The Amazing Asia returned for its third season this past week, and we've got the scoop.

Okay, so this year saw the race open in Bangkok (my hometown! :-) ) at the King Rama 1 statue, with the first task at Khaosan Road (former rice market, now backpacker's paradise!) eating a local delicacy... which turned out to be fried bugs. Gee, now where have I seen that before...? Cue eating, puking, and Pailin/Natalie (one of Thailand's two teams; with one of them being a former Miss Universe no less!) commenting, "Who says beauty queens don't eat bugs?" Heh. Next task, go clean a vehicle at a Caltex station. Deja vu, since every season so far has had this task, except it's double deja vu since the vehicles turned out to be buses, so... yeah. At least there was some rain to help them.

Next stop, reserve seats on buses to go to some temple in Suphanburi. Except that Mai/Oliver (the other Thai team, and the first real regular Thai team to compete, since they're university students) didn't notice that they were supposed to reserve them at the pump until they'd been in their cab for a while. Whoops!

Okay. Temple. Night time, and contestants had to go look for envelopes amongst iamge Buddhas in the dark. This also had the effect of separating the teams a bit, since anyone who got an envelope less than 20 minutes after getting to the temple would then take the same to Chiang Mai, while other teams would have to wait for the next available bus. Result: 2 teams on bus 1, 1 team on bus 2, 7 teams on bus 3.

Chiang Mai now, and we have a detour, either between (Rice) pounding rice into sticky blobs, or (Race) driving buggies. Initially one team went for it, but then the two India teams switched from pounding rice to driving.

Pit stop was at the Ratchapreuk garden, to which I say, "Ooh ooh! I've been there!" Mai/Oliver worked a deal with a Phillipine team to play rock-paper-scissors to decide first place, and they won the leg, along with 2 $2500 credit cards post-race. And who should be greeting them but Paula from last season?

Congratulations for the being the first Thai team to ever win a leg, Mai. Um, what's this? You're bickering with your partner for not carrying your bag? I can see where this is going...

Okay, back to the race, and cropping up the rear were the two Indian teams, with two cousins from New Delhi getting eliminated. Won't miss them. Nice to have you back, race (and in two weeks, the US race also starts again).
