As already mentioned last time...
Unedited: Griffin comes out and declares, "It seems you have found my personal sauna!" Tecna is shocked to have miscalculated... it makes no sense since she didn't say the Codex was in the heart, and yet this (and her later "Fairies and logic don't mix!" comment) would make it seem that she did. ANOTHER last second re-write?
Edited: We just get straight to the "Hey, where's the Codex?!" bit.
The first thing that Tecna does after taking Bloom back to their CT dorm:
Unedited: Blame herself for everything. (She does have a point. The witches only went to the Heart because Tecna's map pointed them there, and same for Bloom.)
Edited: Tell everyone "What matters is that we have to work together." In both versions, the scene then proceeds with everyone pointing fingers at each other.
One of the biggest plot problems is that except for Flora/Layla, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the fairies' pairings.
Unedited: A teacher points this out, and Grif explains, "It will either strengthen their bond or destroy it. Either way, they'll learn something."
Edited: In the scene that they explain this originally, Grif explains that they're using the Winx as live bait to buy them time.
Neither version makes sense. The lack of explanation in the edited is one thing (as we've learned from "Magical Reality Check", any explanation is better than none), but the explanation in the unedited is cheap. They're trying to save the universe, and all Grif is interested in is having them learn something? Why not go for the sure thing, and pair Bloom off with Stella, Tecna with Flora, and Musa with Layla (esp. since this last pairing has been emphasized lately)? The answer, for the writers, is obviously, "So that the witches can end up taking the piece, so that they'll eventually have all four and get this plot into turbo mode."
So, the Trix benefited from all that the CT teachers did, what with the catfight spell, then splitting off each fairy with her least compatible pair, and the Winx suffered. Suddenly, Musa's little conspiracy theory may be holding water... but I digress.
Bloom and Tecna enter a room.
Unedited: Bloom: "We need a plan" Tecna: "Well don't look at me! Apparently fairies and logic don't mix!" Bloom: "No one blames you..." Tecna: "Do they blame you?! Huh?!"
Edited: Bloom: "Guessing the Codex was in the heart was a good guess" (Good point, Bloom. Many of us thought the heart was the obvious place to put it.) Tecna: "I made a ridiculously illogical leap in reason. I assumed!" <digress>(Then Tecna would just LOVE a good mystery. It's the only genre of fiction in which any kind of assumption [no matter how logical it would be in real life] would be illogical. Occam's Razor? What's that? ;) )</digress> Bloom: "Everyone makes mistakes, Tecna." Tecna: "Not me! I don't!"
Count me in on those who thought that Bloom's next line should have been something like "But you did attack Avalon, right?" instead of "Didn't you tell me something about digitally enhancing these rubies?" Regardless, the unedited sidesteps the lack of reference to 2x09 (although it does create a new problem... how can Tecna say that, when she's lived all her life with logic just fine? It would be like Layla thinking she's not good at friendships after having a fallout with Stella, because she's always been good with Musa).
While Bloom isn't going well with Tecna, the girl she SHOULD be paired with isn't doing too well with Musa either.
Unedited: In the cafeteria, Stella decides that there's no way the witches would come here, so she decides to just sit here. Musa does not like that "battle plan". The gist: "You're just going to sit there? What if they do come?"
Edited: In the cafeteria, Stella says to the gist of, "My music taste is better than yours, and I'm sitting here until you admit it!" Musa gists, "We're trying to save the universe, and we're arguing over music?" (They continue to argue even after they get walled up!)
And I'm with edited Musa on this. Arguing over a battle plan makes more sense. Of course, Kuina getting attacked by someone who she had beaten in a swordfight is more sensible than dying by falling down the stairs (except for, well, Kuina NOT DYING from the attack), and we all know what everyone thinks of it. (Okay, not all of us, just those who watch the 4K version of One Piece, or read about its edits.)
(That said, I'm betting some fans will actually like Musa and Stella arguing over frivulous things, just because it shows how much the catfight spell has affected them.)
The rest of the episode pretty much goes the same in both versions (but tell me, is there a scene where Flora and Layla consider whether to save Bloom/Tecna or the Codex? That costs them valuable time, and Layla regrets this when she sees the damage from B/T-Trix fight). And as a comment, does anyone appreciate the irony that each of Tecna's, Musa's and Bloom's ideas (Tecna: put a shield around the Codex, Musa: blast the Trix into oblivion, Bloom: capture the Trix) alone all would have resulted in the Codex being defended, and yet the sum of their ideas resulted in the Codex being taken?
BTW, three things that aren't different:
* Musa doesn't show her anti-witch side in this one. (On one hand, no more randomly accusing witches of 1x09! OTOH... well, it could have been made interesting.)
* Tecna makes her bad witch pun. "Speaking of which, heh, we have activity. ... Okay, I know it wasn't funny."
* We don't see Lucy after Darcy attacks her (and Mirta).
Speaking of the witches, I note this: CT is the only school in Magix not represented in the season finale battle by its students. (And last year, while all 3 schools were represented, the witches were never shown making their mark on the battle, which considering how this battle was meant to show that the fairies and witches have put their long-standing grudges aside was a bad idea.)
I mean, Alfea sends the Winx, RF sends the Specs. So why isn't CT sending some of its witches at all this year? With that, they could atone their earlier failure here. (Also, with this same logic, Livy should have come along too.)
Bonus, added the next day: While typing up the recaplet for 2x13, it made me remember the "etiquette vs. troll language" discussion from a few Spotlights ago. I will concede that there is less trouble with the "troll language" edit, but here's another thought... why would learning troll language be specific to being a princess? It makes more sense with learning etiquette and stuff (in fact, Diaspro rants something like this in 2x14 too). I know it's illogical (as in, why doesn't the cop ask for Layla's numbers?) but it works for me better than the troll language.

Date: 2006-09-29 03:45 pm (UTC)Speak for yourself! I'm not that stupid.
And STOP TALKING ABOUT ME.
Also, it's never said that Layla doesn't know etiquette as well as the languages. As for learning a lot of languages, ever heard of diplomacy? Knowing a lot of languages is very useful to those in positions of power.

Once again, you've got a good point. (But at least they could have mentioned the etiquette too...)
BTW, since the season premiere's today (Saturday), I'm asking for permission to quote your Toon Zone review of the episode in my next podcast.

Date: 2006-10-01 12:44 am (UTC)BTW, I'm also in the "I don't like Musa's new hair" camp. What irks me more is that she said that she wouldn't change her pigtails in 2x01... I think she should have kept that promise.
Short pigtails = spunky. Long pigtails = just plain weird.
(BTW, also notes that you haven't responded to any of my emails for a while now)

Date: 2006-10-01 02:06 pm (UTC)Lori says, "Wow. Total wow. Of the three seasons, this was easily the best opener. I loved just about every minute." Lori cites, as strong points, the new season taking place during the summer, Tecna's new voice, Stella trying on dresses virtually, and our new villain Baltor and his takeover of Layla's home realm. However, she also cites a few weak points, the biggest ones being Musa's longer hair and the editing of the intro to incorporate this, Flora / Helia, and everyone agreeing with Stella's conclusion that her parents must be getting back together.
I'll probably include a bit on how the intro pulls an Iola Boylan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mama's_Family#The_Syndicated_Years) on us with Musa's new 'do. Can't they acknowledge that Musa used to have short hair?
Of course, I'm open to suggestions on what you'd like me to say...

Date: 2006-10-01 02:12 pm (UTC)-Stella and Bloom trying on dresses virtually (since they both did)
-the introduction of Chimera and her friends, who attend the rival fairy school Beta Academy (definitely the biggest highlight for me)
-And our new villain Baltor, his team-up with the Trix, and his takeover... (Can't forget the witches!)
I'd leave out Flora/Helia as a lowlight. It was only a couple seconds of gagging for me. I just hate them that much that I had to mention it.

Date: 2006-10-03 07:48 am (UTC)1. Is it okay with you for me to use Tecna's soundbyte about what she thinks about good guesses (from this ep, natch)? I'd put it right after your review, thusly:
...and everyone agreeing with Stella's conclusion that her parents must be getting back together. It may be a good guess, but remeber what Tecna thinks of good guesses?
[Insert soundbyte of Tecna calling her guess, "A ridiculously illogical leap in reason"]
I guess on her planet, the term "good guess" is an oxymoron.
(BTW, does it say something about Bloom that she thinks that Tecna made a good guess about the Codex being in the heart, even though you never thought it was?)
2. Somehow, I'd think that you'd have some sort of opinion on most of the edits here. Didn't you have gripes with the "mispairing" of the fairies? And surely it would interest you to know that Stella and Musa aren't arguing over music in the original? (Quite frankly, I don't understand WHY Stella would try to convince Musa that her musical tastes are wrong. Musa is the fairy of freakin' music. Of course she'll have the best musical tastes!) I understand that you don't have lots of free time, but still...

Date: 2006-10-03 03:03 pm (UTC)Frankly, I don't believe there is such a thing as mispairing the fairies. They ALL have to learn to work in harmony to make six-way convergence work. Putting the easy pairs together doesn't give them practice in meshing with their more different friends.
As for Stella, you know she thinks she's always right. Besides, Musa likes hip hop. That alone makes her taste questionable. (Even if she doesn't play it in the original, her dressing style is referencing hip hop.)
no subject
Date: 2006-10-04 12:43 pm (UTC)But why would they need to practice now, when they're trying to save the universe? Of course, I already kind of answered this in the original post: So that the Trix can end up getting the piece, and keep the plot going.

However, the fact that they're arguing doesn't bug me as much as what they're arguing over. They're arguing over music, which has nada to do with the issue at hand, while in the original, Musa is mad that Stella plans on just sitting here. Of course, knowing you, you're probably one of those people who'd actually prefer Musa and Stella arguing over frivulous things.

Date: 2006-10-04 03:13 pm (UTC)The Tec thing sounds fine. I bet "guess" is a four-letter word in her realm.
I dunno if this makes me geeky, but the first thing I thought of was Spock making guesses in Star Trek 4. Luckily, one of my fave websites actually recapped this movie, so let me just quote the relevant parts...
Bones sidles over to Spock and says, "You present the appearance of a man with a problem." Spock agrees, and says he's having problems calculating their journey back in time with the added weight of the whales because Scotty can't give him exact figures. Bones tells him to give it his best shot and guess. Spock shakes his head and says, "Guessing is not in my nature." "Well," Bones muses, "nobody's perfect." Spock considers this.
[...]
"Admiral, there be whales here!" Scotty announces, jouncing himself a bit in his excitement. Kirk orders Sulu to take them to warp, and invites Annie to check on the whales with him. Before going down, he checks with Spock on his calculations. "Mr. Scott cannot give me exact figures, Admiral, I will make a guess." "A guess? You, Spock? That's extraordinary!" Kirk grins and walks off with Annie. Spock tells Bones that he doesn't think Kirk has quite grasped the situation. "No, Spock," Bones explains as if to a child, "he means that he feels safer with your guess than most other people's facts." Spock realizes it's meant to be a compliment, and promises to make the best guess he can.
