TAR14: Eps 11 and 12
Jun. 22nd, 2009 09:57 amGuess I've been sitting on this for too long... We're in the home stretch for TAR14, as we flush out one last team (almost literally) before heading to Hawaii for the finish.
Ep 11:
1. We start off in Beijing with everyone getting fresh clues from Phil to go to some sort of night market. Jamie/Cara aren't too pleased about this situation since they've yet to win a single leg, and Kisha/Jen are somewhat indifferent about it. Anyways, everyone heads to the night market to go look for Travelocity gnomes hidden in various shops. For example, there's one on top of a pile of peanuts, another wearing a bee-keeper's hat in a honey shop, and another with a baker's hat at a bakery.
2. Apparently it's taken them all night to find the gnomes, because we see the sky starting to get light. Let me add that they landed in Beijing at just past 8pm the previous night for the massage and swimming, so everyone's pulling an all-nighter on this double leg. Anyways, the gnome sends them to some place near the Forbidden City, and they're going to ride electric bikes to some subway station. During the taxi ride, we see the cheerleaders showing their cabbie the clue at the bottom of the gnome, and it looks like they're trying to stab him with the gnome's pointy hat. Heh.
3. After a close shave been K/J and Margie/Luke at the bikes, we see Tammy/Victor watching the army guards' flag ceremony, and then Vic opening the next clue with his mouth (really!) We have a Detour between Chinese Waiter (take orders in Chinese) and Beijing Opera (put on make-up). T/V are going with the waiter task, because, yes, they know Chinese. Everyone else goes with the opera.
4. At the waiter task, we see a demonstation of the tonal subtleties of Mandarin, as we see Victor confuse "squid" with "fish". That turns out to be only mistake they make as they get it done the 2nd time around. At the opera task, we see Margie complain about Luke making her look like Alice Cooper.
5. We have a non-blind U-Turn this leg, and it's in a room off the opera building. T/V get directions to it (keep that in mind), and decide to U-Turn K/J (adding "I can't outrun you" to the photo) before heading to another street market. Meanwhile, J/C land at the National Opera, and have a hard time getting another cab to get to the right place. We see M/L and K/J having a hard time finding the U-Turn once they're done with the make-up. And I mean a VERY hard time, as it takes them quite a while to decide to start over at the opera.
6. Street market, and we have a gross food challenge Roadblock. On the menu: larvae, grasshoppers, scorpions, and starfish. We see Vic trying to eat the larvae, before the street vendor tells him he has to fry it first. Heh. Meanwhile, after K/J have finally found the U-Turn, we see their hilarious attempt to take orders in Chinese, and they admit "We're black, not Chinese." Yeah, really. However, either they learn fast, or the judging on this task is apparently not as strict as the previous night's synchronized swimming, since they get it right after about, say, 5 times.
7. J/C have the same trouble finding the U-Turn after they've finally arrived and gotten their make-up done, and and by the time they do find the U-Turn (after at least 3 hours, apparently), they (rightfully) assume that K/J have finished both Detours already. Pit stop is at the Bird's Nest Stadium, and we see T/V claiming a leg win in China (T/V had just been to China for the Olympics, to boot) and Margie downing scorpions before claiming 2nd.
8. The real action is between J/C and K/J fighting for the last spot in the finals, with Cara and Jen's eating contest. Jen has some water with pretty much every small bite (this will be important), while we see Cara wolfing down the goods like crazy (apparently, she finished the whole thing in 8 minutes). K/J still get a cab before J/C, but J/C's cabbie is flooring it to the Bird's Nest, while Jen is complaining about having to go pee.
9. We see K/J get off at the Water Cube and stopping by a bunch of port-a-potties, while J/C get off right at the stadium. And after that brief potty break, the last spot goes to... the cheerleaders. Guess what Jen blames it on? Anyways, J/C have become only the 4th F/F team to make it to the final three (and also the 4th team to make it there without winning a single leg).
Ep 12:
1. Next stop, Maui. Once again, it's the same flight for everyone, and the first task in Hawaii is to carry a pig along the beach to a luau. M/L have the proper shoulder technique, but the other two teams carry it with both hands and struggle like crazy, and end up putting down their pigs on the sand a couple times (with Vic going all drill sergeant on Tammy). That can't make the pig too appetizing ;-)
2. M/L's shouldering tactic has put them into the lead for the next task, jetski-ing to a field of buoys and searching for a clue envelope. This one's particularly uneventful, so we head over to the final Roadblock, where the task is to build a surfboard fence, with surfboards showing pictures relating to the previous tasks. Margie says that Luke has prepared himself for this kind of task, and we see him make a nice lead for himself as he runs to the pile of boards, finds one with a relevant picture, and places it on his fence, over and over. Oh, and we also see him dropping his shorts (seriously!)
3. Would you believe that even in America, J/C still manage to have cab trouble? Their cabbie has no idea where they're supposed to be heading, and the dispatcher lady tells them over the phone, "I'm not your personal concierge." Ouch. While J/C call the 911 to tell them where it is, T/V get to the Roadblock with Luke already having placed 8 of 11 surfboards in their place. Seems Vic has also prepared well for this task, though, and he's got a different tactic: He looks for the right boards in the pile, and piles them next to his fence. (And he also drops his shorts.) Meanwhile, we watch J/C stop for gas. Remind you of anything?
4. Margie admits that they don't remember much of the China double leg, even though it's the most recent one. HUH. Indeed, we see Luke putting up his boards for the leg (one for each half, BTW), a surfer chick judge saying he's wrong, and Luke taking away the wrong board and throwing it back in the pile (literally, at one point). Rinse, lather, repeat. Meanwhile, Vic has been chipping away at Luke's lead, and J/C have arrived well behind the others. Jamie comments on the randomness of the patterns on the boards, which, yeah, that's kinda the point.
5. Vic finishes his fence, and T/V are headed to the finish line at King Kamehameha golf course, while Jamie and Luke end up having to help each other finish the task. They find a board with a picture of Jesus on it, and although Jamie doesn't remember seeing him in the first leg, it turns out that's the only remaining board she needed (they stopped by a church briefly in leg 1). In return, she flips over her boards for Luke, and Luke turns out to be missing the scorpions.
6. Golf course, and T/V become the 2nd sibling team in as many seasons to claim the win (and probably the first to do it without pants: "You can afford to buy some new ones" says Phil), with J/C in 2nd, and M/L in 3rd. We spend a good amount of time on the deaf kid's participation (and finish) in the race, as Phil points out to Luke, "Your mom really is the Bionic Woman." And with that, we're done.
