Winx Club 3x15: The Island of Dragons
Aug. 8th, 2008 07:42 pmPreviously on Winx Club: After the Tecna tragedy on Andros, the remainder went to CT for payback. There's bad news, and good news. Er, maybe just bad news and bad news: Bad news is that Bloom found out that Val killed her parents (or did he?) and has gone to a VERY dangerous island to become stronger, well, if she doesn't become dragon food first. The other news is that Diaspro has been banished, thus snuffing out any chance of her getting her payback againts Bloom. It's good news if you're Bloom, bad news if you've been following Diaspro's plight.
We open at nighttime Alfea, where Bloom's roommate Flora has problems sleeping. And so does Stella, because she's entering Flora's room.
Stella: "Oh, I can't sleep."
Flora: "Me neither. I just can't stop thinking about Bloom."
And then the other remaining girls come in.
Layla: "Oh, thank goodness you're up."
Musa: "I guess you couldn't sleep either huh?"
Stella: "If Bloom doesn't come back from Pyros I think I'm gonna" Flora: "Stop thinking about that. We've got to stay positive." Oh, so NOW you're trying to stay positive without your designated team leader, when you were talking about disbandment after losing one of your lesser-profilic members? Hello?
Stella: "Easier said than done. She's all by herself on that creepy island!"
Layla: "An island full of dragons."
Flora: "I think Bloom was very brave to choose to go there."
Musa: "Well, let's hope she gets stronger so that when she does get back she can help us defeat Valtor."
And for some reason, we hear Stella think, but not say: "C'mon Bloom, everything will be alright."
Remember what I said last summary about the writers and animators creating a new realm to serve the story when they never showed Tecna's homerealm? Well, it applies again this week, since we now fade in on some island, filled with forests and volcanic cones. We close-up on one of the cones, which erupts. Yeah, we're on Pyros. And we then see Bloom materialize, in her Winx form, in a forest clearing. We see her look around the area. We see her notice that her heart is beating harder and faster now (accompanied with an extreme close-up of her Winx top, seriously; I imagine it would make a bit more sense with her Charmix heart pin...). And then, we hear dragon noises, and next thing you know, some dragon bears down right on Bloom, knocking her to the side.
Bloom gets up, and as the dragon bears down on her again, she fireballs the dragon down on to the ground.
She takes a breather, but next thing you know, now there are THREE dragons bearing down on her. The dragons start gliding, and she starts running. Yeah, even though she's got wings. Anyhow, she keeps on running and running. One of the dragons decides to strike, and Bloom finally puts her wings to good use by somersaulting over the dragon and hovering. Bloom strikes an "OH yeah!" pose... and then gets blindsided by one of the flying dragons right into a lake. The dragon hovers right about the lake, before sticking his head into the drink to look for Bloom. Yeah, bad idea. The face Bloom makes right before blasting the dragon is sweet.
She puts her head above the surface and sees the third dragon. She gets out of the lake and runs straight into the forest, and it's too narrow for the dragon, so he emits his fiery breath and sets the forest on fire, as Bloom runs herself into a hole. Literally.
And we take a break from Bloom's Pyros escapades and head to RF. We see Timmy walk into the Specs' room with... a scarf?
Timmy: "I've figured it out! I know how to find Tecna."
Sky is with the other Specs, bar Helia: "Wha... Timmy?"
Timmy explains: "You have to see this. I upgraded a satellite locator by adding an emotional sensor."
Brandon: "Saladin was just here; he wanted to know how you were doing, Timmy."
Sky: "He's worried about you."
Riven: "We told him you're okay, but to tell you the truth, we're not so sure." Heh.
Timmy: "I'm fine, alright?" Insert reactions from Sky and Riven here.
Timmy: "I know I haven't been acting logically lately (Me: 'Zing'), but I have this really strong feeling that Tecna is still out there guys, and she's going to try to get in touch with us." The others have somewhat blank reactions, as Timmy holds up what looks like a string with a bead at the end: "All I have to do is to find a way to get this sensor to recognize Tecna's emotional essence and then I'll find her. But I'm going to need some help."
Riven is disinterested. "Sorry, Timmy, but I've got to study for that Advanced Rescue exam." Brandon: "And I've got detention. I broke curfew last night to hang with Stella. Sorry, buddy." That leaves Sky: "I'll help you." This makes Timmy perk up.
And we fade to CT, where Val is asking himself: "Why am I unable to morph?" Interestingly enough, the Trix are still here, as Stormy stands in for the viewers: "What's it matter if you are?" Val: "If I'm unable to morph, I'll never be able to inflitrate the Primary Dimension. And I need that power to conquer Magix." (When I first saw this, I thought Val had said "Binary Dimension", which made me "aargh" a little inside, because I thought Val was going to Tecna's homerealm, AFTER she had gotten her Enchantix.)
Icy: "Well, I can help you."
Val: "I've been looking for a solution all day, but I just can't seem to be able to focus intensely enough. So many distractions."
Darcy: "Oh, you're probably just tired. Trying to become the greatest wizard of all time is hard work. Why don't you try conquering another world? It'll relax you." We see that Icy doesn't seem to pleased about Darcy's comment.
Val: "I think that's a great idea. You really do get me Darcy."
We have Icy thinking: "Ew, no one gets you more than I do..."
Val opens a scroll, and Darcy points out a planet: "See that planet? That's where you need to go. You'll have the chance to take their magic, chill out, and you'll come back relaxed and ready to rumble." We see Stormy on her chair.
Val: "Right. Planet Chill. That's where I'm headed."
Icy and Darcy shield themselves from the bright light of the portal, and then Icy decides to chew out Darcy: "No but really, how can he listen to YOU?"
Darcy: "Hey, you heard what he said. I'm the one who really gets him."
Stormy chimes in: "You two are really pathetic. You're practically throwing yourselves at him, just so you can get a teeny wee bit of attention."
Icy and Darcy: "Who are you to talk?"
Stormy gets off her chair, and knocks it over (HEH): "Oh get real! I am so totally over him it's not even funny!"
And the others witches laugh like crazy, while Stormy looks indifferent. So I guess they've officially abandoned Stormy's crush on Valtor? AND they still haven't settled who Val's going to share his power with? Suddenly, the outlook for the rest of the season isn't looking so good...
And back to Pyros, where Fairy Bloom has knocked herself out running into a hole. We see Bloom's dream, where she's also in her fairy outfit.
Bloom is a sea of nothing but white: "Uh... where am I? I'm lost..."
And who should pop out of the white but her sister? Long time no see, Daphne! "Bloom, remember where you come from. And you'll know where you're going."
Bloom: "I'm here to get stronger, but I don't know how."
Daphne: "Look within. Find the dragon."
Bloom: "Which dragon?"
Daphne: "YOUR dragon."
Daphne recedes back into the white, leaving Bloom asking, "Wait, where do I look?"
And Bloom wakes up, and comes face to face with a dragon. A teensy-weensy dragon, that is. Bloom: "AAAH!" TWD: "AAAH..." Heh!
Bloom: "Who are you?"
TWD: "I'm Buddy!"
Bloom: "Hi, Buddy, nice to meet you."
Buddy: "What are you doing on Pyros?"
Bloom: "Well, I'm a fairy. And I'm here to try to get stronger I guess..."
Buddy: "How are you gonna do that?"
Bloom: "I don't know yet..."
Back to RF, where we find out what Timmy was carrying in earlier. It's a full-body suit, and Timmy is now wearing it (it looks nice on him, BTW), as he hooks up sensors on his left glove to the computer before hitting a button on the glove, putting up a picture of Tecna on the screen.
Timmy: "I uploaded this image of Tecna so that the locator knows what she looks like. Now I have to make it understand who she is." (Incidentally we see him pointing at the screen with his other hand and we see that it isn't gloved.)
Sky: "Go for it." Timmy taps the keyboard with his ungloved hand and starts dictating: "Tecna's IQ is 150. She excels at math. She's also a senior member of the Technomagic Society..."
The button on his glove has turned into a waveform graph thing. Timmy: "It's not working. If it was, Tecna's image would send back me emotional impulses." Sky: "*sigh* Timmy, listen. If anyone's going to make this contraption work, it's gotta be you, but you have to describe Tecna's nature. You'll have to be more emotional."
Timmy: "Yeah, you're right, here goes." He taps the keyboard again. "Tecna is my friend. (Insert Sky's meh reaction here.) Um.. she's a nice girl and a wonderful person."
We hear a busy phone signal as Sky says, "You know, I think you should try to get more in touch with your emotions Timmy; dig deep into your innermost feelings." Timmy: "How am I supposed to do that?" Sky brandishes his cell: "Whattaya we call someone who knows all about this stuff huh?" And Timmy looks a bit awkward.
And back to Pyros with Buddy. Bloom: "Where's your home Buddy?" Buddy: "In Molten Creek." Bloom: "Where is that?" Buddy: "It's up at the top of Fire Mountain."
Bloom notes that Buddy seems a bit sad: "What's the matter?" Buddy: "I got separated from my parents and I really wanna get back, but I'm... too scared to go by myself." Bloom: "Hey, don't cry; I'll go with you!" Buddy: "Really?? Thank you!" He says "Thank you" three times, actually.
And we head to yet another new locale. Mountains. Fountains. Flowers. Sorta-Chinese influenced building. Woman saying "Fengshui-nus" to arrange her furniture. Bird singing. Kid in a meadow saying "What a beautiful song!" and mimicking the bird.
And here's Val: "There it is. The source of all their magic." We're shown a shot of banners hanging from a long stick, fluttering in the wind like wind chimes. How... Asian. Val heads down.
We're shown guards meditating and levitating (medi-levitating?) around the banners. Val: "If a monkey falls into a fountain, does it make a sound?" One of the guards gets up and runs towards him, and we see that he is indeed a monkey. Val: "Let's find out, shall we?" And he blasts the monkey into the fountain. The other guards take notice, and we're about to get a decent fight scene. Well, by S3's low standards anyway.
Three guards jumps up into the air, and Val blasts one guard, throws his cape on to another (I kid you not), and knocks another guard over with his hands. A guard shoves him on to the ground and he goes after Val with this sword. And he rolls away from the stab twice. And get this: when he rolls away the 2nd time, they just reverse the footage of the first rollback (complete with smoke plume going backwards!) And then they show Val rolling in to make a blast... twice. Talk about your cheap animation here. Anyways, he blasts the remaining guard monkey, and then the fountain. He walks up to the two banners hanging from the stick and takes their magic... and they fall off the stick, making a nice crash sound. Heh.
And just like on other planets, the clouds come out. We see the kid in the meadow from earlier throwing a rock at the bird ("Put a sock in it you!") and the Fengshui-nus woman from earlier (get this) being chased by her furniture (although the furniture doesn't get really far). We see Val medi-levitating, while explosions are happening behind him (heh), and he teleports off.
We head back to RF, where Timmy is no longer wearing the suit from earlier (except for the glove hooked up to the computer) and Sky is greeting the remaining fairies and asking them, "Do you think you can help Timmy here get in touch with his innermost feelings?" Musa: "Well can you be more specific?" Heh. Take it away, Timmy...
Timmy: "I have to make this machine understand what is the nature of Tecna's emotional essence. And the only way I can do that is by expressing my true inner feelings about her."
Layla: "So you still think we can find her? You still think she's alive?"
Timmy: "I'm totally positive that she is, but I need your help. Please?"
We see Musa, Flora and Layla nod, while Stella goes over to Sky and coughs, and he knows what that means: "Okay, I'll leave you guys alone."
We look at the computer screen with Tecna's face on it as the Q&A gets underway:
Musa: "Timmy, how do you feel when you're with Tecna?"
Timmy: "I feel good, I just love the way she is."
Layla: "And what do you love about her?"
Timmy: "Everything!"
Stella: "That's a good start. Now, try being... a little more specific alright?" HEH.
Musa: "I have an idea Timmy: Close your eyes." Timmy seems skeptic about this, but complies anyway. "Now, focus on one of your memories of Tecna. She's right there in front of you. What is it you really love about her?"
Take it away, Timmy: "Well, I love that she can add numbers in her head, no matter how large; I love that she always beats me at video games and never apologizes for it; I love that she laughs at all my jokes even though I know my jokes are never that funny..." We see images of Timmy and Tecna as he says all this. Okay, I can totally believe the first two, but when was the last time we ever say Timmy joking with Tecna?
Musa: "She must really like you." Uh... duh, she confessed that in the Wildlands?
Timmy: "Ah, and she's not just my girlfriend; she's my best friend."
Layla: "You really love a lot of things about her..."
Timmy: "Yeah, and I'm totally in love with her..."
We see Timmy tear up, and we see Stella smiling. And then she turns over to the computer screen from earlier, as the radar monitor in the top right corner starts flashing. Stella: "You did it Timmy!" Timmy: "The machine works!" Yeah, good for you.
Fade to a waterfall. Yep, back on Pyros again, as we rejoin Bloom and Buddy.
Bloom: "I don't know why I couldn't take down those Wideburns."
Buddy: "To beat a dragon, you gotta be a dragon and use your fire."
Bloom: "How does one become a dragon?"
Buddy: "Easy; follow me, do what I do!"
Bloom: "Uh, okay!" Hee.
We see Bloom's boots walking past Buddy, and he's already finding fault with that: "No see, you can't just walk."
Bloom: "But that's what you're doing."
Buddy: "You have to walk like a dragon. Let me show you."
We see Buddy do his walking, and we see Bloom giggling. Hee! Buddy: "Now you try it!"
And Bloom looks completely awkward with her arms all spread out swinging up and down. HEH! Buddy: "C'mon, walk like you mean business!" We're shown a bunch of other Pyros creatures which look a bit like triceratops. "See those guys? You gotta show them who's boss. Shoulders back, head up, c'mon get your swag on! Now go."
Bloom walks towards the creatures. She stands in front of them, and the creatures run off. Buddy: "Good job!" Bloom: "I can walk like a dragon!" Buddy: "Now you must eat like one." Bloom: "HUH?"
We're shown a fly on some flowers. We're shown Buddy using his tongue to grab and eat it like a frog. Bloom: "Gross!" Buddy: "Now you try it." Bloom: "No way!" Buddy: "You wanna be a dragon?" Bloom: "I don't have a choice do I?"
Bloom looks at the bugs while Buddy's eating his grubs and decides: "I can't. Isn't there a vegetarian menu?" (Silly dialog, but it works.) Buddy: "Alright, I guess so." We see Buddy fly over to a very thorny looking plant. "The thornbush berries are the only fruit on the island. They're delicious but a little hard to pick." And Buddy demonsteates this by flying right into the bush to grab a berry, and we see vines wrap around Buddy's arms. He grabs the berry and breaks off the vines, before coming out to eat his fruit. We're shown a close up of Buddy's hand, which has lots of spikes sticking out. Ouch. And apparently Bloom agrees: "Doesn't that hurt?" Buddy: "No, not really." Bloom weighs her options and decides: "Maybe I should try that mosquito." Buddy doesn't think so: "Uh-uh, too late. Be the dragon, Bloom." "Oh, alright! Here goes!"
Bloom's arm dives straight into the bush and immediately runs into wrapping vines. I hope those fairy gloves of are protective against the thorns... We see her arm struggle for a bit, before Bloom declares: "I got it!" Unlike Buddy getting a whole handful of berries, we see Bloom getting a single berry with her thumb and index fingers. Buddy: "Hey, you can eat like a dragon now. Nicely done!"
We're shown a shot of the Pyros forest, before fading to some rock cropping. Buddy: "Alright. Now that you can walk like a dragon and eat like a dragon, you've got to roar like a dragon." And he demonstrates. Bloom: "Hey, that was great." Buddy: "The trick is, you have to feel it. It's somewhere inside you. It's like screaming, or crying, or laughing. It comes from the same place." Bloom: "I want to try it!" Bloom's attempt sounds like she's wincing in pain. "That was lame." I agree, Bloom. Buddy: "Roaring's tough. It takes time." Bloom: "I'll try again!" This 2nd attempt sounds much better. Buddy: "You're almost getting there." Bloom: "Thanks. Let's keep practicing."
We freeze-frame Bloom and fade to an RF ship. Timmy is back in his suit: "Now, according to my calculations, once the machine sends its signal to the satellite locator up in space, we should be able to find Tecna, within minutes." Stella: "This is so complicated. Realm-burying her would have been much quicker don't you think?" We see Sky press a button and say "All set." Timmy: "Okay!" Timmy is getting ready. Stella: "What are you waiting for, Timmy?" Timmy: "Somehow, I think we should do this all together." Musa: "You mean, to bring good luck?" Timmy: "Yeah, all of us who care about Tecna should do this together." Flora: "Great idea!" And with that, we see five hands pressing the same button on the RF console. Timmy: "One, two, three." And we see the RF ship fly off.
Timmy being superstitious. Not something you see every day.
We head back to Cloud Tower, where the Trix are busy idling themselves when Valtor returns from his pillage. The first person to say anything is Darcy: "Wow, you're glowing." Not literally, I mean. Val: "I acheived inner peace and I brought gifts." And with that, Val zaps Stormy and Icy into Mexican-style capes. Stormy: "Ohh, this is hideous, ew!" Icy: "Hey! Change us back!" Val: "You look good ladies. These collars are proven to have a calming effect." Sorry, Val, but I kind of agree with Stormy. Val continues with his spiel: "And as for you..." He zaps a bracelet for Darcy: "That's hematite. It wards off negative energy. Thought you could use it around those two." HEH! Icy's reaction: Priceless. And we see Val take off his coat, and throw it over Stormy's head. HEH again. And then Val goes off to meditate and conjures up a fountain. Stormy: "What, are you meditating?" Val: "When you relax the mind, you also relax the body. Now I'm going to figure out how to morph." Icy: "Well you're a bit too chilled now. This is all your fault, you ruined him!" Not as much as the writers have ruined this season (ZING!) Darcy: "I like him like that!"
We hear Val saying "Metamorphous" twice, and we see a ray zing out from him and bounce off the wall. Erm... Stormy: "Whoa, was that you?" Icy: "Sweet." Darcy: "Awesome!" Val: "Now nothing can get in my way."
And back to Pyros! We hear Buddy and Bloom over shots of volcanos and such: "This is it, Fire Mountain! Are you ready?" "Yep." "This mountain has the fiercest dragons on the island, and tarpits in which hundreds of creatures have disappeared. Are you sure you're ready?" "Absolutely! C'mon, let's get you home Buddy."
Shot of a lava river. We see Bloom running, before stopping when she hears something. She thinks it's a false alarm... before she realizes she's standing on top of a dragons. Buddy: "It's the mountain dragon. It only wakes up if there are intruders." Bloom: "We have to be very quiet." Buddy: "Remember, be a dragon." Bloom: "Alright, c'mon." And then, on practically her first step, she trips over one of its spikes and makes it wake up. Whoops!
Mountain dragon makes a shifty look and starts swatting around with his tail, knocking over Bloom, before grabbing Buddy. Bloom gets back up and starts running again: "Hold on Buddy!" She flies up, she puts her hands out to cast a spell... and gets tail-swatted again, this time into a tarpit. Buddy: "Bloom! Help me!!" Bloom climbs out of the pit and makes a running take-off, but the fact she's all tarred up poses a problem. "My wings! I can't fly!" Buddy: "Bloom! Help! I don't wanna be lunch! HELP!!" (HEH.) Bloom repeats to herself "Be a dragon." She jumps up again, this time freeing herself of the muck. And cue Charmix music as she bears down on the dragon!
We see Bloom starting to roar and concentrating and forming a glow around herself. And then, we see something we haven't seen since late in season 1: we see Bloom's fire energy dragon emerge, and we see Bloom roaring just like she did earlier. Bloom comes up right in front of the mountain dragon, and seeing what he's up against, the dragon runs off, dropping Buddy. And Bloom swoops in for the catch. Nice catch! Bloom: "Hey, are you okay?" Buddy: "You did it!" Bloom giggles and looks around: "It went back to sleep. How come?" Buddy: "There are no more intruders. You're a dragon now."
And fadeout to RF, where Tecna still hasn't been found. How inconvenient... Sky: "We should have heard something by now." Timmy is still in his suit: "Just give it a little more time." Stella: "You said we'd be making contact within minutes. It's been hours!" Flora: "We have to get back or we'll miss curfew." Timmy: "It's alright. You guys go, I'll just sit here. I... can't leave." Flora: "I'm so sorry it didn't work out." Musa: "Yeah. No kidding." (Her 4K line: "Yeah... Mega-sorry." Bleh.) Layla: "We're here for you Timmy. Anything you need." Stella produces a funny line: "You know... I can get you into the royal spa. A getaway might do you good." Timmy: "Thanks." The idea of Timmy soothing off in a spa... HEH. Might make a fanart of that. Sky decides to walk the girls out, leaving our bespectacled Specialist alone. And with that, we head into a song, with clips of great Tecna and Timmy/Tecna moments from episodes gone by...
"Don't be afraid / I'll be right there / An angel will keep you from sorrow / Our pleas will grow softly / Whispering gently that you're not around / There will always be a place where you can find me / And it won't be long / You'll wake up strong / And night will give way to a better day / Never be alone."
We see clips like Tecna playing games with Digit, Tecna walking in the halls of Alfea, Timmy offering her that thingy for her computer, Tecna and Timmy's sweet scene in the Wildlands, her transformation, Tecna trying to get Timmy to fire at the Trix, Timmy rejoining Tecna during the S2 finale ("OK, then let's move out!" "You two say the same thing all the time now" HEH!), and Timmy and Tecna playing games at the end of the same episode. (Unlike the 4K version, we don't hear any dialog, original or otherwise, in the clips.) Timmy has fallen asleep, in his suit, and right at the computer table, by the end of this little song-montage thing, so he isn't aware of Tecna signaling the locator ("I'm... here! Help me!") and making his computer go off like crazy. Why it took hours and not minutes to find Tecna doesn't get explained, but I imagine that "It's the Omega Dimension" will probably suffice as an answer for some. Anyway, how inconvenient.
And we, uh, fade to a lava river. We're back on Pyros, where Bloom and Buddy are still running. Buddy: "Ah, here we are. Molten Creek." We see a big-@$$ river of lava flowing past a bunch of cones. Bloom: "There's nothing here. I thought this was your home." Buddy: "It is." Bloom: "Huh?" Buddy: "I'm your dragon. And now I'm home." (Sarcasm on) Wow, what a twist! (Sarcasm off)
Bloom holds Buddy close, and a bright light appears, and considering the next episode, I imagine that animators intended that as Bloom somehow fusing with Buddy. But after we hear Bloom say, "Yes, I found my dragon" we can still see Bloom holding Buddy, as a dragon sneaks up from behind her, and the last thing we see is the dragon breathing fire.
Bloom's Pyros adventure ain't over yet, folks.

Darcy: "Oh, you're probably just tired. Trying to become the greatest wizard of all time is hard work. Why don't you try conquering another world? It'll relax you." We see that Icy doesn't seem to pleased about Darcy's comment.
