The Amazing Race 20: Eps 7 to 9
May. 2nd, 2012 10:16 pmEp 7
1. This week, we head to Tanzania (which should please Mark/Bopper, as it's in Africa :-))... but before we get there, we get a whole lot of racer drama (boring!) While everyone's getting their tix from a travel agent, Art/JJ claim they suspect the "teachers" (Nary/Jamie) are in fact law enforcers (and they'd be right, too), as N/J asked them about UC (undercover) operations during their short break in the Baku leg (and Art/JJ also note that teachers should be more friendly). They decide to use this knowledge to stir the pot a little, and even confront N/J later at Nairobi Airport. Though N/J still insist they're teachers, Art/JJ note their "deer in the headlights" look... In confessionals, we also find out that Jamie once accidentally shot herself in the leg once [ouch!] and Nary never left her side [awwww...], while Art/JJ really don't like team Big Brother being on the race (me neither :-\)
2. Also in Nairobi Airport, airport drama that doesn't involve the frantic buying of tickets, as Vanessa/Ralph accuse Big Brother of bumping them while transferring to a flight to Kilimanjaro, and in the ensuing argument, we find out that Vanessa is 38. Moving on, everyone cab-races from Kilimanjaro airport to a nearby airstrip to sign up for flights departing at 15 minute intervals to Ngorongoro Crater, meaning that by the time we get to any actual meaningful racing, the episode is like 15-20 minutes in :-\
3. Teams guide a driver to the rim of the crater to get a clue pickup for a Detour between Courtship and Marksmanship. Both involve biking to a nearby village, and Vanessa falls over and over until she eventually just walks with the bike :-\ As for the actual tasks, Marksmanship involves throwing sticks at clay bunnies mounted on a bike wheel. Courtship involves jumping for a minute. In spite of the 8,000' altitude, it really is as simple as it sounds and looks. Only Big Brother and Mark/Bopper (whom Big Brother tell about the task) do it though...
4. The only other task this leg involves going to a campground and setting up a bush camp, including bush shower (a bag with a shower head on the bottom), before racing to the pitstop. Art/JJ drop a few spots by heading in the wrong direction, while at the actual task, N/J have a distinct disadvantage being the only male-less team left, and Rachel/Dave bicker while setting up the frame of their tent. Despite their bickering though, R/D finish setting up first, and also get to the pitstop first, winning a trip to Costa Rica, while N/J are glad not to be eliminated after finishing last.
Ep 8
1. We stay in Tanzania this week, as teams get a safari through the Ngorongoro crater while heading to their next clue pickup in a nearby town, at a stall named "Hillary Clin(g)ton" (near another stalled named "Barack Obama" :-) ), even seeing elephants on the way :-) Yes, we do get jokes about Hillary (from Art/JJ). Clue is a Detour between Water Supply (get water jugs from a given house, wait in really long line to fill at a communal well) and Air Supply (fix a flat bike tire without removing the wheel from the bike). Turns out M/B have fixed their share of bikes in the past (Bopper, who apparently re-injured his knee last leg, even tells their "customer" not to ride on glass :-D)
2. Next stop is a nearby pub, where we have a Double U-Turn this week. Art/JJ and R/D promised each other in leg 5 that they'll U-Turn Big Brother given the opportunity. R/D choose not to, on the basis that N/J are too far behind, so when Art/JJ arrive to U-Turn Big Brother, they assume that R/D must be behind them. (BB Rachel: "Shocker"</sarcasm>) Big Brother, in turn, U-Turn Vanessa/Ralph.
3. Next stop, an art gallery. Vanessa/Ralph comment about their good luck in getting cabs... and then they get a flat tire :-D They comment about their cabbie's quick tire change that he should be in a pit crew :-) It's a clue pick up for everyone else, while N/J's Speed Bump is putting a bunch of art on a set of display shelves.
4. Next stop is a farm, where a Roadblock asks: "To bee or not to bee?" :-D It involves putting on beekeeper outfits, and spraying smoke at bees to collect honey (two teams mention Winnie the Pooh :-D) Amusingly, Big Brother Rachel says she used the smoke like perfume, even smoking herself in the process :-D The big story, though, is Art/JJ coming across R/D at the Roadblock and realizing they didn't honor their deal, so Art/JJ basically decide that they'll have nothing to do with R/D from now on. Ooh!
5. Pitstop is at some dry lake bed, and in spite of Bopper's bum knee, M/B edge out R/D to claim first, and a trip to Hawaii. Meanwhile, the Speed Bump, and lack of bunching in this leg, end up getting the "teachers" eliminated.
Ep 9:
1. Time for the obligatory India leg, but first, Bopper gets his knee checked and put in a brace. This season, we're heading to Cochin. Long story short, Art/JJ do their business at the travel agent without talking to R/D, and Vanessa/Ralph get a different flight that lands before the others', which ends up not making that much of a difference, as they head to a local school by bus. Mark throws up on the bus on the way (that can't be a good sign...)
2. Roadblock is a bit direct this week: "Who's got all the right moves?" It's a Bollywood dancing Roadblock. Good for the teams with girls on them (the non-BB Rachel gets it done in one go!), not so much for the all-male teams... especially Mark. (The heat doesn't exactly help, either...)
3. Next stop is a local coffee shop, to pick up the Detour clue between cricket and rickshaw driving. The latter involves both contestants driving in a zigzag between poles (the music people have Dave driving to Flight of the Valkyries :-D), while the former, as Art/JJ point out, is a lot like baseball (the music people even put in an Indian-ized version of generic baseball music! :-D) Meanwhile, we get split-screens of Mark's attempts piling up.
4. Pit stop is some palace on an island, and R/D win their 5th (!) leg and a trip to Saint Lucia. Mark insists on persisting with the Roadblock, and it takes him 12 (!) attempts (and much pep talking) to finally pass, by which point Vanessa/Ralph have already checked-in in 4th, so we're only briefly shown them doing the rickshaw Detour. Thankfully (Bopper's knee notwithstanding), it's a non-elim. (I'll have this week's leg up in the next update...)
