidib), and for some reason or other, it abruptly ends mid sentence after just over 3 minutes. This means I'll have to do some re-recording too, since the news involves dates for the Feeling Groovy tour, and I recorded the scheds for this weekend and next. So by the time I'm back to upload it, it'll be out of date. Hence, re-recording.

(Sighs) This is the 2nd time out of 2 that I've had to re-upload my podcast.

ETA2: Turns out that the Feeling Groovy Tour takes a weekend off on the first week of September, so all I had to do was deleted the out-dated information, and do a bit more editing. However, this eradicates a slight rant I had that the tour stopped in Atlanta, where the 4K block doesn't air.

And now, the podcast has been uploaded. Check it out!

Hello, and welcome to WinxTalk Podcast No. 2, with your host SpiderBraids. On today's edition: No one likes the student witches of Cloud Tower... not even the animators. Also, we'll be discussing on Mattel's general ignornace of Tecna and Musa in their Winx doll lines. And there's also news from the Winx world. All this and more on today's podcast.

[audio clip from 1x24: Griffin and FG's speech to everyone]

To say that the witches of Cloud Tower and the fairies of Alfea hold a big grudge against each other, is really a bit of an understatement. So when the two rival schools united at Alfea, along with the boys of Red Fountain of course,to deal with the common cause that was defending Magix against the Trix-summoned Army of Decay, it should have been a really big deal, right?

Well, it wasn't as satisfying the event as we thought it would be. There are many reasons that the Great Witch Invasion of '05 fell short of our expectations. One of those reasons... was the fact that the student witches apparently took a runner in those episodes, while the fairies and boys launched their offensive. We saw them come, we saw them leave, but we never saw them fight... or do anything else for that matter. Even when there wasn't any fighting, the only student witch we ever saw in those episodes was Mirta, and even she didn't get to fight. And during the fighting itself, Griffin asked the witches to combine their powers with the fairies to create a forcefield against the Army...

[audio clip from 1x24: Griffin and FG unite their powers for the force field. Both teachers ask their students to chip in. They take out the army.]

And they STILL didn't get any screen time then. There was a shot of the Winx... then a shot of some random fairies... and then another shot of some more random fairies. The witches deserved to appear in one of those shots. As it is though, this takes a lot away from the poignancy of that speech Griffin and Faragonda made about everyone working together. In fact, as you just heard earlier, they specifically mentioned "fairies, witches, and heroes". The fairies got screen time. The heroes got screen time. So, why not the witches?

The lack of witches prompted Lori to comment during "Great Witch Invasion": "Where did the witches go? Is it really so hard to animate them?"

Many others seem to agree. Frank Maggiore rants pretty much the same points in his episode reviews as well and you can read those, by the way, at www.angelfire.com/la3/goldenroad15.

Lori's ranting didn't end with season 1, either. Besides briefly revisiting their absence in "Party Monster", when Lori reviewed "Heart of Cloud Tower", she ranted on the lack of student witch action in this episode thusly:

"Why didn’t the witches help fight the Trix? Where were Ediltrude and Zarathustra during this battle? Ms. Griffin I can understand was probably maintaining her control over the heart, but the other two could have gone out and helped fight. Bad writing. The writers just don’t like to show witches helping fight except for Griffin and occasionally Mirta. And Lucy briefly last episode, though that was more defending herself than outright battling. The witch students never help. Are we supposed to think that they’re weaker than the fairies or are the writers really that worried that if they don’t show the fairies fighting every single battle on their own, we’ll forget about them? This is one of the most unrealistic aspects of the show and it’s very unfortunate."

Very unfortunate indeed.

Interestingly, in the episode previous to this, they actually showed the student witches fighting and casting attacks at the Trix in the Cloud Tower lounge, with Musa and Layla's help of course. Then again, this is the exception that proves the rule.

But anyways, the writers aren't as much to blame as the animators. Lori once said in an email to me...

"What's my problem with the witches not being there? Because most likely they're only not there because the animators are lazyasses. Talking about them fighting and not showing them is pure laziness. Plus, it would have been kickass to see random witches displaying some powers."

True. However, one can imagine that right now, it's not exactly high priority to give the Cloud Tower students a chance in the spotlight. Lori herself said, while expressing her wishes for season 3, "I'd like to see the Cloud Tower students doing something that's useful, yes. But other things are much higher priority."

So, it'll probably be a while before this oversight is fixed.

[News jingle]

And now, news from the world of Winx. This summer, 4K is running its Feeling Groovy Tour in association with Radio Disney at malls throughout the United States. Here are the locations they're headed to next weekend.

On Saturday August the 26th, the Boston area gets a stop at the Square 1 mall in Saugus, while in the area of Indianapolis, home of the Indy, try the Greenwood Park mall in Greenwood. The NYC area gets another Winx stop with the Livingston Mall in Livingston NJ, while Seattle gets their stop in the Tacoma mall in, yes, Tacoma. The Richmond area gets a stop at the Virginia Center Commons in Glen Allen, while West Palm Beach also gets one at the Boynton Beach mall. Yes, it's in Boynton Beach.

On Sunday, August 27th, the Winx are still in Boston, this time at the Northshore Mall in Peabody, and Kansas City area fans can head over to Independence and the Independence Center. Lastly is a curiosity: The Ocean County Mall in Toms River NJ is listed for the New York area, but both Trenton and Philadelphia are closer to this location. The Apple is 79 miles and 85 minutes away, Trenton 40 miles and 55 minutes, and Philly 59 miles and 85 minutes. Confusing yes?

Anyways, all events will be from noon to 3pm local time.

And that's the news from the Winx World.

[news end sting]

[audio clip from 1x10: Icy wants to play with dolls!]

Okay, on to the next topic. Tecna and to some extent Musa have been generally ignored by Mattel when they're releasing their Winx doll lines, while the others get to be in practically every line they release, with good availability too. It's a common complaint among the doll collectors at the community.

How much do they ignore Musa? In December 2005, while playing with the Tecna doll she just got, Lori lamented on another upcoming release in the same doll line, "Poor Musa. The one who should be first is last."

"Now, hang on, since when should Musa be first in a doll line?" I hear you ask?

Simple. That doll line was the Singsational Magic line. A line of singing Winx dolls. Here's a sample of what you could expect to hear from these dolls:

[audio montage: Flora's shower in 2x07, Tecna's nerd rap in 2x05, and a bit from Musa and Stella's duet in 2x15]

So, who better to kick-off the line than the fairy of music herself? She was the most logical flagship for that particular line... and she still managed to get the the short shrift, like in many other of the previous lines, by getting released behind everyone else. So really, the question should be, "What kind of bizarro world is this that Musa is the last in a line of singing dolls to be released?".

Lori has her own opinions on why this is so, namely production problems. But releasing the most logical flagship of that line last isn't the biggest strike against Mattel's Winx dolls. In the most recent lines, Tecna was not even part of the line at all, while Bloom, Stella, and even Flora continue enjoy a good deal of availability, because, according to a post Lori made last Christmas: "Those are the three most popular characters with the target age group, so therefore they're the easiest to get."

Bloom and Stella, I can understand. Flora? Not so much. Wondering if it's the long straight hair that the kiddies like.

Lori also made a few comments over at Toon Zone Forums, pinning the blame on Mattel:

"Mattel doesn't do its research all that well. They give Musa, Tecna and Icy limited releases and flood the stores with Bloom, Stella, Flora and sometimes Layla. The prices on the Pixie Magic Musa, Tecna and Icy were unbelievably high for a time and I'd guess they're still higher than Bloom, Stella, Flora and Layla. People were paying $50-$60 for one $15 doll on eBay. That should prove to Mattel that they need to release more Tecnas and Musas. People will buy them. Musa, at least, has to have risen in popularity with the kiddies. I've also heard children in stores complain when they can't find the "cute pigtailed one" or the one with the "pretty purple hair." Though honestly what irks me most is that Mattel won't give us anything but the fairies. Pixie Icy got a small release, but based on ToyFair pictures, there are no Darcys or Stormys or more Icys in our future. That makes me sad. (And very thankful that the Italian doll company made them!)"

Honestly, if Musa can't get released first, or even ahead of any of the others, in a line of singing dolls, AND at a time where her character seems to be at an all-time popularity high to boot, what hope do Musa fans have of getting a doll of their favorite pig-tailed fairy? Most likely, auctioning on eBay. Despite her new popularity, Musa's availability continues to be generally lower than that of the three "popular" characters. Not only does Musa suffer from being released last in the Singsational Magic line, but also she's still rare, which is not a good thing when you consider that she should be the flagship of this line instead of the usual Bloom and Stella.

As for Tecna, Lori had this to say...

"It's a shame they don't do more with Tecna on the show. Maybe in the third season, she'll have a nice episode that she can star in where she looks good, instead of where she jumps to conclusions."

This of course refers to "Angel of Doom", where Tecna attacked Avalon based on a logical conclusion she made that Avalon was said Angel. The Avalon she attacked turned out to be a fake later in the season, which creates a few inconsistencies, which I'll probably address in a later podcast. But anyways, Lori continues...

"She didn't get a lot of screentime this season. There were numerous episodes where she either didn't appear or only appeared for a couple minutes. I can understand why kids wouldn't like her much. They don't know her that well! It's sad, since I think she's actually the prettiest Mattel doll. Her hair is really well-done and I love her makeup and the shape and color of her eyes. I think she pulled off the open mouth of the Singsational line better than any of the other girls, too."

It must have been a terrible year to be Tecna. First her very logical method of thinking was proven wrong, not just once with the Avalon incident, but again at Cloud Tower; then her assigned boyfriend Timmy let her down not only during an attack at Red Fountain, but also at a breakfast talk, and then she got marginalized in general, and although she did finally get the major role in an episode, that was when she ended up getting egg on her face with the Avalon incident. And now, Mattel won't even make dolls of her. And I thought Layla was feeling left out.

More recently, there was another discussion concerning another Winx doll line, the Magic Makeover Pixies. One pixie was left out entirely. That pixie was Digit. Who is bonded to Tecna. Coincidence?

While Lori saw the lack of Digit in the line as a good thing, since the dolls themselves weren't exactly pretty with their big pink lips, Lori chewed them out even further for the general lack of Musa and Tecna dolls:

"Mattel sincerely lacks logic and apparently also the capability to do research. I thought they were going to do a good job with Winx, but my opinion of them has been in a definite downward spiral. The dolls they produce are nice (barring these pixies), but they're afraid to take chances. Mattel's got plenty of money and should be willing to take a chance and make people happy. Italian Darcy and Stormy sell well on eBay. People are willing to pay $40 and $50 for these characters. Mattel should capitalize on that and make them!

Who do you see sitting on the shelves most often? Bloom, Stella and Flora. Who sells out? Tecna, Musa and Layla. Yeah, there are more of B, S and F, but if no one wanted the other characters, they would still be on the shelves and they're not. I've seen one Singsational Tecna lately and that's it for Tecna, Musa and Layla.

I don't know. Maybe logic doesn't apply to the toy world. But I'm tired of them making less and less of what I (and other collectors) want."

The result? Skyrocketing prices for the dolls on eBay. ddrfan posted in July that as recent as April and May, Singsational Tecna was going for $30, while Pixie Magic Tecna was going for $50, and even posted a link that showed a Pixie Magic Musa doll being auctioned off at eBay for $125. These are for dolls that generally retail for about $15, I might add.

Hey, Mattel, you listening? Make more Tecna and Musa dolls. Pronto! There are lots of kiddies who like these characters, you know...

Well, that's it for another Podcast. As usual, the next one's in two weeks. And as usual, you can drop feedback off at my blog at spiderbraids.livejournal.com, or if you're a member of the Winx Club community at community.livejournal.com/winx_club, you can drop your feedback off there. Thanks for listening.

Behind the scenes

I created the MP3 of my finished editorial just before I left university on Friday afternoon, copied it to my thumb drive, and added the ID3 tag back home using WinAmp. I uploaded on Saturday noon local time here (which is late Friday night) so that I could get the news out in time for the Feeling Groovy tour. It wasn't until after I had uploaded that I found trouble in the podcast. I was listening and decided to listen to the part on dolls... and it wouldn't load. In fact, loading the file in Audacity revealed that it stopped after about 3 minutes during the first part, even though the file info said it had a runtime of 15:25 (which was what I had expected). Since I had tagged it on the thumb drive I carried the MP3 on (and untagging it didn't restore the audio), I had no recourse but to wait for Monday. Funny thing is, on the un-tagged edition at uni, the whole 15:25 was intact! I have no idea how this happened, but point is, somehow, the tagging made it lose like 12 minutes of the audio.

So, when I came back on Monday, I had to quickly make some edits, re-encode, re-tag, and re-upload. Just like the witches at the end of 1x10, I won't stew on how this could be, but I'm hoping that I'll get the Podcast uploaded correctly at the first go next time.
