The Editor's Spotlight: Exchange Students
Sep. 25th, 2006 03:31 pmSo, the Winx head to CT for some classes... and to ask the witches to help them in their cause.
Unedited: Bloom: "The witches helped us fight the Trix last year." Musa: "Don't forget that they also helped the Trix fight us!" (flashback to 1x09)
Edited: Bloom: "Witches do have some good qualities." Musa: "Is ganging up on a person and humilating them a good quality?" (flashback to 1x09)
I'm predicting that Lori will complain about the lack of witch screen-time during that battle, like she did in Party Monster... and will then cite this as a reason that the edited was better.
We meet two teachers.
Unedited: The two teachers introduce themselves as Edilthrude and Zarathustra.
Edited: What do you call a fairy without her wings? Dragon food.
Classroom.
Unedited: Flora asks why they don't pair off in class. As everyone else laughs at the idea, Grif replies, "Team members can betray one another. So a witch trusts no one but herself." (Mirta finds her old room, but there's no reply from Lucy.) Later, Musa and Bloom are doing good at the exercise. No reasons are given for Musa, but Bloom mentions she had a bad week.
Edited: Flora says she would take a kitten in as a pet. Everyone laughs at the idea, and Grif replies that the misery would allow her to cast skin-rot spells. (Mirta finds her old room, but Lucy wants her to stay away.) Later, Musa and Bloom are doing good at the exercise. Musa says she's using witches as her own despicable image, while Bloom mentions she had a bad week.
Given that they made a point of showing Bloom doing good at this exercise, AND (in the US) Grif mentioning "Bad things happen to those who can't control their dark energy", you'd think that Shadows in Bloom would directly play on that. (Imagines... Avalon: "She wants to know about her parents, AND she's got lots of dark energy to spare... Perfect.") Instead, we have her turning dark because of a "Shadow Virus", with no mention whatsoever of her dark energy. Last second re-write?
Fast forward to later in the library.
Unedited: Lucy: "Rumor has it that Bloom gave the witches exactly what they wanted!" Stella: "How could you say that about her???" Tecna: "Um, technically she did." Stella: "Whose side are you on?!"
Edited: The conversation is more straight to the point in the original, with Lucy mentioning that Bloom gave the witches the Dragonfire. Stella: "She does have a point." Tecna: "The Dragonfire was TAKEN!" (Stella repeats this point for Lucy)
I have a hunch that the catfight spell was not part of the original, but I can't really confirm it. I know the teacher points at Mirta saying "Everyone gets an A except Mirta", after Mirta mentions she'd been through this class with the other teacher.
The only reason that I put this here is because that tricking the Winx into performing a catfight spell on themselves is REALLY dumb when you're trying to save the universe.
Tecna looks for the Codex. She finds the heart on her map.
Unedited: Tecna indicates the heart, but does not make the assumption that the Codex is there. (Which makes it weird that she says, "I miscalculated???" at the very start of the next episode.) The Trix come in. Tecna is invoking her transformation, but Icy's Ice Coffin precludes that from happening. (Considering how Lori commented about the goblin witch thing attacking the Winx while Bloom decides to have the whole group use their Charmixes, I bet she'd like the original.)
Edited: Tecna says, "All the energy flows to and from one place. The Codex must be there!" (This is with no rhyme or reason, and even SHE will admit it in the next ep.) The Trix come in. Tecna is about to attack, but Icy's Ice Coffin precludes the attack from happening. (Meanwhile, at the start of the next episode, they cut out Griffin saying "I see you've found my personal sauna", and Tecna's "miscalculated" reaction.)
Lounge! Musa gets into a fight with the witches.
Unedited: Musa simply doesn't trust the witches (see the start of the ep). In the fight, we actually get to see a couple witches shooting at the Trix (do you get this in your version?).
Edited: The witches insist that they don't know what she's talking about, but Musa insists she doesn't forget a face. Obviously, she is accusing them of 1x09. In either version, she then accuses them of letting the Trix get away when the Trix come and go.
If 4K's trying to make Musa look racist, they're doing a good job, since none of the witches in that scene were involved in the 1x09 incident. But why make Musa look racist? She's had enough image problems as it is (hello, hip-hop talk!).
One thing that isn't different: after Bloom invokes her transformation at the Heart, we do not get the transformation sequence. (Two cents, anyone?)
Bonus: Having just watched Wrong Righters last night...
Unedited: Bloom wants to get switched with Diaspro because a) it's the only option for this spell, as they need two people of the same height and weight, and b) even though she doesn't even like her, Sky did say to his parents that he wants to save her no matter what.
Edited: Bloom wants to get switched with Diaspro because she can use her magic powers to break free.
The unedited sounds noble, the edited sounds practical... two cents, anyone?
Unedited: No reason given for the spying spell, IIRC.
Edited: Stormy's looking for the Codex piece.
I'm not sure if this is right or not, but if it is the case, then 1 point to 4K.
And although this isn't about editing-schmediting, I'm (desparately) seeking topics for the next WinxTalk Podcast. My current agenda is a recap of this week's BRAND SPANKING NEW episode with some reviews.
