The Amazing Race, season 25: Legs 4 to 7
Nov. 18th, 2014 11:20 pmLeg 4:
1. Next stop is Copenhagen, and there's a lot of scrambling to get flights. Dentists Misty/Jim look online and find a 4pm arrival, and they're sure it's the best available. Turns out that Kym/Alli (cyclists) got a 2pm landing looking around at Aberdeen airport, but that's still better than college sweethearts Tim/Te Jay's 5:40pm arrival, and mom/daughter Shelley/Nici's 6:20pm, both resulting from delays :-\ At the airport, wrestlers Brooke/Robbie park in a "handyman parking space", marked with a wheelchair guy :-\ + :-D Also, it should be noted that Bethany(/Adam) is ripping open the first clue of the leg with her one arm in each leg.
2. And the first step after landing in Copenhagen is to self-drive over a bridge to Malmo, Sweden, which bewilders the wrestlers who ask "Is Sweden a different country?" :-D It's also a product placement task with a new model of Ford hybrid, in which teams who drive using less than 0.1 gallon of gas get their next clue immediately, while those who use more have to answer a simple geography question. The cyclists blab about how they're environmentally conscious, and end up being the best at the task, only using a mere 0.01 gallon :-) (Only two other teams manage the feat :-\)
3. As for the geography question: Name the capitals of the Scandinavian countries. (Even more specifically, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark) Most of the teams have to get some locals to help them :-\ Tim/Te Jay have the answer off the top of their heads :-)
4. Back across the bridge to a Detour between putting together and delivering a really tall cake, and putting together one of two living room decors in a "parklet" in 30 minutes. With the cake, contestants have to assemble and decorate the cake first, before delivering it in a bike. Kym/Alli choose this one (of course ;-)) have the foresight to carry a tube of icing to reassemble the cake when it falls apart on the way... but that foresight almost doesn't matter when they have to scramble around to find the receipt they're supposed to present to the (really tan :-)) maitre d' at destination :-\ Most who do this task end up switching to the parklets because they simply don't get very far without their cake falling apart :-\ The wrestlers manage the task, and Robbie half-jokingly asks "Can I eat that?"... both at the start point and end point :-D
5. With the parklets, the dentists pride themselves in their attention to detail, but find themselves stymied by what turns out to be a ludicrously pedantic one: The flower pot shows a 7-petal flower facing out, and they're supposed to face the side with the 8-petal flower out... Pretty crazy :-\ They're not the only team to get stymied by this, but they do end up being the only team to switch to cake delivery :-O (We get a flashback to 36 hours earlier at the previous pitstop, where they brag that they'll be the most dominant team in TAR history... yeah, that was a bit of a tall order even before this leg :-\)
6. The dentists find the cake task the easier one (!) but feel like shooting themselves in the face for losing a flag on the cake :-\ Next stop is the Ida Davidsen sandwich restaurant, with the first Roadblock since leg 1, asking "Who's got a good memory for faces?" The faces in question being sandwich faces: Customers give the waiters the numbers of their sandwiches, waiters memorize the ingredients of each specific number, and waiters tell Ida the number and the ingredients. Upon completing the task, Robbie asks, "Can I eat that?" again :-D Nici manages to pull it off in one go to overtake Misti, who takes 9 attempts to realize that she's supposed to give Ida the number along with the ingredients :-\
7. Pit stop, where Phil is waiting with a Great Dane (who hilariously glomps him at one point :-D) Kym/Alli win the leg and get those hybrid cars they drove this leg :-) Shelley/Nici manage to get themselves up to 6th, sniping all the way to the pitstop, to the point where Phil has to intervene :-\ The dentists are in last, and hold out The Amazing Save for Phil to take... and then give back after revealing that this is non-elimination (cue many viewers saying "WHAT.") and we close out on Misti saying that they got kicked in the teeth today (insert David Caruso sunglasses here :-D)
Leg 5
1. Next stop is Marrakesh in Morocco. After a short clip of the cyclists trying out their new rides, we get a scene in which the wrestlers not only confuse Morocco with maracas... but also confuse maracas with the tambourine (!) Long story short, same flight for everyone, before heading to a local square to set up food carts. Interestingly enough, Nici learned Spanish while serving in the air force (they've both served in the forces), and it proves useful on a Moroccan cabbie (go figure, huh?)
2. Beth(any/Adam, surfers), thinks the food carts in New York are luxurious compared to this, as we hilariously cut from Tim/Te Jay complaining about the smell from their cart to another team complimenting about its nice smell :-D Misti/Jim get a carpet-hanging Speed Bump, before we get our "live" Phil commentary as he points out that Misti/Jim are at least 12 minutes behind as they finish their carts.
3. Tanning Roadblock: remove the hair from some goat pelts, and then deliver some prepared pelts by bike to a local shop. Beth does her first, and very admirably at that. Everyone comments on the smell, and Maya talks about how they're experiencing Moroccan culture... which Jim promptly mocks in a confessional :-D Misti accidentally (?) bumps Nici's bike over after catching up during the hair removal. The delivery portion proves a great equalizer, as all the teams get lost and end up getting to the shop at more or less the same time, and then return at the same time, resulting in a scuffle between Nashville and Shelley/Nici while queueing up to get their next clue :-\ (This will be important.)
4. Moving on to the Detour now, between serving mint tea in a specific way and twirling a hat tassel around one's head for a minute (!) One of the specifics about the tea service is that one has to balance the tray on one hand. Obviously, Beth/Adam take this one ;-)
5. Next is a U-Turn, and between Nashville and the dentists, Shelley/Nici decide to use the U-Turn on Nashville, apparently based solely on the fact that they can see them still trying to twirl their tassels in the square :-\ It's actually a double U-Turn, but only the one gets used...
6. Pit stop is at a carpet shop, and the cyclists edge out Beth/Adam to win $5,000 each, while Nashville end up switching over to tea, and then end up having to spin tassels anyway as a result of the U-Turn... We're told that the elapsed time is a little more than 2 hours (it's not clear whether it's for doing both detours or just the 2nd go at tassel spinning), before they're summarily eliminated at the pit stop.
Leg 6
1. Domestic leg this time, as everyone heads to some local horse stables to carry some hay, get some apples, and ride a horse carriage. Asking around reveals the stables to be 10 km away, and so requires taking a cab. The last three stragglers (T/T, Shelley/Nici, Amy/Maya) only find out when Beth/Adam return from their romantic carriage ride (!) We have a scene in which Brooke body slams her bag of hay :-D :-D They're also supposed to feed their horses with the apples at the end of the ride... Robbie is shown eating one of the apples, but there does not appear to be a penalty :-\ The cyclists decide to name their carriage's horses after themselves, and comment that they should see a dentist... leading into a cut to Misti/Jim :-D
2. Next up is a self-drive in a Ford Fiesta (of course!) to a pottery shop in the sticks about 15 km away, for a clue pick-up for a Detour between setting up a tent and milking goats to make butter. Shelley/Nici drive on and on and on.... :-\
3. Dentists do the tents, and this time around, their attention to detail is on point, to get their clue first. Cyclists do the goat milking, and pour their milk into a bladder for churning (even covering the opening of the bladder with a shirt for hygiene :-D)... and then find out it'll take 45 minutes, so they switch over to tents... and then see how hard that is and switch back :-\
4. During the churning, the man doing the demonstration starts singing, and gets Adam and Kym singing along (with Kym even making up her own lyrics! :-D) while Robbie comments about getting a workout doing the churning :-) Meanwhile, after driving for who knows how long, Shelley/Nici eventually get directions, and Amy/Maya and Brooke/Robbie are happy to pass them while driving away after finishing their Detour...
5. Roadblock: "Who's good at sliding things together?" It entails walking across rickety bridges (with rope support), putting together a puzzle, and then ziplining back. Beth continues to be awesome by using her feet to put the puzzle together :-) while Amy/Daniel (S21) are probably watching this and sighing :-\ Te Jay says he's good at puzzles, but not at heights, so he keeps saying "I'm on the Amazing Race" as he makes his way across... and then turns out not be so good at puzzles either :-D
6. Pit stop at Casbah D'If, with a greeter playing a banjo, wearing a chicken and a dove on his head, and for the last few teams, he even gets the dove to do tricks for them :-) (though the dove does peck Tim's hand :-D) Dentists get 1st and a trip to Brazil... and cue Twinkle Smile :-) And it's only a matter of time before Shelley/Nici are eliminated, though Phil does comment they're much better now than they were just two legs ago :-) (They do think they should have kept fighting just for this :-\)
Leg 7:
1. Next stop is Sicily, Italy, and naturally, a few of the contestants joke about getting pizza :-) Kym/Alli don't like the dentists, and decide to write "Team No-Fun" (replete with illustration) in the dirt on their car at the airport :-D Everyone ends up getting split into two flights, and the first flight's teams arrive to see a beautiful sunset... from the airport :-) First stop is a clue pickup (accompanied with dancing, plus a feast!) for staggering the teams into 3 groups 10 minutes apart the next morning, but that doesn't achieve much separation when many contestants take a lot of time to find a cab to the next task (Brooke/Robbie take 40 minutes [!])
2. First task is a Roadblock: "Who's ready to put their foot to the Florio?" It calls for traversing a course used for a classic Italian car race in go-kart in under 4:07, which everyone gets on the first go except Maya (not too coincidentally, her first go is the only solo racing), and everyone gets their next clue from a local legend, before riding in a classic car to the next stop (sweet :-)) While Kym's riding to the next destination, she makes a quip about retiring here with a nice Italian husband and eating pasta... I don't blame her :-D
3. Next stop, a Detour between Painters and Posers. Former involves painting on a fresco (and it's limited to 4 teams), latter involves memorizing opera singers' outfits, and matching them in a backroom. Amusingly, it appears that the wrestlers thought they were supposed to memorize the lyrics or something :-D Tim/Te Jay beat the scientists in a race to the last spot for the fresco painting, but it turns to be pretty hard, with the art expert judges dinging them for having their lines too thick (and rightfully so), putting them up against Beth/Adam to avoid last place.
4. Pitstop at a local Villa, and Phil not only gives the 1st place dentists a trip to Ocho Rios in Jamaica, he also announces that it's the 300th TAR leg (!) Beth/Adam hang on to their Express Pass, and edge out Tim/Te Jay to avoid last place, and it's also an NEL, so double lucky for Beth/Adam :-)
1. Next stop is Copenhagen, and there's a lot of scrambling to get flights. Dentists Misty/Jim look online and find a 4pm arrival, and they're sure it's the best available.
