Ladies and gentlemen, let the Winx S2 recaps begin.

Okay, it's a brand new season of Winx, and for some reason, we get a recap of the previous season's finale. Eh?

And we start in some land dominated with an upside down castle thingy with some random dark-skinned lady with bright pink lips climbing some cliff. While she's hiding from a bunch of monsters, we see two weird cells, and inside one of the cells are some little fairy-like thingies. The one with the pigtails is trying to come up with a plan to escape the cell, and it seems to involve herself, "Digit" and "Piff" switching positions and converging to produce an unexpected impact on the wall, or something like that (the fairies will get to this "converging" business much later). We get a good look at each of the thingies as some of them are talking this plan out (one in baby clothes is sleeping, another has roses on her hair, another with lavender hair asks about elegance). Here's the exact dialog, see if you can make any sense of it:

Pigtails: If I go up to the left the power will... wait, wait, wait. If I say three, she will turn, magic will converge... yes that's it! (...unintelligible...) If we pull this off, I'm absolutely sure we can finally escape from this dreadful place.
Roses: Oh well. I really hope it's better than your first biggy ideas.
Pigtails: Digit and Piff will stop mid-a-way to the sides. Digit to the right and Piff to the left. I'll count to three, and we all switch positions and converge to produce an unexpected magical impact on the wall!
Lavender: But will the movements be coordinated and elegant at least?

Anyways, they hear a clunk, from pink lipped lady climbing into the hole, and they fear for the worst. Cue a long 20-second wait (one with a flower on her head faints!) until the pink lipped lady shows up. Her name is Layla, and she's somehow escaped from a cell. Sleepy mini fairy is revealed to be named Piff (Piff???), and she's Layla's "bonded pixie". Piff's being chided for sleeping. It's no way to greet her best friend after all. And I agree with that. There's a pixie with a data glove, translating Piff-talk. Piff is glad to see her. She's pretty weak... but not too weak to free the pixies. At the suggestion of the purple haired pixie (the one who's not wearing goggles), Layla conjures up a magical pink ball and throws it at a huge wall of skulls. The cell deactivates and the pixies hit the ground. Piff crawls over to Layla as she explains that the Phoenix drained some of her powers.

Anyways, since Layla's too weak to fly and all, and the pixies' wings are covered in tar, Layla decides to carry the pixies around while she's making a hustle. ("This is no way for a pixie to travel" "How undignified!") Layla explains that she won't be able to climb, and she can't fly, so she has to look for the stairs. Yeah, that's it. As Layla begins to hustle, Piff decides to sneak back into her sweater. Some evil guy is crystal ball-ing over Layla (well, he doesn't have a crystal ball), and seeing that she's stubborn, decides to conjure up three monsters to go after her.

Some room. Layla breaks in. Pigtails is getting a bit too weak to talk... and then she starts talking anyway, and ends up getting cut off by Layla. Since data glove pixie's suffering a power failure, her glove's no good for now. Purple hair thinks that there's an exit in the direction she's pointing, but her powers are weak. Cue monsters. One of them is spitting tons of goo. Layla manages to evade one who's jumping at her, and that monster gets stuck in the goo. Flower pixie is cheering for Layla.

And Layla jumps around the monsters, until the other two end up taking each other out with spikes and goo. Layla runs around some more, and ends up face to face with really evil guy. Evil guy wants the pixies, and zaps her to get his hands on most of them. Layla defends herself from evil guy's big claws with a pink firewall shield and evil guy's like "Hey, you should be too weak!" Layla says "It's not easy to defeat a fairy," and evil guy says "Oh, is it?" before throwing her off a cliff. AAAAAAAA!

Back at more familiar grounds, Bloom and Kiko have arrived at Alfea and she finds all of her friends from last season quickly. Tecna is playing with her laptop, as usual. Musa is playing a saxophone. Flora is tending to her flowers, and Bloom asks her where Stella is. Little Miss Sunshine is in her room having problems on what to wear, especially when the latest dress she's bought doesn't fit her, even though it did fit when she bought it at the store (we all have these problems, Stel). Bloom's like "How am I supposed to know? You're the fashion expert" and Stella whines, "It's been a month since I've gone to a party and I've forgotten what Brandon's already seen me in!" Bloom leaves Stel to her own devices as Kiko just shakes his head.

Since no one needs Bloom's help, she's getting into a box of peanuts. She spots a flying seahorse thing, so she goes and grabs it. Apparently, Seahorse is offended at Bloom grabbing him and wraps Bloom in a carpet. Bloom chases Seahorse down the hall, and ends up at some place she's never been to before near the southwest tower. Seahorse is nowhere to be seen (for that matter, so are the peanuts), and Bloom thinks "He must have gone through a wall." Speaking of walls, they're lined with pictures. One of them suggests that there's a door at a certain spot. She finds the door and opens it to reveal a yooooge library. Seahorse is hiding in a shelf. A pixie with glasses flies down, and is not too pleased at Bloom's intrusion. Alfea's regular library has nothing on this one here. Bloom says she's never heard of this place before, and the pixie says that no one's supposed to anyway. She's rather offended that Bloom tormented Seahorse (his name is Hippocampus, but it's soooo Latin) and that now she's in the room. Bloom's trying to wrap her head around all this, as the pixie conjures up some seats on a mat. Nice. Anyways, she introduces herself as Pixie Concorda, and introduces the pixie animals as well. She continues by saying that her job is to maintain the archives for Faragonda and to keep nosy students out. Bloom introduces herself, and then asks about pixies. Concorda then goes into a loooong description about them. Pixies help fairies perform spells, and some grow inseperable so they're like twin sisters. It's called bonding, and "It's a lot like falling in love," according to Concorda. Eww. It's apparently a special thing for these pixies. Anyways, Bloom asks if she's bonded to Faragonda, and turns out Concorda is bonded to the archives. "Don't you get lonely bonded to a room?" Well, Concorda has her pixie pets, which include Seahorse. Anyways, Bloom realizes she needs to go to a party and leaves.

Courtyard. Everyone's in new outfits. Bloom comes out with a new outfit herself. "I must have shattered the land speed record for changing clothes." Kiko soars down with a hairband which she puts on. Stella is trying to organize Bloom's skirt (she is the fairy of beauty for a reason, you know?). Meanwhile, Musa hears something, and the girls head out to wait for the boys from Red Fountain on their hoverbikes. Good hearing, Musa!

Outside, RF boys are on hoverbikes. Everyone's trying to one up each other throughout the ride and Stella singles out Riven for playing dirty. Riven's like "Didn't you want a splashy entrance?" to Sky as they arrive at Alfea. As Sky tells Bloom "A smooth landing would have been a bit too predictable," Timmy comes down in a new RF plane yo meet Tecna. Whee!

Anyways, the party is starting. The teachers are opening the school year, and Faragonda, after talking about last year's battles, asks Bloom to come up. Stella takes off Bloom's headband to make her look good. Bloom asks the others to come up as well, and Stella gives the headband to some random girl who seems not too pleased herself. The building totaled during the battle last season has been rebuilt, and Bloom's hoping that the whole year's going to be like this in general. Fat chance, lady!

Fireworks!

Back in Upside Down Castle Land, Evil Guy is harassing data glove pixie to tell him where the Pixie Village is, and she's like "You're not authorized to access our data" and he's like "Oh, really?!" Pigtails is like "Hey, you leave them alone, bully!" Evil Guy drains data glove and purple hair pixies anyway. It appears that they're named Lockette and Digit (the one pigtails was referring to earlier with the plan). Weird names, those, yes? We get a good look at the four other terrified pixies.

Evil Guy harasses pigtails and claims that the Pixie Village is where they keep their Codex, and then drains pigtails, who then falls on the table next to Lockette and Digit. "Speak or suffer!"

Sunset. Everyone's chit chatting. Bloom's talking about her adventuring during the summer, and Sky's like "There was trouble and you didn't call your neighborhood prince charming?" And Bloom's like "Not every adventure involves monsters." As Stella's talking about bad clothes that she's seen other people wear, Bloom expects that this will be the year she learns the truth about her birth parents. Timmy and Tecna come in, and Nerdboy tells that Tecna was showing him how to calibrate the simulator. "Yeah right, do I even have to say anything at this point?" Musa says, "And yet you always do. It wouldn't be Stella if she didn't have the last word." Quote gold, right there.

Anyways, the boys leave. Flo notices a disturbance in the trees. We see someone's walking through the forest, and her vision's getting all wobbly and stuff, and she turns out to be the pink lipped lady. She's pretty tough, isn't she? Pink lips drops, and Piff falls out of her sweater. As Bloom looks at the pixie, Tecna takes out her medical sensor ladybug (think the original Star Trek's salt shaker, only as a ladybug), and declares pink lips okay, while Bloom wonders where she's from and other stuff.

And we'll get to that in the next show.

I guess with Darkar, less dialogue = better.

Would Stella buy something without trying it on to make sure it looked good? I doubt it. Seems out of character for her. I like 4Kids' version of her summer activities better.

I like the name Hippocampus. It's clever.

Interesting. I always wondered if Concorda and FG were bonded.

While I like the improvement on Darkar and the naming and bonding explanation of Concorda, I still prefer the 4Kids version overall. I like how it's broken up better and other elements, like not yammering on about pixies when they're not all that big a deal yet. That was better briefly summed up by Layla in the UnderRealm.
